Obama Camp's Memo on Clintons' Politicizing Race
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 07:10 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
I think the unacceptable tactics from Obama were having MSM run with their strategy is just dirty.

Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign has prepared a detailed memo listing various instances in which it perceived Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign to have deliberately played the race card in the Democratic primary.

The memo, which was obtained by the Huffington Post and has been made public elsewhere, is believed to have been given to an activist and contains mostly excerpts from different media reports. It lists the contact info and name of Obama's South Carolina press secretary, Amaya Smith, and is broken down into five incidents in which either Clinton, her husband Bill, or campaign surrogates made comments that could be interpreted as racially insensitive.

The document provides an indication that, in private, the Obama campaign is seeking to capitalize on the view - and push the narrative - that the Clintons are using race-related issues for political leverage. In public, the Obama campaign has denied that they are trying to propagate such a perception, noting that the document never was sent to the press.

But irrespective of the memo, the image of the Clinton campaign sowing racial discord did bubble to the surface following a series of comments made this past week. On Friday, Bill Clinton called into multiple African American radio shows, including one hosted by Al Sharpton, to tamp down backlash against him for calling Obama's candidacy a "fairy tale."

In the memo, the Obama campaign highlights these "fairy tale" remarks and notes that Donna Brazile, Al Gore's 2000 campaign manager, "lashed into Bill Clinton" for them. The Clinton campaignhas said that the former president was referring to Obama's position on the Iraq. And indeed, Clinton made his remarks in the context of discussing criticism of the war.

"It is wrong that Senator Obama got to go through 15 debates trumpeting his superior judgment and how he had been against the war in every year," said Clinton, "and never got asked one time, not once, 'Well, how could you say, that when you said in 2004 you didn't know how you would have voted on the resolution? You said in 2004 there was no difference between you and George Bush on the war and you took that speech you're now running on off your website in 2004 and there's no difference in your voting record and Hillary's ever since?' Give me a break.

"This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen..."

Other incidents cited in the Obama memo include remarks made by Sen. Clinton, that, in regards to civil rights legislation, "It took a president to get it done"; and comments made by Clinton supporter and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo that, "you can't shuck and jive at a press conference." In the memo, the Obama campaign says Cuomo was referring to the Illinois senator. Cuomo's spokesperson Jeffrey Lerner has argued that Cuomo was "clearly saying that Iowa and New Hampshire were important primaries because the candidates could not duck the tough questions."

3. It seemed like a Dean Scream moment to me.
Hillary was justified in comparing herself to LBJ while Obama was comparing himself to MLK. Her point being that Obama was inspirational, but she was the wonk who could get the legislation done. It's interesting that the media took that out of context. It was a pivotal moment. I want which ever candidate to win based on substance and not manipulation. This incident has left me wondering what's up.

11. Not only that but Obama waited days before coming out to say Clinton's comments were NOT racial and
during those days--the obama surrogates made the stew toxic.

Obama is not leader to me when he allowed this to happen. he knew what was going on.

If so, why wasn't he called on it from the MSM. If your gonna leak a memo like this someone needs to let the public know.

I just heard one of her operatives seemingly BRAG on M$NBC that "there's a brown-black divide in Texas that Obama will not be able to negate in a month." The foregoing is some SICK STUFF that I never thought I'd see a democratic hopeful for the Presidential nomination would sink to. It's smarmy and disgusting.

20. No, HRC's campaign has OVERTLY attempted to spread racial discord beginning with
Bill Clinton doing his "Lee Atwater impersonation" during the run up to the SC primary. They mistakenly thought that it was 1995 instead of 2008.

The HRC operatives are now all over the M$M spewing poison about the huge brown-black divide.

Their efforts are VERY REAL. But why should I complain because they are being uncovered and may just serve to blow up in their race baiting faces. :(

19. "unacceptable tactics from Obama" Completely bogus!
Look at the dates:

Earliest date: DRUG USE (ABC News, 12/12/07)

(Here is a link)

Latest date: SHUCK AND JIVE (Newsday, 1/11/08)

That memo was obviously written after Jan. 11, days after Hillary's MLK comment and a full month after the drug use comment by the Clinton campaign.

The memo was hyped by the Clinton campaign as proof that the Obama campaign is race baiting, but the Clinton campaign has been injecting racially charged comments into the debate for more than a month.

Asked for evidence of the Obama campaign's role in fomenting the controversy, a Clinton aide cited a staff memo, leaked to political blogs, that compiled quotes by Clinton and her allies that seemed racially insensitive.

Firstly, this memo is old news; the public has rendered judgement.

But you intimating that Obama's campaign is wrong for calling out Cuomo for using the term "shuck and jive"???

Seriously.

I don't know what you want but it isn't going to happen. The term "insane in the membrane" seems to keep creeping to the front every time I see one of these desperate posts.

65. collecting and analysing coverage is just part of opposition research...
Obama's campaign put together newspaper clippings of what Clinton's campaign was saying about Obama, and they took notes of coverage and commentary in the press. That what any campaign does.

Thing is, if the Clintons hadn't tried their race ploy, there would have been nothing to document in the first place, would there?

67. Rec. They have been aided by the media at every turn.
I want to point out again Frank Rich's article slamming Hillary's town hall. He used the words ghettoized and servile.

Jesse Jackson Jr. (or IV), one of Obama's point men, brought up images of Katrina to criticize Hillary, as if he was with her and saw her "not care."

It really is nauseating. I don't think they will get away with it in the long run, although with the media trumpeting their every attack, they appear to be profiting now.
