http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=4521730&mesg_id=4521730">Prognosticating the Potomac Primary: Stick a Spork in Her, She's Done, I said this past Sunday.

After http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=7468936&mesg_id=7468936">55 hours awake, then 5 hours asleep, then 4 hours awake, then 9 hours asleep, and 2 mostly inadequate cups of coffee so far this morning, I'm now looking forward to the "director's cut" of the Potomac Primary: some will call it the Beltway echo chamber effect (i.e., the DC-based Sunday talk show pundits giving overweighted importance to their own Beltway backyard races this coming Sunday, as they try to discern the "deeper meaning" of this week's rout).

But the fact of the matter is, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=7468936&mesg_id=7469077">the domestic and foreign press convergence seen here in the vicinity of the nation's capital this week, coupled with the hardly-noticed arrival of operatives who otherwise would've been very much noticed, really did create a very unique and special opportunity to efficiently and effectively share data, and will, in fact, ensure that the Potomac Primary's primary shock wave lasts at least until a week from this Sunday. It doesn't matter that the "principal players" have now moved on from here; in fact, that's the added bonus (it all took place right under their noses, and the convergence event is now over, so it's too late for the principals to try to do anything about it).

Yes, I'm guessing that the Potomac Primary's primary shock wave will last for at least two Sunday talk show cycles, and I'm betting some of my chips on three, which gives me better odds, and more than covers my lost chips on two, if I'm right.

Why?

1. When a large data dump about a complex campaign-related story cluster is given to investigative journalists, the fact-checking takes time. But when multiple outlets all know that others have it, too, the scramble to complete that process is anything but a slow motion affair. So while there's incentive to paddle carefully through the data stream, there's also incentive to break a sweat.

2. However, looking at the primary calendar right now, the media can see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapids">a short, restful, breath-catching run ahead before the next set of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_democratic_primaries#February">whitewaters on March 4th. Yes, I know that Hawaii and Wisconsin occur before then. But Mark Penn's own publicly-stated "strategery" is to hold forth his divining rod and miraculously part the waters on March 4th. So, the investigative journalists have *some* time to play with here, and experienced rafters know to conserve their energy to maximize their fellows' enjoyment of the choppiest waters.

Just between you and me, though, Mark Penn is up the proverbial creek without a crash helmet or a paddle (or even a real palantir, which might at least be good for forecasting where his raft finally washes up, if he could manage to hold it still long enough to give it a really good gaze).

But I've got the video to show that I hang better than most bigger boys.* When you grow up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_River_%28Kanawha_River%29">the New River, navigating cold, frigid, unforgiving whitewaters becomes second nature.**

Time for me to http://www.class-vi.com/">go book a last-minute March trip on the New River with Class VI River Runners, to ride the roller coaster that is the New River (a misnamed misnomer, if ever there were one, geologically speaking). March is when the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_whitewater_rivers">whitewatering will be at its best, and the soft touristy types are scarcely to be found. No, I doubt Mark Penn can hang with me in any March whitewatering rafts, and I don't think my crash helmet would fit him, either.

Best to all, even to those of you lazy louts who slept regularly the last three days,

- Dave

* Does anyone have a recommendation on how to: (1) take a VHS tape with broken "lip" (broken during our last move) and (2) convert its contents to DVD, so that (3) posterity can see the hilarious, "caught-on-tape-by-the-outfitter's videographer/kayaker" antics of my lummox of a partner falling out of the raft his first trip down the New River?

** For a REALLY challenging ride, do the nearby http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauley_river">Gauley River. In springtime, there are rapids that are simply marked "unclassified," since they're "off the Richter," so to speak. Be sure to note the nearby http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summersville_Dam">Summersville Dam, which became a bit of a poser for the Army Corps of Engineers, naming-wise. By tradition, the first choice of naming a dam is the nearest post office. That would be Gad, West Virginia, named after the Biblical references. Gad Dam. Um, no. Not in 1966, when the damn dam was completed, anyway. The next choice is usually the river being harnessed. The Gauley River. Gauley Dam. They *almost* went with it. But the higher-ups in DC vetoed it. Spoil sports. The next closest post office (not really that close, actually), is Summersville. Hence, the misnomer.

My mom loves cooking for friends I bring home to take whitewater rafting, and the cost of her B&B is "just right," which is to say: buy the groceries, and enjoy the meals she prepares, pre-and-post river.

4. Redneck Surfing! Surf's up, too!!!
I'm not kidding. My mom loves it when I introduce newbies to the area, and trust me: the price of the groceries is well worth it, given the alchemy she works on them.

The biscuits 'n gravy before the trip (not to mention all the stuff that comes with it) will fortify you for the run.

The chicken 'n dumplins after the trip will heal all hurts.

And the beds and pillows are just right.

Seriously. Name the time. Even though you're not a newbie, I'll take any excuse I can get to get back there in springtime.

5. Not a newbie ... older than dirt
As long as my geritol is near to hand ... :)

Haven't been in the water in years. Definitely have to hit the weights and tune up a bit before making the trip ... but that would be so much fun. Never got very good with kayaks (keep winding up upside down) but handle a canoe quite well. Or used to, anyway. And the feedin' arrangements sound great. I would really like to make this trip.

9. In March, a little extra weight means more insulation.
But yeah, a little added tone underneath can minimize that awesome ache afterwards.

Let's do it!

Plenty o' pics will be uploaded, I promise. But I still want some advice on how to transfer the tape to DVD. The magnetic tape itself was not damaged. Only the lip of the VHS tape casing was broken.

11. Hey, David, Happy Valentines Day!
I KNOW there's a way to fix the tape, I just don't know what it is. Tape? Possibly gently taking apart another tape and replacing it with that one? We have a DVD recorder, and I have no clue how to use it, but my husband could do it if you get the VHS fixed.

Really, I think you should start another thread about just that one thing, only make it an interesting title, so it gets some attention - people on here know stuff - but they'd have to see your question to answer it!

PS: Interesting title : "Hillary's NEVER BEFORE SEEN video tape - MUST see"

Check out what Obama DID on this SECRET video tape...

"MUST SEE VIDEO - HILLARY & OBAMA FIST FIGHT"

Or, well, something like that!

Wish Batman a late Happy V-Day for me, too!

Yup, I know there's got to be a way to retrieve the video, since the tape itself is still neatly spooled in the casing, with only the flip-lip broken off.

I'll be sure to let the caped wombat know you said hello. If I were a betting man, I'd say he'll be around late in the weekend and into next week.

15. Hey, it's not a bad place to be - Canada .
It's just such a nice, peaceful country! And a 20 minute drive...

I have DirectTV in my "bolthole" , and warm, warm slippers!

My daughter also voted in her very first primary in NYC - for Obama - I credit her boyfriend, otherwise she probably wouldn't have been interested. She said there's a huge amount of support in the area she lives in - near Williamsburg, and very little for Hillary. Of course my son was out canvassing for Huckabee...so, he didn't vote. Well, he SAID he was out canvassing for Huckabee, but he lied!

Oh, and he FINALLY got a job - but has to take a drug test, and there's a little, tiny problem with that, but I think he'll do ok, the idiot. Had a little smoke about a week ago, tiny amount, fast metabolism, and a bottle of some grape stuff that I read the military recommends to enlistees...say a prayer!

Fantastic place to visit.

"I have DirectTV in my 'bolthole' , and warm, warm slippers!"

How is it stocked for beer, though?

"My daughter also voted in her very first primary in NYC - for Obama - I credit her boyfriend, otherwise she probably wouldn't have been interested. She said there's a huge amount of support in the area she lives in - near Williamsburg, and very little for Hillary."

Woo hoo! Another one sucked into the process!

I think it's hilarious he actually had you going.

LOL. I'm sure he'll do fine. Worst case scenario, he could always come down with an acute case of the flu, and punt on the test.

17. Oh, it was SO hilarious - especially the first time when I REALLY
fell for it - I think I didn't speak to him for 3 days - this was months ago, when he decided he backed bush, and was going to become a republican. And I believed the little jerk. By the time he decided he was "supporting Huckabee", I kind of knew better. Truth is, if Obama wins, he says he WILL be canvassing, or active in some way, to get him elected (of course only if Huckabee drops out).

The Caped Crusader got a big kick out of that one, too - me, not so much! You both have warped senses of humor - course that's probably the thing I like the most about you...

It IS cold - you're right about that. If I had to choose it wouldn't be my choice to live here. And, no beer here - I haven't had one in almost 23 years (for good reason), and my husband for almost 30 (for better reason - no, actually I think me for better reason), although I don't mind anyone else drinking at all. The rest of my family makes up for me - my parents alone probably keep Labatt's in business.

My son will only be an hour away, which I'm happy about, and I paid for the grape stuff, or I probably would know nothing about it, but I also told him to get a home test, and Mr. Master's Degree THINKS he passed. I said "you THINK you passed", and reminded him of his Masters which he likes to brag about. I suggested maybe he get another one, and read the directions this time...

Yep - I definitely don't think you should get to go through life without a brat of your own! That's the real reason I was trying to talk you into it.

I am APPALLED, I tell you:

37. Know your candidate before throwing your support
Maya Soetoro-Ng's older brother came back from his freshman year in college and found her working on a math problem from a grammar-school grade level lower than the one she was in.

"He scolded me. He said, I should -- if anything -- work on a set for an older age, a higher age," Soetoro-Ng recalled in a 2004 interview. "He was bossy. He was domineering."

Her brother -- actually her half-brother -- is Barack Obama. But when their mother and Soetoro-Ng's father divorced, Obama took on a more fatherly role, she said.

"He was always pushing me to sort of, at that point, exceed my own lazy inclinations," Soetoro-Ng said in 2004. "My mother and father divorced when I was 9, so I think he started giving me a great deal of guidance as a big brother. And he helped me find my voice and my passion and helped to work to offer a lot of guidance."

Before you instinctively defend him ... consider if there wasn't another method to accomplish the laudable goal.

34. Damn near drowned on the lower third of Iron Ring
Went rafting on the Gauley during the fall drawdown, Class V from the get-go. Fell out of the raft just above the second drop of Iron Ring, and went over the pour-over at the exit.

Turned back to the raft to grab the throw bag, just in time to hear "Let him go, we gotta get set for the drop!"

Irk.

After getting smashed to the bottom by a few hundred tons of water a second and spun around like I was in a blender, was spit out with not too much wear or tear.

Still had my paddle.

I was laughing like a loon, but my buddy and the two guides were white as a sheet.

35. The paddle probably helped save you.
That bit of buoyancy might have made all the difference.

: )

Glad you enjoyed it and lived to tell the tale.

BTW where the hell is the New River? all I have rafted is the Colorado, the Eagle (in Colorado) and the Youghiogheny (sp?) back on the Maryland boarder (I wasn't impressed with this stretch).

Also, careful when you say Whitewater around here. some Clinton supporter may have a heart attack

43. It's been a while back, but that's not a bad fallback option.

The New River is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_River_%28Kanawha_River%29">here.

Geologically-speaking, it is a gross misnomer, as some geologists believe it may, in fact, be older than the Nile.

Its unusual south-to-north course suggests it formed before the Earth's polarity flipped. This makes for some VERY interesting hydraulics and other rough-riding features.

P.S. I've stopped worrying about what makes desperate Clinton supporters skittish.
