This is like a high school election!
Hillary is the really smart girl, who could probably do really good things for her school. She could raise a lot of money, do a lot of activities, actually make student government do something. Alas, she is just not that popular, especially with boys and the girls who have a crush on the other candidate. She promises to get more AP classes, do more community activities, get more support for kids who need help with homework, etc.

Barack is the cool kid. He has no reason to be here, except for that fact that he's charismatic, good looking, energetic. He's so magnetic he even gets Hillary's few friends to paint posters for him. Does he really know what he is going to do in student government? No, but he's popular. He promises that he's going to get pop machines everywhere, and make every Wednesday a day-off..
His only problem is that Principal McCain will end up doing all the work if he's elected.

It looks effortless, because its so well thought out.

Hillary is Tracy Flick.

5. I ran for the position of "Social Events Chairman"
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 09:09 AM by Angela Shelley
made fliers, had a program, made a real good speech.

The other candidate, Greg, only made one poster and his speech was about 20 seconds long.

His campaign slogan: "Greg is a good egg".

Greg was elected.

7. Dumb
Your imaginary hip, black friend is also a proven heavy lifter with more legislative achievements to his credit in what has been a longer career than hers, and also has as many detailed plans on his campaign platform.

Obama's campaign understands that Democrats have lost plenty of presidential elections by nominating the person who sounds most knowledgable on the issue but has little else to offer.

Try to get the cartoon imagery out of your head and you'll do better.

9. Are you kidding?
More legislative achievements? A career that has been longer than hers? Now that's imagery.

His experience really includes being in the state legislature because he was aiming for president once he got into the Senate. In the Senate, he has one of the highest missed-voting records and has not called a meeting for the committee he is chair of. The only legislation he passed involved lobbyists who could still have meals as long as they were standing up. His voting record is almost identical to Clinton's.

The plans of his campaign platform were written by former Clinton advisors. The only real difference is health care. That issue he flip-flopped on, once supporting a single-payer. He switched his stance once he was running for president, even though he doesn't support that kind of politics. He says his plan wouldn't force people to buy health care they can't afford. While, if it's not mandated, they will have to somehow afford a fine when they go to the hospital.

It's a true analogy. He has made it to where he is today because he surfed in on a wave of attention because he was a fresh face and made good TV. He has not gotten where he is today because of any of his legislative or career achievements. The one true advantage he has is the Iraq War, but he also played politics when he said he would not have known how he would've voted in defense of John Kerry.

The analogy is true. He's the jock, and the cool kid. Hillary should know that guys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses, and that other girls will be jealous of her independence.

First, there are many others who have state legislature records similar to his. Their only problem is that they're not hip.

http://www.ontheissues.org/Senate/Hillary_Clinton.htm

That is a link of Hillary's accomplishments, going all the way back to the 60s. Her accomplishments have done real things for real people.

Statistics: Barack Obama has sponsored 129 bills since Jan 4, 2005, of which 120 haven't made it out of committee (Poor) and 1 were successfully enacted (Average, relative to peers). Obama has co-sponsored 545 bills during the same time period (Average, relative to peers).

Statistics: Hillary Clinton has sponsored 354 bills since Jan 22, 2001, of which 307 haven't made it out of committee (Extremely Poor) and 2 were successfully enacted (Average, relative to peers). Clinton has co-sponsored 1723 bills during the same time period (Average, relative to peers).

Statistic: Barack Obama missed 185 of 1098 votes (17%) since Jan 6, 2005 (Extremely Poor relative to peers).

Statistic: Hillary Clinton missed 152 of 2406 votes (6%) since Jan 23, 2001 (Poor relative to peers).

Plus, Barack has spent all of his time in a Democratic controlled Congress, while most of Hillary's record was during a Republican controlled Congress.

14. Those records are similar, actually. I wouldn't be putting those out there
if I were you, as they don't back up the "Clinton is smart and competent and Obama isn't" frame. His legislative success is average, as is hers. His sponsoring is "poor," but her sponsoring is "extremely poor." Both of their co-sponsoring is average. And both of their missed-vote totals are bad.

16. Her "accomplishments" as opposed to legislative achievements
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 09:53 AM by BeyondGeography
You have no argument on the legislative front, where he has four more years life experience than she does. And the first two years of his U.S. Senate term were under a Republican-controlled Congress, during which he managed to get two bills passed that tie directly into his campaign narrative: the most substantial ethics reform bill since Watergate and a government transparency bill co-sponsored with uber-conservative Tom Coburn.

15. It's really Middle School lunchroom politics...
Not just in the main arena,
but all over... look at our boards here,
look at the cable news coverage,
look at the Sunday political slapfests...
It's all about who said what,
and who went where,
who looks good,
who has the snappy repartee,
who has the best posse,
and who's on whose side.
So middle school.

the people with real vision are out,
considered 'oddballs,' but I guess
the school metaphor continues into real life.
