If Hillary isn't the nominee.....
I will write her name in.

Women make up over 50% of the population of this country but having a woman on the ballot...any ballot, is still a novelty. I have decided that for every election I vote for that doesn't have a woman on the ballot I will write one in. No longer will I support the good old boy system that thinks it has the right to tell me what I can and can't do with my body. A system that has to be fought to give attention to female diseases. A system that takes my vote as a woman for granted.

I have fought for women's rights for 30+ years and I still witness sexism and misogyny on a daily basis. I will no longer give my vote to those who perpetuate that system.

And that's my final answer.

98. Sorry to hear that.
One thing that puzzles me: how do you think a Hillary Clinton presidency would affect sexism in American society? Is it policy? My belief is that Clinton and Obama would both pursue pro-woman and pro-black policies because these voters are the cornerstone of the party. McCain would pursue anti-woman and anti-black policies because racists and sexists are the cornerstone of his party. Just a little food for thought...

If not, why make it easier for him to win? Either John McCain or the Democratic Nominee IS going to be President. By not votingfor the Dem, you make it that much easier for the wrong side to win (it will then require fewer votes.) This is going to be a close election, I fear. EVERY single vote counts. Have we forgotten Florida 2000 already?

And why do you care, being in Canada and being able to partake of their most excellent health care, virtually free? We who aren't expatriates, have too fight for our existence and our way of life. This sort of race/gender shit justifies the idiotic racist chauvenists that you rail against.

You're sinking to their level regardless of the injustices that have been done.

Jews have been killed and raped and robbed and spit on and slandered and so on and so on for thousands of years. Does that make it ok for me to go out and do that to someone? Does that make it ok for me to vote McCain if a Jewish Liberal runs against him? ON EDIT for unclearness: Does that make it ok for me to vote for McCain if my Jewish Liberal candidate loses the primary?

Think about it for a minute. You're belittling women and HRC's issues with this petty crap. Sorry but you need to give this some more thought. Sometimes I write things that I regret when I get all fired up as well but I really don't think you've given this much thought.

seems about the same too me.

Plus there are not NEARLY as many people who are voting for Barack because he is a man as are for Hillary because she is a woman.
I'm sure there are both open and closeted sexists voting against Hillary, but it seems to me that there are not nearly so many Obama supporters who openly profess to be voting based on gender as there are Hillary supporters that do. Even if you presume that many Obama supporters are *secretly* voting for him based on gender I doubt the number is as great as those who are overtly voting for Hillary based on gender.

310. I was bored.
But in a general way it's actually becoming a pet peeve of mine—all the so-called Democrats here at DU declaring their undying fealty to a particular candidate, come hell or high water, even if it means throwing the general to McCain. In terms of policy, Obama and Clinton are so close you could barely slide a playing card between them. So it really comes down to a question of personality: who we like better, who speaks our language. I prefer Obama—I don't trust Hillary's DLC triangulating—but where the rubber meets the road, either would ultimately be fine. The squabbliing over personalities is utterly uninteresting; what matters is that we put a Democrat in the WH with a broad-based mandate for change (by change we mean government not sucking at its job anymore).

227. In the past, I've asked my fellow Obama supporters NOT to gloat...
because it's tasteless and looks bad.
I may be an Obama supporter, but I'm not a total asshole.
I'm not in this to make anyone feel bad...I'm in this to see a Democrat in the White House in 2008.
If I get nasty with someone, it's because they got nasty first.

In the end, we're all in this together, more or less.
I'd hope we can all unite behind whoever is our nominee is in November...but I can't twist anyone's arm.
Your choice is yours alone, and it seems you've fought long and hard for your cause.
I can't honestly find fault with you for making that choice now.
I guess maybe my feelings are changing a little...that's the thing about DU...all the time I'm being educated, or being enlightened.

Then we have 7 years of Bill's transactions since he left office. Uranium anyone?

Hillary is the one who isn't vetted.

84. Write her name in for the general election? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.
I can understand voting for Hillary in the primaries - she has some strengths that Obama does not (while he has others that she lacks). I was very close to voting for her myself.

But taking a vote away from Obama in the general election only helps McCain and is an absolutely pointless waste of a vote.

You may as well write in Gloria Steinem or Patty Murray or Maxine Waters or any number of other, truly pioneering women than Hillary, who rode into office on her husband's coattails.

Writing in Hillary's name in the General Election will only set back women's rights by making a McCain victory more likely - he is hostile to choice and has advocated endless war.

How demented to have such devotion to a candidate who is identical on paper to Obama in every way except for the genitalia.

...In order to symbolically vote for a woman?

If McCain wins he will likely get the chance to nominate more conservative Justices to the Supreme Court. Roe vs. Wade hangs by a thread as it is.

Yet, you would chance a reversal of Roe vs. Wade in order to write Hillary's name in?

How exactly does this further the cause for women's rights?

284. Y'know, you bring up an interesting point.
Countless Obama supporters keep telling me that the issue dictating the very quality of my entire life -- LGBT equality -- doesn't matter in the "big picture," and that what I know to be the truth is wrong / stupid / selfish / etc.

Here's the deal: If so many others did not vote for any of the three candidates -- Kucinich, Gravel, or Richardson -- who would have worked to give me first-class citizenship, that's far better evidence than any DU poll (or any endless arguments about McClurkin, Kirbyjon Caldwell, the Newsom snub, etc.) that most Democratic voters either don't recognize the importance of a human-rights issue in their own backyard -- or do, and really, truly don't give a damn.

Now, I ask you: Why should I continue to worry about your right to a safe and legal abortion? I mean, I'm a woman too, but I don't want children, and, as a lesbian, I'm not about to get knocked up through carelessness. Plus, as I am nearing menopause, the possibility that rape could result in an unwanted pregnancy gets more remote every year. As you can see, Roe v. Wade certainly doesn't have any direct impact on my life.

Since I've marched, rallied, written letters, blogged, and voted in support of a woman's right to choose consistently for the past +/- 30 years, yet have never received the same consideration from the majority of my fellow females when it's crunch time and my rights are at stake, why should I care about your right to choose anymore?

Go ahead, convince me I should go on defending your right to choose, when the vast majority of you have never worked to get me my rights in the first place, much less have to defend them.

Maybe...just maybe, if you were to learn that lesson, you wouldn't be stuck in your mom's basement right now and you could be, you know, socialising with a real person!

154. So THIS is the year you refuse to vote for a man.
Every other election for 36 years you've held your nose and voted for a man but THIS year you won't, huh.

It's not like it's the same old same old good old boy opponent. It's a year to break down a barrier for race too. But coincidentally, this year you're just too tired to support one more man. Can't do it. Time to say enough is enough. And yet if it boiled down to two white men again this year somehow I don't think I'd be reading this thread. You'd manage to find it in yourself to support one or the other.

You do what you have to do. Turning your back on the most loyal group of Democrats (blacks) out of bitter spite that YOUR barrier won't be broken isn't very admirable. I'm sorry to see people cheering you on.

There's no reason to dislike Obama as much as you purport too. It's phony. The man hasn't done anything to deserve the contempt he receives here. He sure as HELL hasn't done anything to cause you to refuse to vote for him. No way. Not if you've been pulling the lever for Democrats all these years. Obama's the only one to not deserve your vote, eh? Nah. Not buying it. I'll keep it real FOR you since you're too small to admit it yourself.

Edited on Thu Feb-14-08 12:53 AM by bling bling
However. She started the thread. I'm not out there demanding lockstep, just trying to urge people to vote for Obama and not lose perspective here.

I don't think it's unreasonable, as a Democrat, on a Democratic forum, for Democrats to try to urge other "Democrats" to vote for the Democrat if he's nominated even though he's a man.

And it doesn't take a psychic to see that someone who's willing to vote for Democrats their whole life suddenly, just this year, decides NO MORE MEN, yet the man who HAPPENS to be on the ticket this year is a man representing a minority who could really use all the support he can get. Why is it so galling to you that members of your own party would want your support this year in particular? It's not like he'd be a bad choice regardless of race or gender. He's a great member of our team. Is it really that laughable to you that people want support from members of their own community?

But you and your tag team friend will be in plenty of company in you don't vote. I have a feeling you aren't the only ones who will be staying home fancying yourselves heroes of the women's movement. Because everybody knows voting for phantom candidates is the ticket to gender equality. On behalf of myself and my daughter THANKS for all your hard work on our behalf!!!!! :eyes: However, my mixed race nieces who have had a hell of a lot more race related barriers than gender barriers in their young lives probably don't consider you an ally or a hero at all in their fight. And I wouldn't try for one second to convince them that YOU and Black Velvet are the brave ones in the women's movement. Pffft. Ridiculous.

most Democrats don't think like you. A vote for anyone but the nominee is a vote for McCain, pure and simple. It's a vote for more environment raping, more anti-woman judges, more wars, etc.,etc. If you don't vote for the nominee, you are a fool and extremely selfish. Enjoy "looking yourself in the mirror" when choice is taken away and we are bombing Tehran.

in a landslide, I wouldn't really care. But I feel it's going to be close. And every Dem vote counts! I've got problems with both Hillary AND Obama. But, they're all we got left! I've lost three candidates so far (counting Gore.) But I understand that it's vital to keep the Repubs out of the Oval Office. Therefore, I must vote for the Dem candidate. To not do that, by voting third party or write-in or staying home, makes it easier for the Repub nominee to win. Because of my lack of vote, it would be one less vote he needed to get more than the Dem!

I have had it with all the indignities thrown at her, not only by the media, the republicans and now jerks in our own party. It's sick.

After this election, I am actually contemplating changing my registration to "independent" (I have been a Democrat for many years, and worked on a couple of campaigns); after seeing what kind of trash is being posted about the Clinton's (and even Bill Clinton) is more than just disgusting. The Obama crowd has hit even a new level of "smear" campaigning, they are doing it within the party. Pathetic.

It's one thing to call the other candidate out on the "ropes" but another to drudge them through mud.

This is a forum for DEMOCRATS!!! It shouldn't seem unreasonable to expect support for the duly chosen candidate of the Democratic party from Democrats. And if you can't, why then are you a Democrat? Why are you here on a board for Democrats? We're choosing the President of the United States for crying out loud! Not, the President of Student Council. If you're a Democrat, you vote to support your party. And a write-in, third-party or stay home won't do that. The primaries are the time to vote conscience, not the generals.

She may not be the duly nominated party candidate. Your voting your interests, not the party's. So why are you a member of a party if you just ignore it to vote a pointless whim. The isssues are bigger than your individual need to feel warm and fuzzy. Can't you feel good about helping to keep the Repubs away from the WH?

What if McCain wins? In your state? By a thin margin? Will you still feel good knowing that a few votes could have made a difference?

Do you not understand that if Democrats don't vote for the Democratic candidate, the Republicans win? That's what happens when you don't get enough votes. The other guy wins. Do you want the other guy to win? If you don't, the best way to stop that is to vote with your party, no matter who the candidate is.

But writing in Hillary is like voting "present" on McCain's anti-choice supreme court nominee that will likely tip the balance against Roe.

What She said was:

"I will no longer give my vote to those who perpetuate that system."

And because of that she will write in Hillary

Therefore if its Obama vs. McLame in the general she must think *both* of these individule perpetuate a system of sexism...

294. Due to the treatment of Hillary and her supporters here on this board...
over the past few weeks, I would suggest that writing Hillary in would be the perfect answer.

Those who blindly support the highly defined terms of HOPE and CHANGE and so on, support the guy who hopes to walk on water, and support the guy who plans on a 2nd coming whilst attacking the other leading candidate with the vilest and crudest means possible--will have to suffer the backlash their creation has caused.

Writing Hillary in would not make her the next president, but we can avoid the Obama mistake because thats what he is. If that sends McCain to the office, so be it. You Obamaniacs should have been somewhat more gentle in your attacks over the past three weeks. If enough of the Hillary supporters can write her in, we can defeat YOUR mistake.

I held my nose and voted for Gore. I held my nose and voted for Kerry. Not this time.

David Swanson picked up a bit from a woman high up in the Justice and Peacekeeping arena, one Dr Lisa Schirch who has said:

"...Obama attracts independents, Republicans, evangelicals, and conservative voters..." Nothing said about picking up Liberal Democrats....

Obama is from no particular party, has no particular affiliation, and is depending upon his cult-like network of supporters to sweep him into office. Obama is a candidate who avoids the difficult decisions that might soil his nice suits. Present is not a vote. Present is not a stand. Present is like a check for any amount that is left unsigned.

Yeah, I think I'll join the ladies and others who support them and write in Hillary. Now you Obamaniacs have something real to worry about.

321. but if the shoe were on the other foot surely you'd expect Obama supporters to vote for Hillary?
It seems to me that when some Edwards and Obama supporters began to intimate that they might not vote for Hillary in the general election Hillary supporters took that to heart and decided that they too could play the "take my ball home" game.
The difference being that Obama supporters disagreed with Hillary on the ISSUES and felt that she shouldn't be rewarded for her establishment stances on the IWR, kyle-Leiberman etc. Whereas Hillary supporters seem to be more concerned with vengence against the mean Obama supporters who are doing the "rightful" nominee in.
I have to admit, I was considering voting third party if Hillary were the nominee (I would never vote Republican) but I can find a BETTER candidate than Hillary. Hillary supporters CAN'T find an alternative to their candidate because (despite their protestations and projections) they are not voting on issues they are voting on an individual who they like because of her anatomy.

In many cases they seem to be voting for her IN SPITE of her record on the issues. This is borne out by the fact that they are constantly trying to create equivalence between Obama and Hillary on the issues where she has flaws. It seems that they are tacitly acknowledging her flaws without allowing it to effect their predetermined course of action, which is to vote for Hillary NO MATTER WHAT.

My question is, is there any circumstance under which you would vote for someone who ISN'T Hillary? Even if that happens to be a (gasp!) male candidate?

Oh, yeah? Well, thanks for saying that you'll vigourously support the Dem nominee in the general election if it isn't you, Barack.

And add to that his 'You're likable enough, Hillary' remark made at the NH debate in January. And his wife's saying that she'd have to think about supporting Clinton if she were the nominee.

Just another sign of arrogance and condescension from this man and his wife. Guess who's already measuring the drapes at the White House?

308. BlackVelvet, something you said has stuck with me
"it's time for the young women to start fighting to save
that which WE fought for them to have in the first place."

The hard-fought battles of the 60s and 70s are being thrown under the bus (lord, even the 90s), when women struggled for the freedoms we enjoy today. That young women can have access to birth control, abortion, women's care - that an unmarried woman can walk into a gyn office and ask for the pill - that women have the choice to work or not, marry or not, have children or not - all hard-fought battles. You're right, it is time for the young women who have inherited so much to pick up the battle. If it's so easy, and we're so out of touch and unncessary, then it won't be a difficult transition, I suppose.

And, as you point out, if their candidate is such a phenomenon, then there's no problem. They'll get their landslide with the help of Republicans and independents, I imagine. They don't need to push you into voting against your conscience, because they've got the rock star, or so I gather.

In any case, you brought up a thought-provoking point, and I had a long conversation with a friend about it last night. We will see how these issues are fought for.

the treatment of Hillary by the Obama team over the past few weeks means that votes will be withheld from Obama. Hillary, if not the nominee will be written in.

is sexist. It is not. Hillary is a candidate. Obama is a candidate. Bottom line is that Hillary, of the two, is the better candidate.

Shame that so many can not allow a woman to become president.

Pity that so many felt that deranged attacks against Hillary and her supporters was the only way to go. Your Mamas didn't raise some of you right.

that's assuming all man will perpetuate sexism and misogyny, and all women will great leaders.

That's the same type of bubble-gum feminism that turns off a lot of progressive men.

You are, a priori, discounting all men as candidates...solely on the basis of their being men. That's just as bad.
