What would DU have looked like in 1960, 1968, or 1972? |
|
You know, Democrat primaries that were truly nasty and in which candidates actually differed on the issues?
Would Humphrey backers have accused JFK of stealing WV?
What would have happened after Daley beat the hell out of everyone in '68?
What about Muskie falling apart?

I kind of think we are in the updated version of 1968 now.

2. Well, in 1960 it would have been the Stevenson people railing against the Kennedy machine |
|
I know, because we have letters my mother-in-law wrote on the subject in 1959 or 1960 on that very thing! It's so interesting to me now.

4. I'm sure plenty of people would be calling JFK a fraud and a thief... |
|
plenty more would be trying to draft LBJ to run again (68) plenty more would be calling Humphrey a career politican trying to run again (68) and lord only knows what with McGovern.

Everyone would be arguing about how someone like Daley or other political bosses would try to manipulate the brokered convention or something to the likes.

13. They had them, but they didn't mean much |
|
Mostly they were just popularity contests. Oftentimes, a candidate wouldn't even be on the ballot himself, and a "surrogate" would run in his place (or her place, if it was Shirley Chisholm).

BTW Daley didn't beat hell out of anyone. His cops, yeah. But I know someone they missed. He's always been fast on his feet.

And, I think our current candidates are trying to avoid the "nasty" stuff in an attempt to discuss acutal issues, all while trying to be "Jesus Christ, Superstar".

12. '72 McGovern, Gene McCarthy and Mayor Lindsey would have been the top candidates on DU |
|
In '68 lots of DUers would have been for McCarthy and considered RFK coming in after McCarthy embarrassed LBJ in NH (didn't win but came close) as being, well, ruthless. There would have been a smattering of Humphrey supporters, too. 1960 I think a lot of Duers would have hoped Adlai Stevenson would run again against that upstart John F. Kennedy.

The year when pretty much every registered Democrat in America ran for president at one point or another.
Jimmy Carter ("fundie!") Mo Udall ("Mormon wierdo with seven wives!") Fred Harris ("unelectable! And his wife is crazy!") Sargent Shriver ("stalking horse for Teddy!") George Wallace ("AAAAAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!") Hubert Humphrey ("washed up has-been!") Jerry Brown ("nut!") Frank Church ("He's from Idaho! Must be a closet puke!") Scoop Jackson ("Neocon!") Terry Sanford ("Egghead! And Duke sucks!") Lloyd Bentsen ("DINO!") Milton Shapp ("who?") ....actually, he was the governor of Pennsylvania Walter Mondale ("Wimp!")
