Clinton Intends to Stand Her Ground in Wisconsin's Primary
Feb 13, 2008 11:25 AM

On the Democratic side, the race for president is very much up in the air. In a satellite interview, presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton promised a campaign stop in Green Bay before next Tuesday.

"I'm excited about coming back," she said, "and I don't know the exact schedule but I will be there and intend to see as many people as I can."

"The economy, health care, college affordability, ending the war in Iraq, getting us to an energy plan that makes us independent of foreign oil. I think people want to hear what we're going to do to make all of that happen, and I've got 21st century solutions I want to present to the people of Wisconsin."

"Of course, I think having the first woman president would be a huge change for our country and the world, but I also know I'm being judged on my own merits. I'm proud of the successes of my husband's administration, but we have new challenges and problems and new opportunities."

Despite Barack Obama's recent momentum, Clinton says she remains very optimistic about her chances to win the Democratic nomination. She calls Obama a friend before and after, and expects it to stay a close race.

Clinton also has this to say about critics who feel she would be a polarizing influence as president:

"It's important we have a president who stands her ground. There's some ideas that are just bad ideas. That's why I stood against the Republicans when they tried to privatize Social Security. If they think that's polarizing, I think that's energizing, because we beat them. So I just believe it depends where you stand, and for Democrats, independent voters, and fair- minded Republicans, I have a proven track record of actually making change for people that I want to take to the White House."

"I'll be there snow or not," she said.

5. Chelsea was just there. I think the talk of them abandoning the state was hype
from talking heads who don't have a clue about her campaign.

14. Need to check the money flow, ad buys, etc. to really judge
how they are feeling about WI. Clinton has to shepherd her money more than Obama does right now, so where she's spending the $$ tells all. I don't know where to find that kind of info out.

2. How ironic it will be for her to lose big in WI
That was the state that handed Bill his primary victory over Jerry Brown. It'll be a nice bookend to the Clinton era for Hillary to dash herself on the same big block of cheese.

10. How so? She needs to win the rest of the states by 20 points
If she loses WI, it will be another big nail in the campaign coffin.

4. She's going to get her ass kicked, again
Just like she has in every state since Super Tuesday. What a loser of a candidate. Please dems, get rid of her before ya'll screw up yet another nomination. The GOP is handing the 2008 elections to you, don't fuck it up.

I don't know why you folks even get in the door of our primaries. You obviously don't support our party.

aware that a Dem base can in no way, shape, or form, win a GE. Not even close.

Chelsea stumps for 'mom'
Go ahead — ask Chelsea Clinton anything. She'll probably have the answer. The once and (maybe) future first daughter spoke for nearly an hour today at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on behalf of her mom, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, and mom's campaign for the Democratic nomination. 1:20 pm

* Bill Clinton to be in La Crosse Thursday

17. Whiule the "Rudy Strategy" schtick is merely asinine, I don't think she has much hope in WI
Remind me how many primaries Rudy had won? Remind me how many delegates he had? There is a big difference between deciding to sit out the early states when you have nothing, and focusing your attention on states where you have a better chance to win when you are essentially tied and facing a run of contests where your opponent is likely to romp.

WI is going to be a very tough nut for Clinton. Open primaries favor Obama where he can leverage his support amongst Reps and Indies, and WI's is the most open I can think of - the candidates are on one damn ballot and you don;t even have to decide which party you want to vote. Not only that but WI is a relatively wealthy state with a good ratio of highly eduicated folk, who tend to split his way. The state has a history of liking "new style" candidates too - McCarthy won there IIRC.

She is much better off strategically doing what she needs to to shore up her base and get her volunteers excited there to not get totally whitewashed (I suspect a result much in keeping with MN even though a different mechanism) then concentrating on TX and OH where she can catch up in delegates if she does well. Then PA, much like in the general, may be the swing decider.

24. Was that after she intended not to knock herself out in Wisconsin and move on to Texas?
She probably heard about Obama's full-on ground game in Wisconsin, plus almost all the talking heads on tee-vee declared she was dumb to skip Wisconsin.
