Regardless of how the rumors of his being a Muslim got started,
it would be prudent of Obama to start educating (or re-educating) folks about his religion.

19. in all honesty,
there's no way, posting here on DU about this is "spreading rumors".. we all heard of this before this post.

When I've talked to many "working class people", they need to hear this disclaimer from him, over and over again. They heard the rumor from the corporate media. They haven't heard it debunked nearly as often from the media. It would be prudent of him to get this all over the airwaves. He just said himself, the working class are too busy to dive into politics.. did he not? There's a new thread up here on this in the past five minutes.

8. I had a friend who's never voted Republican tell me last night
he'll vote for McCain before a Muslim. Granted, he's no rocket scientist, and I tried to explain he was Christian, but he's gotten the same e-mails that we've all gotten, and deleted. He just accepted it as truth. I'm just saying it wouldn't be a bad idea to broach the subject regularly, not make a big deal, just blend it into his national presence.

He's considering voting for Obama in November.

I think some are seriously overestimating the impact of such silly rumors on voters in the real world right now.

And seriously underestimating the power with which Obama's message of true change and a shift away from divisiveness is resonating with voters of all ages, races, genders and even political persuasions.

32. my posing and posturing, as you put it, was to express a concern in a forum
that I'd thought could throw out some sensible discourse. i really don't care which candidate wins the primary, and i realize I'm certainly in the minority. I care a great deal about OUR candidate winning the general, however, and I don't want to lose a vote because of a misconception that could possibly be straightened out. I don't get to listen to ed shultz, but I think what I'm trying to say is what he's saying.

41. That would have been better. What do you suggest?
I suggest that we stop mentioning that "some people" still think that Obama is a Muslim. Instead, we can mention that he's a Christian as often as possible. If everyone does that, it ought to do the trick.

We could also loudly insist that the media stop telling lies about Democratic candidates. The last time Hillary did that, a lot of Obama supporters criticized her. I still can't figure that one out...

43. thanks for your support
here's how I see it, and I'm probably among the oldest on this forum. Hillary's been called everything for 20 years or so, so the "comical" thread started elsewhere isn't relevant to what I'm talking about. Obama is a relative newcomer, someone who's still introducing himself, so to speak. the post about his middle name being used against him, joking as they were, will absolutly come to pass, if he's the nominee which is pretty much a done deal IMO. The Republicans smeared their own in south carolina in 2000 to put Bush to the top, do we actually think they'll do any less to our candidate this year?

13. Thank you for your concern. Obama has stated his religion numerous times.
Obama attends a Protestant Christian church. He is a Christian. He has said so every time he was asked. Anyone who wants to can visit his church's website or visit the church itself and talk with the other parishioners.

Regardless of how false and malicious rumors get started, it behooves every Democrat to correct the record and refrain from perpetuating the lies and then somehow shifting the blame to the victim.

Obama has done everything he can to communicate his religion, clearly and consistently.

26. I think the poster is just trying to say
he's seeing that people aren't getting the message as much as they heard the bs that Obama is a muslim.

Obama just stated himself that working class people don't have the time to dig into politics (paraphrasing).. and that holds a lot of truth to it. Your suggestion is that they start looking up church websites? That's doesn't jive with what Obama just said. People aren't looking into politics.

The rumor started over the airwaves, repeatedly in the beginning, and I don't believe for a minute that they straightened out this rumor over the airwaves with equal time. Apparently, since I've seen many posts claim ppl still believe this, both the OP and Obama are right and they have something to do with the damn media spreading lies as usual and not straightening them out appropriately.

22. let me explain, and please don't question my honesty.
I'm a Democrat, I early voted in Tennessee for Hillary, but that was a coin toss. I just want a Democrat back in office. I appreciate everyone's passion for their candidate, and after the convention I'll be just as passionate for the winner. But right now I don't think we need Democrats making up their minds before the primary seasons over because of a misconception , regardless of how the information was misconstrued. I'm just saying there have to be some good speechwriters in his campaign who can make some subtle references in a broader sense that would appeal to conservative Southern Democrats, because we need every vote we can get. I'm still not sure how my concern is dishonest.
