For anyone who thinks that Obama has this thing all but wrapped up
I suggest that you pack your bags, move out of Illusion Park, and take up residence in Reality Acres for the next month or so

...because the Goddess of Peace has not yet begun to fight.

That's not just for the Obama supporters, but it goes for any Hillary supporters, too, who think it's in the bag for Obama.

Don't say I didn't tell you so. :smoke:

Since I work on the computer, I keep getting sucked into checking out DU during the primary.

This whole primary process is fascinating this year. Frustrating in some ways but hopeful in others.

It sure adds some caffine to DU's discussions.

26. this is the most interesting political season since
the summer I worked for a DC (dem) consulting firm that had several senate and house candidates and shared office space with other consultants working on other campaigns. That year the senate flipped dem and took a nice margin rather than the razor thin edge currently held. This is certainly the most interesting presidential primary season that I can remember.

In the late eighties folks kept talking about political pendulums and swings and I kept thinking... when? I didn't realize that folks were talking about much longer eras (rather than an election or two) - I think we are in the beginning of a serious pendulum swing - and have come to view this heinous bush era as the peak of the swing to the right - one striking high enough (on the extreme side) to bring enough momentum not just to swing back to the center but to carry it leftward for quite some time. Unfortunately a pendulum goes through the middle before reaching the left. I think that we will see tepid centrism for awhile until there is recognition that the public itself is pushing the political envelop further to the left. Never thought I would be writing/saying that.

18. she can't pull out a credible victory in total delegates with mere wins there, though
they have to be blowouts on the level of what she's experienced in the last few primaries. Otherwise she goes to the convention with fewer delegates. The math is simple, here. Anything less, and the legitimacy of her candidacy, should she secure the nomination, comes into question.

22. Okay I haven't crunched the numbers
and I have to say the wide variety of totals from news sources is alarming

BUT

all I am saying is that if she can be close come convention time between her and Bill and McAuliffe and Rubin and Emmanuel and Ford etc wringing arms and the party's (convention types) high degree of uncertainty of picking Obama over the known product (race goes in here) Hillary gives her the edge.

Either way there are going to be a lot of broken hearts (and not just on DU) no matter what happens.

25. Yeah, well...I can guarantee one thing...
if she wins the nomination due to backroom politics, arm-twisting of superdelegates, and seating the illegitimate delegates from Florida and Michigan, and not on the basis of a lead in committed delegates from primary contests, she's going to destroy the Democratic party for a decade or longer.

29. No, actually, it wouldn't be
the result would be President McCain.

You'd see a LOT of pissed off people saying things like 'I thought we only had to worry about Republicans stealing elections from us'. And I suspect there'd be a lot of people not voting as a protest against the inherently unfair selection process. Which, you know, is understandable; this is supposed to be the Democratic party, not the Royalist party.

Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 10:53 AM by underpants
I think that what Hillary has run into (not that it explains the entire Obama thing) is a continuation of what we saw in 2006. From the Lamont win in Connecticut (not exactly a bastion of radicals) to the massive smashing of the ingrained rigged (98%) incumbent system in the national election this may all be a cry for change. I haven't heard a single pundit say this but then they were so clueless that they didn't see 2006 coming either (we picked up 3 seats in INDIANA?) because it wasn't polled on. Anyway I am working on it. I think Hillary, who is/was the establishment candidate, ran into something that none of her inside the castle walls political "Experts" saw coming nor did any of the DC cocktail circuit (same thing really).

What's the Brando line--What are you revolting against?
What have you got?

32. Part of it is likely...
a backlash against a perceived (and not entirely incorrectly perceived, either, I don't think) sense of entitlement to the nomination on Clinton's part. She expected it to be over bar the shouting on Super Tuesday, after all. And part of it is probably a general desire for change; Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton? It's seen, rightly or wrongly, as more of the same. Rehashed policies, old ideas. Not a way forward, but a step back. So of course it's a cry for change. And the DNC would be unwise not to heed the call, for the reasons I've given.

47. IIRC Tx has 193 delegates, Ohio about 140.
It looks like HRC would need about 280 out that 340 that is Tx & Ohio. That means HRC needs to win Tx & Ohio by 75% or better, and that looks to be very unlikely.

We may see Obama go into the convention with a 200 to 300 pledged delegate lead.

They are playing up Obama every chance they get and MSNBC is a sorry bunch because they can't even hide their gloating anymore. Then you have the feel sorry for David Schuster crowd who like to poke fun at Chelsey Clinton who BTW has quite a career of her own. I don't feel sorry for Schuster he needs to find a way to cure his habit of running off at the mouth. Experience does count and puppet Obama will be just that to those running the show from behind the curtain. He will not have the experience to run things himself and his buddy buddy advisor's will steer him in the direction they thing more profitable to themselves. Not knowing enough to call a halt to their dirty deeds Obama will follow blindly and defend his actions to the American people on national TV just a GWB has in the past.

42. giuliani 101

Giuliani, whose front-runner status evaporated last month, gave another tutorial on his big-state, late-state plan to win the Republican presidential nomination.

"We were not going to emphasize Iowa in the way that other candidates did," Giuliani said, insisting this was "absolutely no insult to Iowa at all."

Besides, Giuliani said, there'll always be Florida.

Deja vu.

Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 11:03 PM by Spiffarino
I read a piece on Kos the other day that should be read by all Democrats, regardless of which candidate they support. I'll do my best to paraphrase it.

If you're a touchdown ahead, think: It's the 4th quarter and I'm down by two touchdowns.

If you are up by five points in the most recent polls, think: I am 30 points down with no time to spare.

If you are way ahead in the race, think: I am behind and I must run faster.

The way we will win is by wanting it more than the other side. We must work harder; we must be more diligent; we must be more agile; we must demand more of ourselves. And when our poll numbers are perfect, and the press we receive is glowing, and if daisies are growing out of our butts, think: We are doomed unless we work harder and refuse to stop until we've won.

not impossible but not easy.

Already having money issues and will go for 3 weeks without a win.

Also having change over inside her campaign. that won't help.

She now sounds like Rudy, he was skipping smaller states to win in Florida. She is skipping smaller states to win in Texas.

Good luck
