Obama-"Our dreams will not be deferred" |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 10:14 PM by Kristi1696
Barack Obama, just now, in Madison. I am SO down with that Langston Hughes reference.
So powerful. So poignant.
Here's the excellent poem for reference.
Dream Deferred What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?

Thanks for posting that poem. I wasn't familiar with it. It certainly says it all!
As many Obama speeches as I've watched, and as familiar as some parts of the stump have become, and as "routine" as his standard themes are -- he never fails to make me grin like a hopemonger, bring a tear in my eye, and re-inspire me work harder towards our common goals.
This speech in Madison was one of his best yet.

3. That's probably the most famous poem in the African American literary tradition |
|
The term "dream deferred" has been a fixture in African American thought and writing since Hughes' poem was published.

Another area of my education that's lacking, which I'll have to dig into some more.
The older I get, the more I learn about how insular my life has been and how very little I know.

16. I'm not a poetry person, but Hughes has always blown my mind. |
|
I still vividly remember reading 'Let America Be America Again' in high school. It knocked my on my ass, intellectually speaking. Powerful stuff.

That poem should be the official poem of the Democratic party. I swear, it touches on everything.
So true. So blunt. Just truly great.

Hint to Hillary supporters: It's not plagiarism if you're supposed to understand the reference.

20. I think it is especially poignant, considering so many have suggested Obama "defer" his WH bid... |
|
To let Hillary have a chance and try again in 8 years, when he's older and more experienced.
I think he was also sending the message that his dream too, will not be deferred.

6. Powerfoul and poignant, yet WHAT DREAMS are you referring to? |
|
What dream or vision does Barack have for this country? I just can't stand how many people are hooking on to this when they don't even know what he is talking about.

How will you accomplish that change? Inspire us to do what? Obama, you can win my vote if you stop speaking in generalities!

13. Most of that are democratic ideals |
|
that are unacceptable to many Republicans. Those are plans and ideas -- that everyone has. He does not go into detail as to how he will somehow get this done and change Washington to get his ideas through.
Clinton went in with his universal healthcare. He didn't get it. Bush went in with his private social security portfolios. He didn't get it.
How will a candidate propelled by the Democratic party machine make any changes?

18. Pay attention and you'll learn. |

Unless you're too busy whining that it can't be done.
Getting busy and helping instead of being just another naysayer might actually have an effect, too.

However, I am far from an Obama speech aficionado!
So I guess that I can look forward to hearing it again! Great!

17. Fantastic Line.. I also noticed he took more McCain swings then he |
|
normally does in his stump speech.. you can see he's preparing for the big fight if he wins enough to move on. I think it's smart - it shows he can throw punches, and he's starting to aim across the aisle.

22. Did he? I sorta fell asleep about 9 words into McCain's speech |
|
to the 14 people who showed up to celebrate his victory.
Man.. watching Obama speak and then McCain speak is sort of like watching the Captain of the Debate team go a round against a 3rd grader with a speach impediment. It's really not fair.. and that's one huge advantage we'll have going into the fall if Obama wins this.

24. Yeah, I wasn't really paying attention... |
|
I only noticed that line because my boyfriend was watching it (God bless his patient soul) and asked me if McCain was using a teleprompter. So his dig on "hope" was the 9 words I heard before lapsing back into unconsciousness again. ;)
