My Mom thinks Bill Clinton is sexy
Since everyone's talking about anything other than the issues, I figured I'd chip in my two cents. For the record, I'm an Edwards supporter who's leaning toward Obama just for reasons of electability, though I'll be happy to work for any Dem nominee.

I spoke with my mother before the South Carolina primaries, and it turns out that she's been volunteering for Senator Clinton. She's mora animated than she's been in years. I know a lot of people around here have been flinging around jokes about mental illness and medication lately, but my mom really has been taking new meds for depression, and they seem to be working. It has gotten her out of the trailer, and if Senator Clinton can only get my mom to do something about all those cats and the hoarding, I'll vote for her. (The sad thing is that the woman who raised me is nothing like my mom today. I'd love to have that mom back, but that's never going to happen.)

Anyway, when I've been speaking with my mom, she's been enthusiastic about Senator Clinton, and seeing her speak. She complained at one point about not being able to see "Bill." The way she said his name gave me pause. She mentioned his name again later, in an effusive tone I recognized from when she used to talk about Elvis, or Engelbert Humperdink, or Tom Jones. My God, I though, my mom's got the hots for Bill Clinton!

The thing is, I would have thought that Bill would have stopped being sexy for my mom when the Jennifer Flowers story broke, or the Paula Jones story, or the Monica story, or the cigar story. She left my dad for being unfaithful many, many years ago, and I don't think was ever nearly the dog Clinton is.

I am sure that my mother is supporting Senator Clinton because she agrees with her on the issues, and perhaps because she is inspired by her. I'm not appalled by the fact that my mother has a sex drive, or finds any given man attractive. What I'm surprised at, genuinely surprised, is that there are still women out there (many?) who still think President Clinton is a sex symbol. I had thought that they would have had the same reaction my wife had when I told her this story, which was "Eeeeww."

1. So does mine.
I had him call her from the bar at Wild Ginger in Seattle one night some years back.

She is still in a minor swoon.

5. Too much understatement?
Too obvious? What? Bill Clinton is, in fact, a dog. That's putting it mildly. He had a zipper problem. It's a shame, and well documented, and I think more could have been accomplished under his tenure if not for his struggles with this issue. Hey, I don't hate the player--I hate the game.

9. All true
My mother does live in a trailer in South Carolina and struggles with mental illness. The hoarding, the cats, sad, true. I spent a week cleaning her house one time, but when someone's really depressed, that's like trying to put out a fire with an eyedropper. We're currently not allowed in because it's too big a mess. I suspect the 7 cats have not helped.

She did love Elvis and Tom Jones, though Englebert Humperdink was just someone she liked more as a musician than a sex symbol. Well, maybe she did think he was sexy, but it never rose to Tom Jones level. Let alone Elvis.

Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 11:31 PM by saracat
I wasn't sure about it on the TV but I gotta tell ya, in person, damn, that man is hawt! He actually helped me up on stage with him at an event 2 years ago and I felt the full dose of his charm. I remember thinking, now I get it! Even though I don't like some of his policies, I can relate to those who find him attractive.

14. You say it like it's a bad thing
Sure Bill's a hound. I admire it. My 28-year old partner thinks he hot stuff. I still find Bill super cool. It's just that neither of us particularly want to elect Hillary for President. It's not like they'll disappear if she doesn't get the nomnation; she can go back and work on being the senior Dem senator, Bill can go back to hanging out with rich foundation donors and giving speeches, and Chelsea can go back to being the hottest thing in the hedge fund industry until the time is right for her to run for election somewhere.

19. That's how the term is intended
For what it's worth, it's probably sexist, in that "dog" is considered to be nearly a complement for a sexually promiscuous male, whereas I cannot think of any similar complement for a woman (even the good ones are a more than a little mean).

The term "dog" was hip what, maybe ten years ago? I don't know if the kids today even use this term. Of course, given the atmosphere around here nowadays, you could probably say just about anything about either Senator and people would take it in absolutely the worst way.

I just meant this as a quasi humorous little anecdote. (Some of the funniest bits are personally tragic bits, but that's life.) I do think some people are out there looking to be offended.

16. Don't misunderstand me
I like Bill Clinton, and understand his charisma. I do think he's a dog-but I don't hate him for it! I was just a little surprised to find that there was still sex appeal for some women (including my own mother), given some of the things in his past.

Perhaps I misunderstand the vernacular, but where I come from, the term dog is used as an honorific in this context, usually uttered with admiration.

The one thing that did bug me about the Lewinsky thing was that we all knew about his zipper problem before he won in 1992. His denials kept the thing going for ages, and he might have been able to get something done if not for the impeachment.

I do find Monica Lewinsky to be a very attractive young woman, but I'm not jealous of Bill and his extracurricular activities. The money and power, I do think I could work up a little jealousy over, but I'm not hung up on his sex life. Not my style. More of a dad than a cad myself, and have been for a long time.

8. Oh, there's quite a few of us out here.
Friend of mine shook his hand at a booksigning and swooned like a schoolgirl touching a rock star. (We're talking a professional editor in her late 30s here.) Oh, she tried to be all wry and ironic about it, but I know that look.

LEt's just say I understood where Monica was coming from. Oh yes.

He's a charmer and exudes charisma. He's a natural seducer, the type of guy who can make you feel that you're the only one in the room even when there are hundreds of people around.

I've never met another politician like him.

And I have to admit, even though I'm a younger woman, that Bill does have a certain sex appeal. He just radiates it.

23. Thanks
Funny how folks picked right up on the dog thing but didn't on the depression, hoarding, etc. Someone recently told me that there's often something organically wrong with the brain is such cases. I don't know. The worst thing my mom ever did was to quit her job at the mall. It was just part time, but it kept her from being so isolated. She's always telling me how she's going to these doctors and how they will cure the physical symptoms that cause her to be so lethargic. I finally told her that she is probably healthier today than she ever will be again. I had meant that she's better able to visit her grandkids and live her life today then she will be in the future, so she should avail herself of that. Which she found depressing, and probably quite rightly, but after a while you just don't know what to say. I know the woman who raised me wouldn't live like that.

I do agree that she needs something, anything, to be involved with. Sitting around watching TV all day long has hurt her condition more than anything.

He can be wearing a diaper in his 70s...the chicks cant get enough of a man in a suit and a man with power (which equals $$). So put the Elephant Man in a suit, toss on $5 cologne and the chicks will be sutffin' bills down his trainer's drawers:

having a good - 2 strong people who like, respect, love each other - relationship myself, I love when I recognize it elsewhere. makes me feel good.
And yes, I got to hug him twice in 2001 - once in the spring at the New School, once after 9.11 - when he just showed up in Union Square - the electricity in the crowd was palpable. people actually started hugging each other after he left - total unknowns...No written speeches - just schmoosing us.

Sorry for ruining your expected "eeeew" thread. I used to think - Paul Newman should play him - except Newman is much older.
