The Name Calling Needs To END! Let's Do Something About It.
Edited on Sun Feb-10-08 05:59 PM by IndieLeft
It is getting to the point where I don't even want to come on here. We are not children. We are adults, and yet I see more and more people on here resulting the ignorant name calling.

What point does this serve? Seriously? If you don't have a valid point to make, is that the best you can offer is rude names?

We need to put an end to this... ON BOTH SIDES! I don't use them, and I don't appreciate when they are used towards me.

If you agree with me, then send a message to a moderator. Maybe they will do something about it.

Peace!

11. It's so much easier to use them rather than come up with meaningful criticism

22. I wonder if some of those using the talking points and name calling..
are not either trolls or former republicons and they don't know any better.

Not sure that is the case but I have been wonder that for a while now. With all the smear and hate that has been going around, it is almost as if I don't recognize this place any longer.

I don't remember this sort of crap in '04.

3. I agree--it's so nasty
I don't do it myself. I put people on Ignore when they do. When a person starts name-calling it means that they don't have anything else to say that anybody would want to read.

8. I really hate ignore- but I can see the value of it- Maybe rather than
deluge the Mods we could police ourselves.

You are right, calling names is the sign of nothing left to say-

:hi:
peace~

ps(I LOVE the picture of the Obamas in your post)

It's the primaries. I'll clear it out when they are over.

I love that pic too--makes me all warm and fuzzy every time I see it. :)

and implement just one:

Act like a grownup.

We aren't all going to agree. I harly ever agree with you for that matter, but your posts are always well thought out, and I know you aren't going to say "fuck you freeper" as I got the other day.

5. We don't need to do shit.
The DU-PTB ( :scared: ) are enforcing the site rules.

You have choices:

A) Ignore it.
B) Engage it.
C) Do both.

Note: The DU-PTB?

9. INSIDE VOICE, KIDS!! INSIDE VOICE!!
There are always those who think their need for order trumps free speech.

Does it ever occur to you that you're judgmental and annoying in your quest to make others toe your line?

But enough of us have to take that minute to go the gd:p main page, click the moderators link and send a letter.

12. Not up to the mods, it's up to the actual Admins.
They seem somewhat unconcerned with Dems being ripped needlessly. Makes for great entertainment, but shitty politics.

From what I remember.

Now, it's like there are no rules and this is what we get.

15. My biggest problem is that rules that apply in one forum don't apply in another.
Despite any protestations otherwise. In GD-P you can openly piss on a Democrat with no real reason or issue behind it other than hate and bitterness, but those same actions would result in different actions being taken depending on the forum you post in. I don't see how DU can proclaim to be for Dems and allow the unadulterated bullshit they allow to stand in GD-P. I'm done trying to figure it out, and I'm done looking for consistantcy in people I don't even know, and who could care less about what I think anyways. DU is what it is, and it's what Skinner has chosen it to be.

25. Nah, the mods are just wage earners, without the wage of course.
:P

I figure the Admins know full well the state of their forums and can adjust as needs drive, and as they see fit for what's best for them. I can only imagine running a place like DU. ForkboyUnderground would have three members and one guest, so I shouldn't complain. :)

20. I have made it a point not to respond to posters who are calling
candidates or other posters names. It's hard for me to believe that someone who resorts to such juvenile behavior has a valid point to make.

21. The mods don't seem to care much about this name calling.
At least not that I can see. Maybe they are just waiting for the implosion that is bound to happen soon.

I got news, this would be a boring place if there weren't supporters from different groups here. If it was all Obama all the time, it would get old. This place seems to thrive on the adversity but I, for one, am pretty damned fed up with the name calling as well.

23. It's called IGNORE and HIDE THREAD. Stop complaining when you have the solution.
No one expects you to read threads or posters you don't like. Instead of asking DU to recreate itself so that you can have every poster and every thread meet your personal standards, get off your duff and use the tools they gave you to use to cure your problem.

Or would you rather just keep whining about it?

24. Why should thousands of people
have to change THEIR experience here because of a handful of assholes?

Ignoring users and hiding threads doesn't stop the problem of countless flamebait threads knocking decent posts off the front page. It doesn't stop flamebait from getting to the greatest page.

People should just grow the fuck up.

29. Kids hide the beer and clean up the place, the grownups are making a comeback.
It is not just you, or me.
after months of trying, the idea is starting to take hold.

this is like cleaning up a crack damaged park with syringes everywhere.
It takes time and personal responsibility.

Post good critiques and advocacy, disagree civilly, alert on the worst.
Let people know that the name calling is childish and beneath either of our candidates.

When the culture changes a bit, it will be easier to tell the trolls from DUers caught up in the degraded culture itself.
That will further the trend.
The ones who depend on attacks will say it's a free speech issue.
they understand neither discussion boards or the value of respect for others - that is to be expected, as their playground becomes "boring" as if everyone will agree. That is so not the point, of course. There are plenty of places to go for shouting matches. This is not one of them. This is DU, and it means more to many people than just a place to knock each other.

You are a part of the solution Indieleft.
I appreciate this, as do others I've discussed this with.

31. I think it's improving somewhat ...
but perhaps because more than half of DU posters are disheartened Kucinich/Edwards supporters who are more likely to call for order when the Clinton and Obama partisans do playground-style campaigning.
