Part of Barack Obama's Campaign Fulfills King's Dream: Election of a Black Prez is THE MOUNTAINTOP
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 04:48 PM by Dems Will Win

Seems to me, the election of a black President would mean that we have reached a new level of equality in America, it would be the Promised Land, the MOUNTAINTOP for blacks, Latinos and Whites alike. Here's what King said in a speech the day before he was shot:

Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop.

And I don't mind.

Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!

This is what is so exciting about Barack. He is not only going to fulfill the assassinated legacy of JFK and RFK he also will fulfill the Dream of King and we shall all arrive at the Mountaintop by voting for him to change the world irrevocably.

PLEASE RECOMMEND IF YOU AGREE WITH THIS REALIZATION

6. So, educate yourself. The media shouldn't be educating you, which is what it sounds like
based on the fact that you didn't even know about the letter, while much of DU did.

Excerpt from the letter Martin L King III sent to John Edwards:

I am disturbed by how little attention the topic of economic justice has received during this campaign. I want to challenge all candidates to follow your lead, and speak up loudly and forcefully on the issue of economic justice in America.

From our conversation yesterday, I know this is personal for you. I know you know what it means to come from nothing. I know you know what it means to get the opportunities you need to build a better life. And, I know you know that injustice is alive and well in America, because millions of people will never get the same opportunities you had.

I believe that now, more than ever, we need a leader who wakes up every morning with the knowledge of that injustice in the forefront of their minds, and who knows that when we commit ourselves to a cause as a nation, we can make major strides in our own lifetimes. My father was not driven by an illusory vision of a perfect society. He was driven by the certain knowledge that when people of good faith and strong principles commit to making things better, we can change hearts, we can change minds, and we can change lives.

So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud.
Sincerely,
Martin L. King, III

7. I think the poster...
is referring to the fact that a black man is being seriously considered as President of the United States. I'm sure there are still those who are very fearful of just that.

11. That's the valid inference.
It's unlikely we'd suddenly be enlightened to do it enough only when we actually did it.

Rather like saying I'm only smart enough to pass the test when I'm actually taking it. Potentiality usually precedes the act itself.

Of course, that is a problem, because the assumption is that unless you actually take and pass the test, actually do the act, that you're completely incapable of it. So failing the math test because, say, you have a fever and are throwing up, or because of test anxiety, or simply because you don't have a pencil ... obviously must mean that you're incapable of passing the test.

9. thats really sad if the "mountain top" is all about color
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 05:39 PM by DiamondJay
as the platform of Obama is. if he weren't black, he'd just be another senator. the "mountaintop" should be more than just affirmative action. it should be about the right policies which help the most Americans, not about being able to say "oh we've had a black president, we're SOO not racist!" If obama had a grasp on issues or even talked about them, i'd support him. but all he talks about is "change and hope" but he doesn't mention anything to change or what kind of policies for which to hope

Read his book. There is no substance to justify the hype.

12. You've really mixed your metaphor....
The mountaintop was not the 'final' destination of the journey, only a vantage point from which to see the Promised Land. I see Obama's presidency as a step towards King's prophecy but, given the continued racial disparity in this country, certainly not evidence of reaching the Promised Land.
