In honor of Lincoln's 199th birthday...a short history lesson |
|
Once there was a senator from New York. This senator was thought to be the overwhelming choice of the party for a presidential nomination. And yet, somehow, this senator lost out to a brilliant, if little-known, politician from Illinois. And the rest is history.
Clinton and Obama? Hopefully. But the real answer is Seward and Lincoln, 148 years ago.
I'm very much looking forward to history repeating itself soon.

Until I opened your post and realized you sound like just another cult of personality fan.

The Obama comparisons here are getting rather humorous. Do you people realize how silly you look?

And Obama does too, I think. He used Springfield to great effect when he announced his candidacy. You can bet we'll hear Lincoln invoked later on today.

14. I was in the same situation with my mom... |
|
and my brother sent her a nice gift that arrived on time. Since my family is exactly dysfunctional like Ray Romano's on TV, I knew I had to come up with some magic for mom,,,, to beat out my brother.
So I crafted an e-mail. Not just any e-mail, but a sentimental story from our family's past that demonstrated how much I know now, what she did for me then. I won't go too into detail about it, but suffice to say, it hit the mark. A tear jerker. My mom was so happy. And my brother,,,, yeah you know it, I rubbed it in. Right into his face.
But in the end,,, isn't that why we buy pre-made sentiment on cards and send gifts? SO that we don't actually have to open up?
Good luck with your dad. He must be a fine fellow being born on that day.

10. A little know politician with 34 yrs experience in politics |
|
Okay, so Obama is MLK, JFK, RFK, and now Lincoln. How long until he is the second coming of Christ? Calling it a Cult of personality is starting to look like its putting it mildly.

12. Who had 34 years in politics? Not Lincoln. |
|
He served in the Illinois legislature (not sure for how long) and one term in Congress during the 1840s. Then he was out of politics until he ran for the Senate in 1858, and then he was president for just over 4 years. How do you get 34 years from that?

So sorry, I confused 1834 with 34 yrs. He was actually only in govt for 26 yrs. Roughly 3 times as long as Obama, if you want to be generous and compare his state legislative experience to Lincoln's extensive experience and involvement in federal government.
But hey, he's MLK, he's JFK, he's RFK, he's Lincoln.
Total cult of personality. Bill Clinton was apparently our very last president ever to have to actually have the qualifications for the job. Since Duyba, anybody can apparently have the job. All we have to do is PRETEND they are qualified, or resemble some one who was, or something -- gawd knows what.

Lincoln had 2 years in Congress. That's it before he was elected president. The rest was on the state level or in losing elections. Where your "extensive involvement" comes from is beyond me.
And you keep trotting out that "cult" line as if saying it enough will change something. It won't.
Come Wednesday morning, Obama won't have any serious competition any more. Get over it.

13. Obama is no JFK. He's bigger. Or so says Chris Matthews |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 12:35 AM by Universitario
Well, his movement is the New Testament... the second coming of Christ? Not so sure. "I've been following politics since I was about 5," said Mr. Matthews. "I've never seen anything like this. This is bigger than Kennedy. comes along, and he seems to have the answers. This is the New Testament. This is surprising." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/06/chris-matthews-gushes-o_n_85265.html

That is Barack Obama. Reshuffles decades old dem proposals, makes them more palatable to rethugs, and calls it "transformational."
