We may not win there unless we win by a big margin, but we are going to make the GOP fight for Virginia.

After all, if we keep only trying to win with the Blue states, eventually that's gonna work, right? Right?

They're not going to go for someone with a Massachusetts voting record. Instead of playing "purge the impure," we should get a grip on the local political realities of individual Party members.

59. The people of Virginia weren't clamoring for retroactive immunity
...for phone companies.

I don't know if Jim Webb cast that vote because of donations from phone company lobbyists or if he just agrees with retroactive immunity philosophically, but it wasn't a vote he had to cast to stay in office.

25. I made a thread about this last week, Mark Warner is the key
With him on the ticket, it will turn out a lot of SW VA voting on the Democratic ticket. Someone with crossover appeal, like Obama, can clean up in an area like that, plus energizing the base in NoVa and Va Beach will put him over the top, even if on the coattails of Warner.

Please don't talk about states you know nothing about.

and I don't think Webb will be chosen simply because he hasn't been in the senate very long...but considering the state has a Dem governor and he has military and bipartisan appeal, Webb could be an interesting pick...

What about Kaine? I heard Obama is close to him. I've heard it floated as a possibility...

This is getting exciting. My friend is in VA and says there's tons of election coverage and it sounds like the place is getting increasingly blue. Granted, he lives near DC which is the liberal part of the state....

You're embarrassing yourself. I'm from Virginia.
We have a Democratic Governor. We have one Democratic Senator, who is about to be joined by our former Democratic Governor - Mark Warner - giving us two Democratic Senators. John Kerry won 45% of the vote in Virginia in 2004. Our state was the first state in the entire country to have an elected African American Governor - who was, by the way, a Democrat.

Our state is a purple state that WILL swing toward Obama in the General Election if he campaigns here.

You look like an idiot.

57. Exactly.
All signs are pointing to an Obama blow out against John McCain in a general election. If you come out to vote in a Primary, you are highly likely to come out and vote for the same candidate in the General. Obama has brought in an unprecedented number of new voters in Virginia. We will need to win the purple states - such as Virginia - in the General Election. If Al Gore had carried Virginia in 2000 would have become President. The same goes for Kerry.

Both Obama and Hillary can win the standard Democratic strongholds - New York, California, Mass, New Jersey, those are all ours in the General. It's the purple states that matter. Obama even has the ability to flip a few red states - Georgia comes to mind. A state, I believe Bill Clinton won in 1992.

We should look for our silver linings where we can find them I just think that pooping on Obama victories is not the way to do that.

In a couple of months, we're gonna be needed to man the barricades against the GOP assault. Something to think about.

But I disgree. I think pooping on his victories that clearly show crossover votes in amazing numbers means something weird is going on and we should face facts. Its an Anti-Clinton vote in a red state, not pro-Obama.

72. Unfortunately that leads to another scenario
Because what it shows is the anti-Clinton vote is strong enough amongst GOPers that they will vote in a Dem primary to vote against her.

That is not good for us in making the argument of electability in the face of what I would concede could be a close race with McCain.

93. The demographics of Virginia are trending toward us
There is large population growth in northern Virginia and that's a mostly Democratic area. Virginia will be in play this time. The GOP may have an advantage but they are going to have to fight for it.

63. More like full of reality. The last Dem to carry VA was LBJ. Before that it was Truman. before that,
the South was a Democratic party stronghold due to the whole reconstruction thing.

104. red and blue is no more. the rules are being rewritten. "hope" springs eternal.
if you cannot see the swell of change before you, and you ignore all that is happening around you, and you look to the past for guidance in this election, you are doomed to fail.

56. I think VA is one of our better shots in terms of southern states
It has definitely been trending in our direction if you look at the "partisan voting index" over the last several presidential elections. I'm not sure if it will yet be in our grasp by the time of the November elections, but it's the rare southern state that is actually trending towards the Democrats, and not worth writing off unless we're going into the election conceding the south altogether.

82. Thanks for shitting on all the work Virginian Dems have done:
2005: Tim Kaine wins governorship
2006: Jim Webb wins Senate race
2007: Democrats get a net gain for both State Houses

We have a shot in Virginia in 2008. Have you forgotten the changes in NoVa? Oh, wait, this is all about sour grapes.

Nice, what if Hillary gets the nom? You are already CONCEDING Virginia?

They've elected a Democratic Governor and Senator. That obviously means that they will elect Democrats.

I don't know how I could spell it out for you any easier.
