Poll question: If Barack Obama wins the nomination will you vote for him?
And why or why not.

Just kind of a pulse check out of curiosity.

108. Couldn't have said it better.
I voted for him in the California primary, but I'm still torn. I still like them both. Either of them would be INFINITELY superior to the "best" the bad guys have to offer, now and countless eons into the future. Our WORST is better than their best.

8. voting for the Democratic nominee
is a must, but after waiting 8 years to return this country back to reality I can't see why a inexperienced candidate is the forerunner. Oh, wait...he is a media creation just as Bush was and now the Democrats can be blamed for the business as usual we will see from Obama. And mark my words...it will happen but we should be used to it by now.

28. Demo5, I agonized over my decision but voted for Senator Clinton yesterday
because I want a tough, experienced wonk in the presidency. That said, I am not worried about Senator Obama because he is smart and he is liberal and he will make a fine president (imho). What I haven't been able to do though, is understand the PASSION of his supporters. I just haven't made that connection with him to get excited. Maybe I'm too cynical, being here in the DC area all these years.....

I will vote for Obama if he gets the nomination, and I will vote for Senator Clinton if she's the nominee. It is imperative that we have a Democratic president after these last 8 years of watching our country go down the toilet thanks to Darth Cheney & Boy George's misadministration.

66. That's the WHOLE point of these daily polls, isn't it?
Administrators know how everyone votes, the rules have ALWAYS stated that posters are required to support the Democratic nominee, so the only point to these daily polls is to demand a mass slaughter as soon as the nominee is chosen. Otherwise, why post them every damn day?

94. I strongly disagree.
One can be a strong Democrat and not be happy with the chosen candidate.

Only if they trash the candidate should they be forced to leave.

It is wicked groupthink to insist that everyone here votes for
the nominee. Why chase away good Dems because they want to
sit this one out? And its early anyway, most will come back
in November. Just trust that and do not be judgmental.

34. In states where Obama is crushing, there are valid reasons to vote for a progressive third-party
I think Obama is going to be our next president, and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that happens. But when I vote in November, he'll likely be ahead in California by double-digits.

IMHO, that's the perfect opportunity to cast a "message vote" for a progressive third-party. If more people in the big, blue states did that, we'd see a lot more progressive ideals coming from the Democrats.

It's true that people from Newcastle (Geordies) are said to speak with a Geordie accent.

But the origin of the name is historical, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geordie

I only know it because I have family and friends living close to Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

You're stupid if you don't vote Democrat in '08...you're just helping McCain, who would be 100x worse than Hillary OR Obama.

101. OMC, there was a thread earlier today that explains why some cannot, in good conscience, vote Obama
And it goes back to the McClurkin fiasco. Some folks here, evidenced from the thread I read this morning, are feeling awfully left out ... we want their votes and their money, but otherwise, we want them to shut the fuck up. At least that's how they feel. And frankly, they'll be thrown under the bus no matter who wins the GE, so from their perspective, what's the point?

As for me, I'll vote against McCain regardless. But I certainly understand how some people around DU feel, and I respect them.

The laws of economics are the laws of self-interest. We lament that the lower-to-middle class Repubs vote against their self-interest consistently.

I'm simply saying I respect the opinions and positions of some who have been taken for granted, or used and then thrown under the bus, for far too long. I understand where they're coming from.

If the rest of us don't, we may be in for a surprise come November. We don't need to alienate any part of our coalition.

110. No
1) I liked Obama long before he decided to run and believe he is a smart man, but as soon as he decided to run for president his message became stars and pixie dust. I read over his website several months ago and I didn't feel he addressed the issues that are important to me, or didn't propose his vision well on those that I find important.

2) The Democrats in general have disenfranchised me this year as a Florida voter, and I'm not too forgiving of people that tax me but don't honor my vote. Tea anyone?

I have an open mind and would be willing to consider him if 1) He pushes to resolve the Florida / Michigan delegate situation soon, and 2) starts to flesh out his issues more thoroughly.

I am not entirely certain I can bring myself to vote for Obama, given some of his positions that I find particularly egregious.

On the other hand, he DOES have a chance of winning me over for the general election, and I genuinely hope that he can, because if he does it means he'll have addressed my concerns.

If not, I'll simply not cast a vote for the presidency, though I will still vote on all other offices and measures that are up on the November 2008 ballot.

Fear tactics are a favored method of fascists, and adherence to a party no matter its actions smell of fascism as well. Generally those who lean to the left feel that you gain support by proposing sound ideas and putting in place policy that inspires people to do good. Your mindset and that of those like you contributes more to a McCain victory then any of the nays on this forum.

It is the responsibility of leadership to lead with good ideas and to inspire action. If people fail to follow, that is the fault of the leader not that of those who do not fall in line blindly out of fear. Trying to stigmatize me with childish name calling while claiming a post count as a credential that you word is somehow more valid then mine is also ridiculous. But with a name like Elrond Hubbard, which bears a striking resemblance to L. Ron Hubbard (Lafayette Ronald Hubbard) the founder of the church of scientology my guess is that you are serving your purpose here.

What is truly priceless are the striking resemblances between your candidate and the bearer of your user name. L. Ron Hubbard was a self-aggrandizing, sociable, charming, charismatic man who had an interest in hypnosis, believed men are his slaves, and was the leader behind a movement that most people see as cult like. I hope a few more then I see past your facade. Priceless indeed. Have a nice day L. Ron..

172. RE: and another moron assumes that i'm a scientologist.
You might want to try reading some time (really it's quite useful). You actually get a chance to comprehend what someone is conveying to you and you might even learn a little bit of vocabulary while your at it. If you actually read what I wrote, I in no way called you a scientologist, or any name for that matter. I made a comparison between the bearer of your user name and the candidate you represent. Both use similar methods to control people. I guess facts and common decency evade your capabilities and you would rather resort to name calling and bullying (typical fascist activities). Have a nice day L. Ron.

140. No, and his recent interview with the Columbus OH paper is why...
It sums it all up for me. The paper interviewed all remaining candidates about their foreign policy, and asked them why they would each be the best candidate to lead the nation amongst other nations.

Hillary listed her experience on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, her already established relationships with the leaders of most of the world's countries, etc.

Barack said he is the ONLY person who can bring the world together because he has a grandmother who lives in poverty in Kenya without running water, and once lived in a Muslim nation.

I am not kidding. That is what he said. The grandiosity and narcissism of this man is beyond belief. (And because of his grandma and having lived in Indonesia, the world will just fall behind him in awe?) A recent, well-constructed, and large-scale study of college students in the US found that 40% now score at the level of narcissistic personality disorder (up from <10% in the 60s). So Obama's time is now.

Obama... please send your grandmother some of your millions. For shame.

Hillary also allied herself with the Latin American elites, which means that as President she will start many a Contra wars in order to reimpose American hegemony over the region.

I don't want as President a woman that confuses strength with brutality!

Not everyone who votes "no" is a troll.

(Full disclosure: I voted "yes" in this poll, but I've
consistently stated that I will not vote for Hillary in
the General Election. And my support for Obama in the
General Election is tepid, at best.)

Some of us are just disappointed that our party seems
to routinely nominate a terrible candidate in persuit
of some mythical "centrist" voter. Obama and Clinton
are probably the worst choices from our original field
of candidates this cycle. Kerry was a terrible choice.
Gore was good, but Lieberman has turned out to be an un-
mitigated disaster. And Bill Clinton wrecked the party.
This would have been the perfect cycle to STRONGLY STATE
the difference between Democrats and Republicans, and to
point out exactly why MOST AMERICANS are better served
by the Democrats than by the Republicans.

So it's a shame none of the folks with real ideas, real
policies, and real Democratic values emerged as our
standard-bearer instead of these two might-as-well-be-
old-style-New-England-Republican "Democrats".

He is not my first choice, but my first choice chose not to run, so I am
left with deciding between others in the primary, but there is no way in the
world I will pick up my marbles and go home if the Democratic nominee is either
Obama or HRC. They both are miles away from McCain, and neither of them will
appoint a Supreme Court Justice anything like the radical-right shams of
Alito and Roberts. McCain says that is exactly what he would do. I want a
Supreme Court that will, upon a challenge, rule the so-called "Patriot" Act as
unconstitutional, not one that would uphold it. The start will be the justice
nominated to succeed John Paul Stevens, who will be something like 88 this year.
He will surely not last another 8 years on the bench. The president inaugurated
next January will be picking one, possibly several new SC justices. Vote Democratic,
and you vote for more like Breyer and Bader-Ginsburg. McCain has already stated flat
out that he wants more like Alito and Roberts. Maybe that doesn't scare you, but not
everyone has a private intercontinental jet fueled and waiting at the nearest airfield
with dual-citizenship documents on board. It scares me.

So yes, I'll vote for Obama if he is nominated. I'll vote for Clinton if she is nominated.
I'll vote for John. P Wintergreen and Alexander Throttlebottom if it comes to that. But
there is no way I'll be voting for McCain unless the Denver convention nominates Tom DeLay.

Not bloody likely.

184. I won't lift a finger to help elect a man who I think is not worthy of the presidency.
I have come to the conclusion that I don't like nor respect Obama.

I don't think that he has earned the right to be our nominee. Where was this guy a little more than 3 years ago? Oh yeah, in the state legislature. I frankly don't give a rat's tail end about any state senator and wouldn't consider one of them fit to be president. I would have voted, and even campaigned, for Obama if he had taken the trouble to actually acquire some experience at the national level before his arrogance won over the wisdom of waiting a few years. I see that he has sweet talked a whole bunch of people into voting for him (mainly the very young, the African-Americans and the upwardly mobile). The true base of the party are still Hillary's voters as will be demonstrated in states like OH, PA & TX. Pretty speeches do NOT solve problems and I prefer Hillary's policy knowhow over empty rhetoric any day of the week.

Therefore, for the first time in my life, this lifelong Democrat is staying home in November and let the chips fall where they may.
