Lieberman may attend GOP convention
Aides to senator say it is 'quite possible' the independent Democrat would go to support McCain
By Neil Vigdor STAFF WRITER

<snip>

Will Joseph Lieberman appear at this year's Republican National Convention?

After the week that was, fellow Democrats in Lieberman's home state said they wouldn't put it past the U.S. senator to put in an appearance at the GOP summit in St. Paul, Minn., this summer to reaffirm his support for the presumptive presidential nominee, John McCain.

Aides to Lieberman, who was in Germany and unavailable for comment, said it is "quite possible" that the self-described independent Democrat will be headed to the Twin Cities for the GOP convention.

State Democratic Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo said that would go over "like a lead balloon" for party members.

"It's very disheartening because two years ago he spoke about working to get a Democrat elected president," DiNardo said.

The criticism from members of his own party isn't a surprise to Lieberman, who lost the 2006 Democratic primary to Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont and ran as an independent to win re-election.

Lieberman's aides said the senator is viewing this year's election through the prism of an independent. He wants to see Democrats return to the party's moorings of being strong on national defense and promoting progressive values at home that were championed by President Kennedy.

Dan Gerstein, an architect of Lieberman's re-election campaign two years ago, said McCain and Lieberman share a bond as independent-minded "statesmen" who put their country's interests ahead of their party.

"In the case of this endorsement, it is so much more about the personal rather than the political," Gerstein said. "They worked together closely on a lot of issues. They've become great friends, but more than that, there's just a deep level of admiration and respect that goes beyond any single issue of ideology."

13. Have we stripped him of his committee seats yet?
I know he's no longer a superdelegate, but why hasn;t the party kicked him to the kiddy table? It was bad enough that he ran against the Democratic candidate in a fit or sour grapes to maintain his seat in Congress. He's endorsing Republicans now. Can't we just take away any power he has in the Senate?

17. A hideous man whose every action is more hideous than the last.
There are only a few others in his league of asshole: John Ashcroft, Newt Gingrich, Bill Bennett, and, as mentioned above, Zell Miller are the only examples that immediately come to mind.

20. Time for a party purge ...
after November there will be >60 Democrats in the Senate, and Joe Lieberman will have overstayed his welcome in this party.

He'll be able to join his neocon pals on the other side of the aisle, and perhaps even try to start another Mideast war (Iran? Syria? who knows?).

And to think I voted for that man for Vice President in 2000 ... ugh...

but I think the biggest mistake in his life was picking this character as his vice president, I think thats what lost him the election, of course beside stealing it by Bush

26. I don't understand the hate for him
The dems didn't campaign for him, Ned got the nominee, but the people reelected him.

Why didn't the dems support his reelection? He was the VP nominee in 2000.

Who left who first?

Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 10:27 PM by saracat
unfortunately DID campaign for him to their shame. He left the party when he didn't get the nod.He was more important to himself and his loyalty to Bush and Bush's war than he was to accept the decision of his party. The GOP elected him. They voted against their own candidate for Joe who was more of a Repug. Why wouldn't we hate him? He is as bad as Zell Miller! Now he has endorsed McCain.

35. Uh, if you didn't notice, Joe turned into a first class Bush suck-up loooong ago.
He's been a revolting cheerleader for the war from day one, and I'm sure it's his wet dream to bomb the crap out of Iran, too. He's been making a career out of stabbing liberals and Democrats in the back. He's the modern day Zell Miller.

I don't use this phrase on many people, but I'd have to say Traitor Joe is at the very tippy top of my list of people I fucking hate with everything I've got.

After we hold a larger majority in the Senate --- we will no longer ever need to mention the name Loserman again. He will be 100% irrelevant.

Now that alone is worth a damn good party!

33. "May attend" the GOP convention?
I'll be surprised if he isn't the keynote speaker. Yet another reason not to watch the thing. I can't stand is whiny voice, either.

And he needs to stop using "Democrat" in any connection to his name. So does everybody else.
