I do think the Dems will carry Virginia in the fall, but it's Obama the GOP wants to go up against. They've already thrown everything they can at Hillary and know she can take anything they dish out. Wait til they start laying into Obama -- it won't be pretty.

Perhaps they've made a tactical error today, and thought McCain would do better. Don't forget the polls in NH before the primary showing McCain was in dire need of help against Romney.

|
The Republcian game plan was to end their race, so they could send hundreds of thousands of votes in key states to vote for Hillary, in an attempt to give her the nomination. They know what everyone here knows - Hillary is the candidate they can beat, Obama is the one who will beat them.

30% of Obama's voters were NOT Democrats. 8% identified as Republicans and the remaining 22% identifed either as independents or other (which would include any other party affiliation). They were NOT Clinton votes. Sheesh.

81. I just took a peek at the site with all the morans ... |
|
They have their version of a banner right on their Home Page, so no one can miss it:
"Primary voters: Vote against McCain! Vote for deadlock! Vote anyone but McCain."
How much influence do they have, anyway? Does anyone know? Or are they just dogs howling in a windstorm? One of their members (Buckhead?) took down Dan Rather, but he had the benefit of Roger Stone's and Rove's direct involvement.
They seem pleased with Obama winning. Hard to tell from their posts if they're more happy about Huckabee squeezing McCain, or about Hillary getting beaten. Some of them expressing great dismay at the prospect of a President Huckabee. Seems like that's something we can all relate to.
If the media can sell them on a disaster like bush, I think the media will be able to sell them on McCain in the GE, and they'll vote their party then.
(I posted this on another thread but this thread seems to have the most traction on this subject.)

I heard some guy from Virginia on a RW call in show last night saying he was gonna cross over and vote for Clinton in the Dem primary b/c he thought Obama would be harder for his side to beat in the general. I think it's entirely possible that, while some Republicans were crossing over to vote for Clinton because they think Obama is the stronger candidate, other Republicans were crossing over to vote for Obama because they think Clinton is the stronger candidate.
Then we have to factor in all the Republicans who might be voting for Obama because they really are responding to his message of change. Plus we can't dismiss all the Repulicans crossing over to vote for Clinton because Rush and Ann Coulter have endorsed her in their pathetic delusions that McCain and Huckabee aren't "real" conservatives.
So this 30% surge-in could be good for Clinton or bad for Clinton or good for Obama or bad for Obama--or the lot of 'em could have just canceled each other out, leaving it only a contest decided by the Democrats.

I don't know the answer to this. But this republican crossign over to vote for our candidate has me really worry.. They will vote for whomever their candidate in the GE. I just don't trust them
And who in hell decided that Virginia should have open primaries? In my State of Florida, we don't have that, and i believe is unfair.

75. There was an 8% gap in 2000 and 04, but only a 2% gap in '96 |
|
In 1996 Clinton beat Dole nationally by a 8.5% gap. So it's a rosy scenario for Obama to win VA, but he could certainly put it in play and force the GOP to divert funds & resources to take it over. Plus, keep in mind that the state has been trending bluer in the past few years. A win is unlikely, but not out of the question.

Friends, family, coworkers, guys from my old platoon... you really think someone is untrustworthy simply because of his or her party registration?
Then again I don't know if "trust" is the issue here; we're the ones who made the rules that said they could vote in our primary if they wanted to. I personally think it says something that they dislike our other candidate so much that they'll forgo a choice in their own party's nomination (and stop somebody that the base seems to really hate) just to keep her from getting our nomination, since that seems to be the narrative most of DU buys into.

The GOP is playing them like a fiddle. I'm afraid they are in for a very rude awakening, unfortunately for us all.

59. No, that's what THEY think |
|
And if the GOP machine really thinks that, I wonder what they have up their sleeve. If they didn't have a plan they wouldn't being playing it this way. That's what scares me.
And are you callng me a racist? I wouldn't go there if I were you.

79. And your evidence for this is? |
|
Well, where is it? Let's get some evidence of reps being told to vote for Obama. Otherwise this is nothing more than a conspiracy theory fuelled by paranoia.
If the reps are so organized, how come Huckabee is beating McCain in VA (barely, at the moment)?

89. Sorry... this conversation lost me when I was called a racist. |
|
In fact, I'm seriously wondering if DU is a good place for me to be right now. I've fought long and hard for Dems all my life but I'll not have someone get in my face and call me a racist. Incredible.
Perhaps someone else will be willing to explain this kind of strategy to you in more detail. I lived in Virginia for years and witnessed it firsthand.
Later...

60. I love Obama, i have supported him and voted for him in my |
|
State Primary.. however, I am not sure anymore if he will be capable of ressisting the republican machine in the GE. Wait for him to be called a Muslim, Black, black black, black and thousands of times black..
I know deep in myheart he is qualified to be President, to be my president, i dont know if he is qualified to stand against their evil machine.. Look at what they did to Kerry and Gore.. I am starting to think hillary is the only that could fight back to them.. Obama is too dreamy.. he needs to wake up and talk to me and assure me that he will fight back at every lie, every insult and every swiftboat...

the total game plan...the republicans are voting Obama because they know he'll lose to McCain.........its simple to figure out.......the repubs will never vote for a Dem in the GE...because of party unity...you know it.I know it.but some people think Obama is a shoo in...think again.....we lose in 08.....

Let them dream on. The southern red states that Obama has won so far will remain red in the GE.

in the bizarro world of conspiracyland.
I can just see it now, instead of claiming the election was stolen, you're going to spend the next 4 years nursing a conspiracy theory that the nomination was stolen before the election. Who do you think picked Obama to dash our hopes - the trilateral commission, the bilderbergers, or the illuminati?

104. My own family has done the very same thing to Republicans in the Ohio primaries. |
|
I rememeber my parents changing partys to fuck things up for the Republicans way back when. They then voted for the Dem in the generalelection. This shit really goes on. believe it or not. if we're wrong, we're wrong and we'll eat crow. fact is though, this shit really goes on.

67. That's partly so they can vote for the perceived "weaker" Dem candidate |
|
because they know McCain is their nominee, and/or perhaps because their local races are decided in the Democratic primary (as they often are here in Texas)?
My dad, a typical white East Texan Southerner, will enthusiastically vote for Hillary because he thinks she'll lose. Keep in mind, though, his spoiler plan backfired in 1992, when he voted for Bill Clinton. ;)

I don't think they would worry about who they had to face in the GE. I think some people have been so traumatized by Karl Rove they see him under every rock.
