I'm coming out now.
from "Meeting with the Devil at the Crossroads"

A "vision", as told by Henry Goodman

"You know where you are, Robert Johnson? You are standing in the middle of the crossroads. At midnight, that full moon is right over your head. You take one more step, you'll be in Rosedale. You take this road to the east, you'll get back over to Highway 61 in Cleveland, or you can turn around and go back down to Beulah or just go to the west and sit up on the levee and look at the River. But if you take one more step in the direction you're headed, you going to be in Rosedale at midnight under this full October moon, and you are going to have the Blues like never known to this world. My left hand will be forever wrapped around your soul, and your music will possess all who hear it. That's what's going to happen. That's what you better be prepared for. Your soul will belong to me. This is not just any crossroads. I put this "X" here for a reason, and I been waiting on you."

Oh, the gnashing of teeth. The snide comments. The virtual fistfights in GD-P.

Every damned day a pissing match. Hell, a hundred pissing matches. Clinton supporters pummeled. Obama supporters pounded.

Black vs. white.

Women vs. men.

Experience vs. youth.

A huge influx of newcomers who, unsurprisingly, seem singularly bent on nothing less than the complete destruction of the candidate they oppose.

And that's just since this morning.

Many long-time DUers like me were completely alienated by the obvious infestation of campaign hacks and political operatives posting some of the most spiteful and facetious bullshit possible from all sides. Like many, I posted the obligatory "I Quit" thread that so many here have done before.

Primary season. Argh.

But, like watching a multi-car pileup, I could not turn away. I came back to watch, but mostly stayed quiet and observed.

I watched my favorite candidates fall by the wayside. Dennis was ignored by the media and celebrated, even here, as some kind of freak, a 'garden gnome' to be joked about and ridiculed. His positions for universal health care, an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq, and the instant cancellation of NAFTA and GATT were ignored, because the shallow, unthinking and much too cynical posters could not resist making the kinds of jokes directed by third graders. Congratulations, cynics, you got your way. You even gave so-called awards to these threads.

Next was John. After all, his house is MUCH too large. He has perfect hair, and is a <gasp> Trial Lawyer! My God, he may even have used his wife's terminal cancer as sympathy for his campaign. Then, inexplicably, he caved. I'd still like to know the reason why.

Now, it's Barack. He doesn't stand for anything. Change is just a buzzword. He's black. Wait! He's not black enough! Flash in the pan. By this time, I am sure the game is rigged.

But, let me be quite clear.

God herself knows how much I want to support a woman for President. My mom is eighty years old and a life-long Democrat. I want her to live to see it.

My wife will be sixty this year and worked her ass off to reach her career goals. The baby boomers among us all know how hard these women of our generation had to work; still, women make less than men. It is killing her to see this disparity.

And, my dear daughter. She's twenty-eight, same age as Chelsea Clinton. I know how much this means to her.

I so much want to take that step back. But, I just can't.

Yep, this is the crossroads for me.

I can't walk backwards.

Today, I'm Robert Johnson.

I'm headed for Rosedale.

"I got to have that sound, Devil-Man. That sound is mine. Where do I sign?"

The man says, "You ain't got a pencil, Robert Johnson. Your word is good enough. All you got to do is keep walking north. But you better be prepared. There are consequences."

I'm supporting Barack Obama.

3. Really great post, Steve, and I know much thought went into
your decision. Welcome to the club!

I also thought Kucinich reflected how I felt the most, but got realistic when I knew that the country wasn't ready for him. Since then, it's always been Obama for me. I welcome you! :toast:

I'm waiting for Saint Paul to post on DU and explain how he chose Obama while on the Road to Damascus.

Not even close to an epiphany. To me, after researching the candidates, it came down to just plain common sense.

23. I was not an early convert
and only contributed $$$ to the campaign of Sen. Obama for the first time today. It is a tough call and in some sense, because of his relative Washington inexperience, a matter of telling those voices inside that tell you "you've been let down before" that you will not be ruled by fear of disappointment.

Not to sound corny, but you have to be able to still say, "Yes, we can!"

25. As you know, I cannot support him because of his "ex-gay" pandering stunts
Having said that, an old friend like you would never have anything but my respect. If Obama gets the nomination, as I think he will, of course I will vote for him, but really have no hopes that he will stand by gay Americans.

31. I've thought a lot about that, and it still bothers me.
That whole deal with Donnie McClurkin is disturbing.

Gay rights are everyone's rights. That thing bugs the hell out of me, and you also know how much I respect you.

I made my decision based on the whole enchilada. It ain't a perfect meal; when I bite into it, there's this weird thing that doesn't taste quite right smack in the middle. I spit it out and see Donnie.

My family is divided. We're on the verge of killing each other, not literally but politically.

I love Hillary Clinton. You know that, and my friends do, too.

This is tough stuff.

I will always be on the side of gay Americans, because we ALL are Americans. In my heart of hearts, I don't think Obama is anti-gay. God help me if I'm wrong, my brother.

40. So you've sold your soul to the devil?
You explain to us how every one of our candidates has been picked on and demeaned on DU....... EXCEPT Hillary. Yeah, she's really been given a pass here at old DU. You explain how much you'd LIKE to vote for a woman (thus demonstrating to the females in your family what a stand-up guy you are) but you just can't do it because you've been....... OBAMATIZED! Jump on many bandwagons in your lifetime, have you? Or is it because the evil Hillary just isn't the "kind" of woman we should have as President?

Wait, stop the presses, another DUer has boarded the Obama "hope train" and will ride it all the way to the promised land. And everyone who has this feel-good epiphany MUST share it with everyone else on the pages of DU because they, well.....feel so darned HOPEFUL! :wow: Save the self-aggrandizement, please. :eyes:

Your Robert Johnson analogy is way off the mark. It's a nice tale that makes for good reading, but the truth of the matter is that RJ "went to the woodshed" (as bluesmen would say) for 2 years and WORKED at becoming the greatest guitar player and bluesman, ever. (worked, mind you, not "hoped" for it). There was no supernatural mumbo-jumbo involved. Nice story though, catchy, but completely false. Robert Johnson has been my avatar since it became available, and I'm willing to bet I've FORGOTTEN more about his life and times than you'll ever know.

And just like the "crossroads" tale is all hot air and B.S., so are the words that emit from the mouth of Mr. Obama. All talk with absolutely NOTHING to back it up. People have become emotional about this Presidential race, and that's what Obama plays to, people's emotions. Filling everyone's heads with silky, candy-coated words that mean absolutely nothing. "Hope", "change", "belief". :puke: Any one of those words, plus 50 cents, will get me a newspaper in the morning. They mean nothing. They're catch-words, meant to sucker you into an emotional frenzy, and it appears it's working.

Looks like you've sacrificed logic and reason for a pocket full of "hope". And you're PROUD of this?
