To those who say Hispanics won't vote for Obama. Explain why Santa Fe and Taos
Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 10:08 PM by Quixote1818
county's in New Mexico voted big for Obama? They are two counties with a majority of Hispanic voters. Bernalillo also has a majority of Hispanics and it voted for Obama too.

Taos County

White persons not Hispanic, percent, 2006 37.4%
Persons of Hispanic or Latino origin, percent, 2006 55.0%

Santa Fe County

Persons of Hispanic or Latino origin, percent, 2006 (b) 49.5%
White persons not Hispanic, percent, 2006 45.1%

Snip>

Rio Arriba, Los Alamos and Sandoval counties were still undecided, while Obama appears to have won Taos, Santa Fe, Bernalillo and Catron counties, with Clinton winning all the rest, according to an electoral map on KOAT-TV this morning.

Keep in mind that many of the county's on the east side of the state are mostly white and they all voted for Hillary.

1. Did New Mexico
have a primary? a caucus? I think the type of election would make a difference.

7. It's a caucus that is run like a primary. People just vote like normal.
I don't know why they call it a caucus here. It doesn't make any sense.

11. In answer to your first question, it's because Richardson
Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 10:35 PM by LandOLincoln
moved up the PRESIDENTIAL primary to February (from June) in 2004. It was called a caucus--even though it's in fact a primary, with ballots--to distinguish it from the down-ballot primary which is in June as always.

As for why Obama won Santa Fe and Taos--jeez, Quixote 1818, isn't it obvious? It's because Santa Fe and Taos are full of traditional Hispanics like, say, Julia Roberts, Marsha Mason, Gene Hackman, Randy Travis, Val Kilmer, Wes Studi and 3/4 of the New York art crowd.

On edit: left out Shirley MacLaine.
OTOH, we now also have Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame--who support Hillary--so it all balances out.

16. Actually a very small % of Santa Fe and Taos is wealthy
Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 10:41 PM by Quixote1818
If you get away from the plaza 75% of each city is more Traditional. Also, Bernalillo County is hardly wealthy. The central corridor of New Mexico along the Rio Grande is where the Spanish settled with the Pueblo Indians in 1598 and that is the area that voted for Obama. However, you are probably right that the high number of Julia Roberts types might have tipped the scale in those county's.

17. Don't presume to preach to me, Quixote. I've forgotten more
about New Mexico history than you've ever known.

The simple fact is that the huge majority of wealthy "latte Democrats" live in the central Rio Grande valley (and Taos) and the rest voted solidly for Hillary. I could post a county by county breakdown if you'd like.

By the way--you and I were both Clarkies in 2004, so I'm inclined to cut you some slack, but not when you post BS like this.

So--you gonna volunteer to help count the provisional ballots? I'm thinking I will. See you there?

The cross-tab breakdown of the latest poll shows hispanics going to Obama 2:1 in MD

In VA they are 56-44 Obama. Hillary is up shits creek without a paddle.

14. Obama
He needs to stress how he worked with Kennedy, and Mccain(even though he will disavow it and flipflip
over It) on trying to get Immagration reform that would lead to path to citizenship. And this Is
something that can be used on Mccain If he flipflops to appease conservatives. The thing to stress Is
Arizona and New Mexico show he can reach out to Hispanic. They know the Clintons but with support he Is building In Texas he can do better than the pundits are saying.
