New Hampshire: 2008 Presidential Election

New Hampshire: Obama 49% McCain 36%; Clinton 43% McCain 41%

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

New Hampshire’s biggest claim to fame in Presidential politics is its historic role as host to the first-in-the-nation Primary. However, it’s also become a hotly contested swing state in general elections offering Electoral College votes to the winner.

John Kerry won the state by a single percentage point (50% to 49%) in Election 2004 while George Bush won the state by an equally slim margin (48% to 47%) four years earlier.

In the first statewide general election poll since Arizona Senator John McCain became the GOP’s presumptive nominee, New Hampshire might be very competitive once again in the fall campaign—especially if New York Senator Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee. If Illinois Senator Barack Obama captures the Democratic nomination, he will begin the race in New Hampshire with a lead.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone poll shows Clinton leading McCain 43% to 41% in New Hampshire. At the same time, Obama leads McCain 49% to 36%. National polling, updated daily, currently shows the same general trend with Obama performing better than Clinton in match-ups with McCain.

In New Hampshire, McCain currently trails Clinton by twenty-five points among women and Obama by twenty-six. Among men, McCain leads Clinton by nineteen while holding just a single point advantage over Obama.

McCain wins 78% of Republican votes when matched against Clinton but just 64% against Obama.

Overall, Obama is viewed favorably by 62% of New Hampshire voters. McCain earns positive reviews from 58% and Clinton from 48%.

If its Hillary vs. McCain... McCain wins NH. Obama draws the indies. Hillary does not. Indies are 40 plus percent of our voting bloc.

Colorado: Obama beats McCain, McCain kills Hillary in landslide

UpstateDem's diary :: ::
For those of you who think Hillary Clinton is a stronger candidate against McCain than Obama, this poll should give you serious pause. This is a key state not just in Presidential races, but also in House and Senate races. We have a very good chance of picking off an open Republican Senate seat with Mark Udall. However, with Hillary losing the state this badly, he could be dragged under with her. Obama would likely help him greatly. There is also a competitive House seat in the Fort Collins area, CO-04. It is held by Republican Marilyn Musgrave who barely won in 2006 and Democrats have a good shot of defeating her. Only Obama would help us do that.

I have come to the point where I believe that if we want to win, we have no choice but to nominate Barack Obama. He will help us pick up more Congressional seats all over the country and put states in play that are normally out of reach with his appeal to independents and some Republicans. If we do not nominate Barack Obama this year for the Democratic nomination, we will have thrown away a chance to change the political landscape for years to come.

7. but of course, that means that Obama would have a harder time
with McCain. According to Clintonites :sarcasm:

It's so patently obvious that if the Democratic party wants to run its most "crossover-appeal" candidate, Obama is their guy. But no...somehow, someway...Hillary is the best candidate the Democrats can put up.

11. .
Even if much can happen until the election, these are still interesting results.

Also worth noting was the following line, considering those who say that all the Repubs and Indies who participated in the Dem primary did so to to push the weaker candidate:
"McCain wins 78% of Republican votes when matched against Clinton but just 64% against Obama."
