Time out for Trivia....what's the longest a US state has gone "Red" in the GE?
Since we're talking about all 50 states this year and not just Iowa and New Hampshire...what's the longest a State has *continously* voted electorally for the GOP candidate instead of the Democrat?

(The longest Blue state would be too easy--since Minnesota didn't go Reagan in '84. Ja, they've been voting for Democrats since 1976--32 years, you betcha.)

As has Virginia. Not sure if they are the longest though.

Arizona went Republican in every election from 1952 to 1992 inclusive. (Clinton won it in '96.)

15. Oops! Thanks. Only DC is a solid color throughout its history
I may be wrong here, too, but I think DC is the only electoral jurisdiction to solidly support one party in its whole electoral college history.

20. I think you win, Vermont went GOP from 1860-1964, one of two states FDR never won...
The other was Maine. But Wilson won Maine (largely due to Taft and Roosevelt splitting the vote).

33. At this point I'm something of a Whig...
...since Jackson is probably my least favorite Dem president, and they ran essentially on the principle of fighting a unitary executive.

18. Believe it or not....
...the answer is Pennsylvania!

If you count Roosevelt's run as the Progressive Party candidate in 1912, it went Republican every election from 1856 to 1932, a total of 19 straight elections or 78 years. It's actually only been reliably "blue" since Clinton won it in 1992.

25. Whoops. Sorry. PA is a close second, relatively speaking.
1860-1932. However, Vermont never voted for a Democrat between 1828 and 1964. 140 years. Damn.

26. Awesome! Where did you find that out? (and an ANSWER to MY QUESTION)
You see, I was only looking at states that have been voting Republican AND STILL DO--and I didn't think it would be necessary to go all the way back to the 19th century to figure that out.

By my count, the States that have been Red since 1968 are--Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, both Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Alaska, and Virginia. Every one of these states voted for Johnson in 1964 and then Nixon 4 years later. Every other state has voted either Democratic or Independent since then, (Tell me if you think I skipped one!)

So the answer to MY question would be a 10-way tie for 40 years of Republican voting. BTW, since we're not looking just at blue states that are STILL Blue states, what's the record on the Democratic side?

35. The Blue State record would be Georgia
which (except for 1864, which doesn't count for obvious reasons) went for a Democrat every year from 1852 to 1964.

Every town in Vermont has a statute to Civil War soldiers.

34. Lest we forget how close we still are to the Civil War...
I'm 31.

My dad, when he was a kid, worked in the fields in my grandparents' (his parents') indigo and cotton farm. Out in the fields, he met a hand named "Manchild". He was called that because he was born before emancipation, and his mother didn't want to give him a name because she knew he would be taken from him.

We're a lot closer to those days than we think.

It went blue from 1844-1964, even during reconstruction.

voting for Zachary Taylor over Lewis Cass. But yes, it has the longest Democratic run in history, 112 years.
