Clinton aide is backing Obama

ON the ropes, Hillary Clinton has suffered another blow: a former strategist has revealed he's backing Barack Obama for president.

David Wilhelm, national manager for Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and former Democratic National Committee chairman, yesterday endorsed Senator Obama, who's vying to be the US's first African-American president.

"The only reason this race appears to be closer than it actually is is the number of super-delegates that bought into Senator Clinton's inevitability early.

Too early, it seems," Mr Wilhelm, himself a super-delegate, said.

Super-delegates are free to vote for whom they like and can shift their allegiance any time before the national convention.

Because the race is so tight, it may well be the super-delegates who decide the nominee.

Senator Obama, who has been accumulating high-profile endorsements from leading Democrats, attempted to add more policy detail to his campaign pitches yesterday, unveiling a $US210 billion blueprint to create jobs over 10 years, to bolster the struggling economy.
