It's the "We" in "Yes We Can" that inspires me |
|
Because the two Dem candidates are pretty close on policy positions, the primary race has to center on other things. Honestly, if you mildly tweak any of their policy positions, you can easily come up with the other's position. So for me, choosing a candidate came down to things like leadership, inspiration, personality, trustworthiness, and openness.
I watched the speeches, I read the campaign literature, and something really stood out. It's the way Obama welcomes the citizens to be part of the solution to our many problems. The "We" in "Yes We Can" has at its base, that we are all part of the process, and that it can't succeed without our participation. Senator Clinton talks a lot about what she would do as President, and what the government should do when it works for the people. But it sounds like we would just be putting her in charge, and that would be the end of our role in turning our nation around. I want to be part of the solution, not just a bystander. After so many years of government lies and corruption under Bush, why wouldn't any conscientious citizen want to part of the rebirth of our country?

|
Its a key reason I'm drawn to Obama at this point slightly over Hillary

7. Then why doesn't Hillary get the concept? |
|
The voters want to be empowered. They want to be heard. That is part of what's driving people towards Obama.

16. Obama is certainly not just about talk. He talks about open government |
|
and his actions back it up. Ethics reform is a huge night and day issue between the two: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/7/101110/2068/766/451817Also the Obama/Coburn bill which will put earmarks on the internet. Obama also said that healthcare hearings should be on C-SPAN. He is a completely different Democrat than Clinton. Daylight would do this country good.

Come on, care to dispute any of these points that this poster brings out? You know, people can have positions and ideas that are original to themselves but similar to others?

11. Can you at least admit that it works as a campaign strategy? |
|
This is how my governor, Deval Patrick, got elected. His campaign was based on the same concept, only his slogan was "Together We Can". He set up advisory panels with ordinary people, asking what they needed and wanted. The people felt like they mattered, like they made a difference. His campaign rallies were joyful, raucous events, just like Obama's. And it worked. Governor Patrick is now having to work with a recalcitrant legislature in Boston, and the $1.3 billion deficit that Romney left us with. And admittedly, this is interfering with achieving some of the goals he set for his administration. But I still feel like he has our best interests at heart. I feel heard, and that feels good.

9. Makes me want to work harder to help this country |
|
It's been a long time since I felt inspired over a leader and the future of our country. Such a stark contrast to what we've had to endure for 8 long years.
Sure, these may just be words that he is using. But given his platform on the issues, I feel like I really can believe him when he asks for our help to be part of the rebirth of the nation.

And Obama's speeches are about us. I prefer to hear about us, and what we can accomplish in partnership with our government.

14. Ask not what your country can do for you |
|
Obama has really taken that quote to heart. People want to feel like they can make a difference, that ours really is a government of the people. That is a huge part of Obama's appeal.

15. There are HUGE differences between Hillary & Obama which will ultimately affect policy. |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 10:42 AM by beachmom
Obama is for ethics reform and open government. Hillary is not, and her voting record and even her record as First Lady show it. Open government is the first step in giving the people their government back.
That will also make a big difference in what policy actually gets passed. If you're secretive, then the special interests automatically have an upper hand, since they're in the "know", while the people are not.

17. I noticed that. It's never been about him, he's made it about us. |
|
It's like being a team. He's the coach. We're the players.
Hillary talks about her accomplishments and the things she wants to accomplish in the future. She is impressive, I'll not deny that. And I will vote for her if she is our nominee.
But Barack Obama emphasizes what WE as a nation can accomplish together.
The fact that he doesn't think he can do it all like some kind of super poll is exactly why I believe he will make a great president.
It's not about simply being competent, it's about recognizing ability and competence in others. It's about recognizing that America is ready to take charge of our own destiny.
I'm convinced that he will assemble the brightest and wisest cabinet with the highest integrity that ever joined a presidential team. And he's inviting all of us to join the team too.
Changing the status quo takes work and courage. Not everyone wants to accept that.
There are still a lot of people who want to sit back and hand the reigns to a leader and then go back to their lives satisfied that it will all be taken care of. THAT'S A FANTASY. If you believe that you can elect a competent administrator and that will make the country fine, that's delusional.
Hillary wants to jump in and save us. Barack wants us to get off our asses and save ourselves. That message is hitting home. He believes in US. He tells us YES WE CAN.
That's not a bureaucrat or an administrator. That's a leader. A leader who inspires us to be the best we can and to make our country the best it can be.
That's no bullshit. We have to be involved.
Aw, Hell. It's as simple as this:
I believe in Barack Obama because he believes in me.
