Do You Remember What GD:P Was Like During The '68 Primaries?
I was looking through some old files tonight, and found this screenshot I made back then.

166. How do you cleanly remove a "flower" stuck to your car?
Those suckers might fade on you, but never found a way to remove them once they had firmly bonded with one's exterior.

Somewhere I might have pictures to prove it!

While I like some of the topic titles, all of them except the MLK one are much more May 1968 than Feb 1968.

I have been thinking a lot about 1968 recently as each 40th anniversary event appears on the calendar. When I saw on the front page of the local paper one of the iconic photographs from the Tet offensive that is seared into all our minds, I was so shocked and so stunned by the rush of memories that I could barely function for hours. I really dread reliving so many things from that year; so much horror, pain, suffering, conflict, alienation, and fear for our future; our hopes pinned on those few political leaders with any courage, briefly soaring but quickly crashing in the face of power struggles, inompetence, betrayal, or the worst, assassinations. Only the Christmas Eve view of our first earthrise as Apollo emerged from behind the moon, seeing our tiny blue marble from this totally new perspective, only this shared experience was able to unite us all, however briefly. Our world would never be the same, and neither would we.

Maybe we should have a forum where we can discuss those events of 1968 and how they are reflected in 2008 and in us. I will put that in a post and request. I know there will be many times when it would be good for me to be able talk with others here and find comfort and understanding. Many of you were in the middle of all that and are certain to reflect many different viewpoints. It would also be a good way for those of us who understand that period to convey some of that to those who are younger. If you are like me, you have never really written down your experiences to be shared with others; you might have told a few stories to your family or friends, prompted by old pictures or a college yearbook,

BTW in 1968 and 1969, I was working with some of the early hypertext and related systems, early relatives of the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) that implements the World-Wide Web including DU. We were using light-pens to interact with our expensive video screens; the mouse was just being invented and integrated into the systems. We mostly used keyboard controls (Tab, arrows) to move around among display objects.

35. Drunken Irishmen
Casey McCarthy had just arrived in New York City
and was amazed at the enormity of everything.

Having drunk a pint or two on the flight over,
he sorely needed to relieve himself. The first door he entered happened
to be a large health club, and he asked the clerk if he might use the men's room.

The clerk said certainly and told Casey the men's room
was the third door down the corridor on the left.
Now Casey, trying to appear sober, weaved his way down the hallway
remembering some of the directions.

When he reached the third door, he turned RIGHT ,
opened the door and immediately fell into the deep end of a pool.

The clerk, realizing Casey's mistake, ran down the hall
and burst through the door, prepared to save him,

and heard Casey shout, "Don't flush, I'm in here!"

43. Thank you, great joke.
Here's one for you.

An Irishman had been drinking at a pub all night. The bartender finally said that the bar is closing. So the Irishman stood up to leave fell flat on his face. He tried to stand one more time; same result. He figured he'll crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that will sober him up. Once outside, he stood up and fell on his face again.

So he decided to crawl the four blocks home. When he arrived at the door he stood up and fell flat on his face. He crawled through the door and into his bedroom. When he reached his bed he tried one more time to stand up. This time he managed to pull himself upright, but he quickly fell right into the bed and is sound asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

He was awakened the next morning to his wife standing over him, shouting, "SO YOU'VE BEEN DRINKING AGAIN!" Putting on an innocent look, and intent on bluffing it out he said, "What makes you say that?" "The pub just called; you left your wheelchair there again."

with your original statement but me, being of Irish decent, I
sympathize on your lack of drunken judgement implementing really good
sardonic Irish black humor.

Great Joke on this one but the first one lacked the spirt of the thread.

You are forgiven, now take your mental wheelchair and crawl back to bed.

LOL......... Peace out.

46. Haha! Now THAT'S a joke we can all rally behind. Here's another.
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 03:45 AM by Bicoastal
Irishman goes to a bar and orders "Three shot glasses of your finest Irish Whisky." Bartender does, and watches him drink each one down, one after the other.

Next day, he comes and does the same thing. The Barkeep says "You know, I can put all three shots into a tumbler for ya." "Oh don't do that, my good man," sez Irish.

"Ya see, I've got a brother Seamus in Dublin who I never see, and another brother Cameron in London who never sees either of us. So what we do is when any of us go to a pub, we each ask for three glasses of whiskey--and so instead of being so far away, it's just like we're drinking together back home."

How charming, thinks the Bartender.

This goes on for a few weeks, until one day, the Irish man comes in and says, "TWO shot glasses of your finest Irish Whiskey, my good man." Bartender does, and waits until the Irishman has drunk both, then says, carefully, "Something happened to Seamus or Cameron, I guess. My condolences."

"What? No, they're both fine and in quite good health!"

"Well, then why only two shot glasses?"

"Ah, that," laughs the Irishman. "Ya see, yesterday I finally quit drinking..."

140. Get clean for Gene! "We do not need presidents who are bigger than the country..."

McCarthy’s presidential campaign worked outside normal Democratic Party channels. Volunteers, many of whom were students opposed to the war, went from door to door trying to convince voters to support McCarthy. Their slogan was “Clean for Gene,” meaning that they cut their long hair and put on their best clothes to campaign for McCarthy.

http://ca.encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761589343/McCarthy_Eugene.html

"There is only one thing to do - take it to the country!" Senator McCarthy angrily declared in a Capitol corridor 15 months before the 1968 election, after hearing the Johnson administration make its case for the legality of the war.

Mr. McCarthy, a man of needling wit, triggered one of the most tumultuous years in American political history. With the war taking scores of thousands of American and Vietnamese lives, he rallied throngs against this "costly exercise in futility" and stoked a fiery national debate over the World War II model of an all-powerful presidency. He challenged Johnson in a primary, and the president, facing almost certain defeat, ended up withdrawing from the race.

Mr. McCarthy was a disarming presence on the stump as he mixed a wry tone and a hard, existential edge in challenging the White House, the Pentagon and the superpower swagger of modern politicians.

An acid-tongued campaigner, Mr. McCarthy was sometimes a puzzlement, veering from inspired speechifying to moody languishing. But he was the singular candidate of the Vietnam War protest, serving up politics and poetry, theology and baseball in a blend that entranced the "Clean for Gene" legions who flocked to his insurgent's call.

"We do not need presidents who are bigger than the country, but rather ones who speak for it and support it," he told them. His supporters were delighted by what they saw as his candor, yet some were troubled by the diffidence that marked his public persona.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/11/national/11mccarthy.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&pagewanted=1&adxnnlx=1202926129-B8/UV11bPgaiu91VC0lzWA

if I'm not mistaken. That is one of the differences between 1968 and 2008 - those radical groups like SDS and the Black Panthers are not really significant anymore, if they even exist at all. However, now it is the RW radical groups that make all the noise & get the media attention - the Minutemen, the Religious Right, Fred Phelps, Ann Coulter, etc - that help move the center to the right.

78. Very well done ....a few errors though
1.Vice President Humphrey was not involved in the race until President Johnson withdrew from the contest on March 31 1968. The main battles on DU during February 1968 would have presumably been between President Johnson's and Senator McCarthy's supporters in the lead up to the New Hampshire primary
2. RFK didn't enter the race until after President Johnson's defeat in the New Hampshire primary in March 1968. RFK had disavowed his intention to run for the presidency on January 1968. Therefore the focus on RFK would probably have been more of the type of situation we see with Gore's treatment on this board -"let's draft him" or "I hope he enters"

But otherwise this is a hilarious masterpiece:thumbsup: Well done!

Brought back a lot of memories, all paling in comparison to the fact that 1968 was the year I gave birth to my first child. Oh My Gosh--is she about to turn 40??? Yep, guess she is. We kept the newspaper from the day she was born, still have it for her to ponder and be amazed for years to come.

165. I remember the Lounge dustup that year: McLain or Gibson - who's the best?
Denny won 31, but Bob had an ERA of 1.12. Amazing. Bob was the man in the World Series, but the Tigers won 4-3 in a thrilling fall classic, as Mickey Lolich beat the Cardinals three times, including the clincher over Gibson.

Back when baseball was baseball, and if you think the Hillary-Barack feud is ugly on Primaries, you should have seen us get into it on the Lounge with McLain-Gibson.

Ahh, memories. Thanks for the post.

204. The ironic thing, given your "if Kennedy gets the nomination, i'm voting for George Wallace" thread,
Is that, had Bobby lived and received the nomination, a lot of people who ended up voting for Wallace were expected to vote for him. These were people who backed the Wallace campaign not out of die-hard racism(that wing of the campaign was unreachable and basically joined the GOP as a block in '72), but because they saw Wallace as a candidate of working-class outsiders.

Assuming that all Humphrey voters would've stayed with Bobby(which seems likely), and assuming that those Peace Democrats who stayed home out of disgust with events in Chicago would've gone to the polls(which also seems likely given that Bobby was clearly a dove and his nomination would have kept things much calmer in the streets outside the convention)the addition of this wing of Wallace voters would've ensured a solid, possibly a landslide Democratic victory, rather than the Age of Milhouse.
