** Hillary Clinton Appreciation Thread **
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 11:40 PM by jlake
I wanted to take a moment, and use of my valuable posts to give a shout out to Hillary.
Things are pretty tough right now - and I can't imagine the strength of character that she has to
keep going.... I could never do it....ever. Her accomplishments are remarkable - and I know that whatever her future will be - she will not disappoint.

Regardless of what happens in this campaign, Hillary Clinton is a great Democrat and has proven herself
to be worthy of my support.

She is not a "DINO" or "Bush Lite". If she was those things, the RW and Freepers wouldn't passionately hate her.
Their hatred is directed at her because they fear her and know she represents the anathema to their vision for the country.

Some think she is not a good candidate because the RW hates her - Their hate towards Hillary clues me in that Hillary must
be a damn good woman.

And I would like to add that Hillary is the first and only candidate that I will feel PERSONALLY sorry for if she does not win.
I was sad in 2000. I was sad in 2004. I was sad when Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, and John Edwards dropped out - sad for our loss -
But I will feel personally sorry for Hillary Clinton. No one is owed the presidency, but she has certainly earned it - and we all deserve it.

Thank you Hillary!

9. No.
She hasn't earned the Presidency, anymore than the other candidates have earned it. 7 years of legislative experience isn't that much.

If we want to get into a discussion of who's "earned" the presidency, we might as well forgo the GE and just move McCain in the white house right now. Because if anyone has earned it, he has.

99. Not saying that I like McCain.
Just that the rationale for nominating Hillary in the primaries, when taken to its logical conclusion, is also an argument for supporting McCain against Hillary in the GE. That's the problem with the experience argument, imo.

21. Without bringing Obama into this - that is unfortunately not true.
Think of Bush V McCain in 2000.
Winning the primary is not really any gauge of having earned the right to be presidency in the true meaning - in outright political tactics - yes.

29. Bringing that up makes me think of something...
how the hell did McCain sell his soul to Bush after what Bush did to him in 2000?
I always wondered if maybe he was promised to be annointed after Bush was done if he shut up and basically played along.
...and barring any dirty tricks or backroom deals, I think that if Obama or Hillary seal up the nomination, I believe that either of them will have earned it after a well-fought battle.

185. I don't agree.
She's done nothing to "earn" the presidency. I can't really think of too many people who have, with the exception of Al Gore. I think all things considered, whoever wins the primary has earned the presidency.

That being said, I give her credit for keeping up the fight.

I wouldn't have posted in this thread at all, had you not posted what you did, which is, of course, bringing Obama into it.

195. Sorry, but you're dead wrong.
The process by which we select presidents is, thusly: Win the popular support of the citizenry and the delegates in the caucus and primary, earn the right to the General Election. You don't get to cherry-pick your personal criteria and force-feed them to all others as the only applicable standard. But, that seems to be the popular theory among Clinton backers, especially since the momentum has shifted so drastically since Super Tuesday.

But thanks for bringing Obama into it, anyway.

238. Not even in the pure political sense, no, he didn't.
In 2000, he was illigitimately appointed by a partisan Supreme Court after he and his cabal engaged in illegal acts such as caging, voter roll scrubbing, voter intimidation, jamming, halting a recount and more. In 2004, he was illigitimately "re-elected" after doing much or all of the same, plus vote-hacking.

For you to intimate that there is some similarity here is insulting to anyone's intelligence. But, it does go right back to underscore what I said earlier about a disturbing trend among Hillary Clinton supporters.

22. Hillary is the strongest woman I've ever "known".
If you listened to her biography you would be astounded how she has the perfect background and experience to be our president. She was born and trained for the job. It is astounding that she is still standing after all the Right wing and far left wing have attacked her. No woman in this mans world could remain holding her head high could have with stood the venom thrown against her...unless she was extremely well balanced and strong. She has always been liberal and fought for liberal and black causes for 30 + years. I can't understand the sh** thrown at her...a fellow Democrat.

Three cheers to Hillary. You go girl!

... she would be so far ahead of everyone else in the field, there would be no contest. People would look at all the other candidates and scoff at their professed qualifications.

Anyone who doesn't believe me hasn't paid attention the last 14 F'ing years to the villification of Hillary by the so-called liberal media, or actually has the audacity to think she deserves it. No one deserves to be pilloried like that for the simple offense of being a strong woman married to a man who compromised his morals.

108. That's what get me about the past/future moving on past partisan bickering
rhetoric of Obama. It is an insult to every democrat who survived the onslaught of the republican revolution. Now he wants to make nice with them while putting down the liberals who fought that. No one took more direct fire than Hillary. And she was right when she pointed out things like the vast right wing conspiracy. I would like Obama more if he hadn't been so arrogant about throwing his liberal elders under the bus. Hillary deserves credit for having survived the VRWC nightmare.

Chelsea Clinton talks about education
Former first daughter stumps for mom at UW-EC
By Brad Bryan
Leader-Telegram staff

…….Arriving just a week before Wisconsin's primary, Clinton covered a range of political issues, citing Hillary Clinton campaign talking-points effortlessly and without using notes.

Wisconsin's first female lieutenant governor, Barbara Lawton, accompanied Clinton.

Chelsea Clinton spoke at length about Hillary Clinton's plans to end the war in Iraq, end the unfunded mandates of federal No Child Left Behind legislation, establish a universal heath care system and reform the student-aid system.

"Students are more likely to repay loans when they can afford them," she said.

…………

She said that her mother wants to double the maximum amount of Pell grants a student can receive, to increase tax credits to $3,500 per student each year, expand AmeriCorps and streamline the process for applying for financial aid and increase federal lending.

………………

Clinton said that if elected her mother would end No Child Left Behind.

One student, who stated her family worked in the health care industry, expressed concern that Clinton's universal health care plan would put her family out of business.

"One of the things that she learned in '93 and '94 is that a lot of people are happy with their health care," Chelsea Clinton said.

She said that under her mother's proposed plan, those who are satisfied with their health care can keep it.

Those who aren't happy with their health care, or those who can't afford it, could buy into the plan……..
Premium payments would be capped at less than 3 percent of disposable income, Clinton said.

"Everyone would be covered and that's important because the larger the pools are, the less expensive it would be for each of us individually," she said.

Clinton was obliged to defend her mother as a former Goldwater Republican and responded to questions about the succession of Clinton and Bush presidents.

"I would hope that you vote for my mom on her own merits," Clinton said. "I don't think anyone should vote for or against her because of my father."
……………

Clinton was asked what her mother would do to reign in mercenary guards in Iraq.

"One, she'll end the war in Iraq," Clinton said. "And, two, get back to the Constitution and ensuring that everyone is held to the same standard. And, also get back to the old fashioned idea of habeas corpus, which is also why she's advocated shutting down Guantanamo for years and setting up a transparent legal system for inmates there."

61. Good call!
This is not my first post, but I also have a lot of respect for Hillary.

There has been a lot of back-and-forth here on DU these past couple of months.

It hurts me when people pretent that Hillary is "just as bad as the Republicans".

While I hate the Iraq War, I can understand why some Senators voted to authorize it.

Not only Hillary. Also John Edwards, John Kerry, Chuck Hagel and many others.

They sincerely believed that it was necessary to put pressure on Saddam Hussein.

They hoped that Bush and Blair were telling the truth about wanting to avoid war.

Looking back we can say their vote was a mistake, but hindsight is 20-20.

Whoever wins the nomination, I hope we will all support the Democratic ticket.

I have been a reader here since about 2003...gearing up for those 2004 elections. It took all the lack of Hillary support from fellow dems for me to finally register and speak up. I understand if people support another primary candidate, but I am too proud of Hillary to stay quiet any longer. She is not perfect, but neither is any other candidate!

59. Hillary Is The Best Man For The Job
She is one of the strongest and most tenacious individuals on this planet, and the sum of her life experiences have prepared her for the most challenging job in the world. She has a pragmatic and analytical personality, an absolute loyalty to her commitments, and not one remaining iota of fear for the Republican smear patrol.

The same bastards (not all of them Republicans) who vilified her for standing next to her husband have vilified her for going the course through thick and thin in this election. Those who mock her for stalwart lack of emotion also mock her for tears. They will never attribute a positive, desirable trait or motivation to anything she does-there will always be hints of ulterior agendas.

Hillary is not a rock star. She is a rock. And that's why I want her to be President.

She's who I want to be working for us from within and protecting us against threats from without. She's the one I can trust to actually BE working once the job is handed off to her, rather than basking in the idolatry of rekindling people's memories of a long-dead hero.

Hillary was not my first choice. She is not my ideal choice. But she is the better choice, and exactly who we need for the next four years while we recover our Nation.

60. White male Obama supporter here...
... I appreciate all Hillary Clinton has done in the face of extreme hostility -- both personally and publicly. I appreciate her strength and will. I appreciate what she symbolizes to women, I appreciate that she hammers at the glass ceiling and shatters it.

I appreciate all these things. She's still not my candidate, and did not get my vote in the IL primary. I do not like her politics therefore she is was not my choice. If Hillary Clinton the nominee, then I'll vote for her if she is the nominee because the alternative (McCain) is a poorer choice than her.

Good luck Hillary Clinton, you have a hard mountain to climb.

Edited on Thu Feb-14-08 09:50 AM by Ivote
First They Came for the Jews

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

You know the phrase, "if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all". Rationale posters believe this.....quit trying to even engage with these ill ones. It only gets your blood pressure up.

To the OP: I appreciate her as well and really truly believe she is pragmatic enough to do our country a lot of good. She has specific plans, not just rhetoric or an economic policy that is copied from her opponent's.

96. Thank you?
Excuse me but what really has she done to deserve thanks? You seem to think because the "right-wing" hates her more than anyone else, that is sufficient reason to vote for her. Not much of a reason if you ask me.

If anything, it raises questions again about her and her husband and their agenda which in many ways appears is connected into the agenda of the people you say hate her more than anyone else. And how many photos do we have of the Clintons with the Bushes?

Right-wing, left-wing, this wing, that wing. The hand is quicker than the eye. Particularly with the Clintons. They seem to be part of the "neo-cons" except instead of "neo-conservative" the Clintons seem to be more "neo-con artists."

You will cry if she loses. Quite a few of us will cry if she wins.

I have yet to see what her accomplishments really are that would indicate she has earned the right to be president. Her record, the real one, seems to indicate she has served the private interest far more than the public interest. As has her husband.

Hillary Clinton keeps talking about how brutal the Republicans will be in the general election. And she is married to their number one target.

If Barack Obama wins, they at least don't have Bill Clinton to use as ammunition.

It's not over by a long shot. Hillary has already schooled the corporate press - they are afraid to get too cocky again. If she loses, though, it won't be because Obama beat her - it'll be because the full force of the corporate media was brought to bear against her. As it will be brought against whoever is the Democratic nominee.

Let's hope we learn fast who we need to stop listening to.

(CNN) — As part of the Clinton campaign's declared effort to fight for every delegate in every state, Chelsea Clinton is heading to Hawaii, Barack Obama's home turf, according to a Clinton campaign source. She'll spend three days, including this weekend, campaigning in Oahu and Honolulu.

……A campaign source says they are not focused only on Texas and Ohio.

On conference call Wednesday, Clinton staffer Guy Cecil said the campaign would now be hiring staffers and opening field offices in several states with upcoming contests they had not devoted resources to before, including Montana and Wyoming.

Hillary Clinton has been endorsed by Sen. Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii, and will be doing satellite interviews with Hawaiian TV today.

This telephone survey of 855 Likely Democratic Primary Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports February 13, 2008. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

The Democratic Presidential Primary in Wisconsin may be the most competitive contest between Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton since Super Tuesday.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows Obama with a narrow four-point advantage over Clinton, 47% to 43%. Nearly one-fourth of the voters say there’s a good chance they might change their mind. Five percent (5%) of those who currently support Obama and Clinton say there’s a good chance they could change their mind before voting.

Clinton leads by ten points among women but trails by twenty-three points among men. Clinton leads among voters over 65 while Obama has the edge among younger voters.

A strong showing by Clinton would be a welcome dose of good news for her campaign. …

…..Though the questions covered a wide array of topics, from global overpopulation; Native American rights and health care, the war in Iraq; education and the economy were key policy initiatives Clinton came back to.

Clinton, who never referred to her parents by their names, but rather mom and dad, spoke fluently about her mother's platform, and only couldn't answer one of the roughly two-dozen questions.

…..
Clinton also touted that her mother would end the war in Iraq by bringing the troops home, stabilizing the country as troops are withdrawn and by having a strong diplomatic presence in the Middle East that will help with the rebuilding of Iraq as well as improve relations with other Middle Eastern states. Along with bringing troops home, she said Sen. Clinton would end no-bid contracts, such as that of mercenary groups such as Blackwater, which she said would cost less and improve security in the region, along with ending torture techniques, such as the recent controversial method of waterboarding allegedly used by Central Intelligence Agency investigators on suspected terrorists.

She also said that a part of ending the war in Iraq is improving care for veterans when they return home, including making sure they are compensated and receive the bonuses promised to them when they signed on to serve.

Fiscal responsibility was another reoccurring theme in the hour-long question-and-answer session, with Clinton saying that her mother is the most fiscally responsible candidate among those running for a presidential nomination from both parties, adding that she has a plan to pay for everything.

The former first daughter also said her mother's record on the economy, along with being fiscally responsible, would foster a stronger economy as well as make her the strongest candidate against Republican front-runner Sen. John McCain in the November general election, should the pair get the nominations.

"My mom has the strongest candidacy and she will win in November against McCain," she said.

Other topics Clinton hit were governmental universal health care, greening all federal buildings and investing in renewable energy sources to combat global warming, improving national security by keeping the Patriot Act and ending Bush's No Child Left Behind plan for education.

125. A big K and R for this...
A friend emailed me and asked who I was voting for in the Primary and why.

I said HRC...first and foremost because she will be good for women and children and reverse all of the horrid policies that women-hating W has instituted such as the International Gag Rule that has resulted in deaths. Many of W's policies against women are never publicized...I found the National Women's Law Center in '04 when campaigning for Kerry and I was stunned at what W had done...very quietly, but very completely. One of the latest women-hating policies by W and the neocons was to tell the Bureau of Labor Statistics to stop using Women as a category for workers. W wants us to be uncounted...invisible.

No matter how you feel about HRC personally...she has been a tireless fighter for women and children. I think most everyone would like to see their mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, girlfriends treated fairly and given every opportunity to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

After all, women and children are the MAJORITY here in the U.S....and the world. It has been said that the 21st Century will be when the degradation and oppression of women will be challenged and overcome. I'm starting with voting for HRC for U.S. President.

And I fell very sorry for males who are threatened by that.

145. HILLARY HAS INSULTED MILLIONS OF DEMOCRATS !!!
I'm from Maine, and we had the largest caucus turnout in our state's history. Hillary campaigned hard here, and yet Obama beat her hands down, FAIR AND SQUARE !! And then when she was asked about this and the rest of her many recent losses, she can't be honest and graceful in defeat and simply admit that Obama out-campaigned her. She has to take the crappy low road and say that she lost the caucus states "because only the activists voted and they aren't representative," or "mostly African Americans voted and they all support Obama,"... What crap ! At my caucus for Obama there were people voting for him old and young, male and female. In Virginia he beat her across almost EVERY democraphic. How INSULTING she has been. I am working like crazy to nominate Obama. And while I still think Hillary is a bright and experienced candidate who I would support if she were nominated, I would do so holding my nose. She has lost TONS of respect. She wasn't saying this crap when she narrowly won the Nevada caucus. Obama doesn't say she won in Nevada "just because the Latinos voted for her." And by the way, Obama outpolls Hillary bigtime in the general election matchups. The Republicans are HOPING and PRAYING she is nominated because she will galvanize their party bigtime. Half the country doesn't like her, and would be foolish to nominate her. Obama doesn MUCH better among Independents and even some R's. The numbers are indisputable reality. GO OBAMA !!!!

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- New Mexico's Democratic party chairman announces Thursday that Hillary Rodham Clinton won the state's Democratic caucus.

A marathon vote-count that went on for nine days after the Feb. 5 election ultimately added one more delegate to her total. That gives Clinton 14 delegates from New Mexico to 12 for her rival Sen. Barack Obama.

149. I've made up my mind. If Hillary doesn't win this
nomination and become President, I'm finished forever with politics. I listen to it as my nephew said...24/7....well, not quite. I'll be 67 in a couple of weeks. I want to live long enough to see a woman govern this great nation of ours. And she's the one to do it, IMHO. This might be my last chance to see this. If she doesn't win, it's no more watching or reading about what is going on. I'm SICK of it all. I love my country, but I no longer think it is worth my getting stressed out about who's running the show in D.C. It's taking a toll on my mental and physcial health. I'll be like my "don't give a shit about politics" friend. She's much happier being ignorant of everything that has to do with politics. I only hope I can keep my word to myself.

Hillary Clinton "has the only health care plan that covers every American."
Congressional Quarterly and the St Petersburg Times have investigated this claim, and have ruled it "True"

Obama has said he wants to cover every American, but experts say it's unlikely he will without a mandate as part of his plan. Earlier in the campaign, Obama said his plan did provide universal coverage, but we found that claim Barely True; read our ruling here.

Because Clinton does include a mandate in her plan, she is correct in saying that she is the only candidate for president with a plan that mandates health care for all Americans. We find her statement True.

...I feel that Hillary's campaign as a personal journey and challenge as well. I have come to admire her the more I read about her and listen to her, and I can't wait to see her in action at last, in the Oval Office. I will definitely, gloriously celebrate that wonderful day when it comes! (And I have kin and friends who will do the same.)

Hillary '08!

Thanks so much for posting this. Such a refreshingly positive post amid the dominant rancour here.

164. Universal Healthcare. It's still a solid LIBERAL idea. Real liberals and progressives
support it!

And how about choice? How far do you have to dig through Obama's website to find his stance on choice? Anybody tried that? I have. Compare to Hillary's website. BUT, he does have a big pretty blue splash about faith. Choice? Not so much. It's on like page 56 or so of a book you have to download to get to.

191. Hillary as revenge
Hillary was not my first choice, Edwards was. But I give Hillary a lot of credit. She has taken more abuse, virtually all of it gratuitous, than all the other candidates combined. Even her competence and professionalism are held against her. The blind hatred that has attached itself to Hillary makes her a problematic candidate for the Democrats. We live in a country of inattentive (to issues), pablum-swilling voters who vote their bumper stickers.

I think much of Obama's momentum is attributable to Democrats believing that Hillary has been compromised through no fault of her own. The flesh-and-blood candidate has been replaced by the media-spawned rat-the-size-of-a-dog-hiding-in-the-sewers urban legend. She deserves much better. In the real world, I think that Obama stands a better chance of being elected. I will gladly work for either one.

It would be particularly gratifying to me, however, if Hillary did get nominated and elected. It would be like rubbing FECES in the face of all the smug dittoheads, the sanctimonious right-wing media whores, and the slack-jawed, flag-waving retards who voted for GWB twice and still can't figure out what's wrong with this country.

Oddly enough, I'll be right there with you on that one. She's invested so much of her emotional energy into this campaign - I don't get the sense that she's held anything back.

Hillary isn't my first, second or even my third choice for President, but she has earned respect and appreciation from her constituents in New York and from her party, to which (in my view at least) she has been a very loyal and strong asset.

213. The Clintons
are still getting smeared in the media, but her campaign advisers are running a 1990s campaign and haven't grasped the new approach to winning elections. Triangulation only works when Bill Clinton is selling it. Hillary is good, but Bill is the only one who could succeed with that strategy. Her calculated vote for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment might get some Republicans to vote for her, but it turned off more Democrats, and we are in the primary phase. Strategic errors like this have cost her more than her advisers calculated.

Playing InTrade with election prospects? Considering the constant state of flux in results, very risky, too, and I find that really a cynical way to earn bucks.
