It seems to me that this has been a fantastically exciting campaign cycle for Dems. There is not one candidate that I was ashamed of, and it was an ongoing struggle for me to pick a favorite.
First it was Biden. Then I got upset and was for Kucinich, even though I knew that could not happen. Then it was Edwards. This is the man I voted for, before he suspended his campaign. I liked him a lot, still like him a lot, and regret that he did not gain traction and dropped out. Perhaps he will turn up as Attorney General in our next administration.
Now it is Obama.
I respect and admire Clinton, but it seems to me to be imperative that Obama win, for the following reason:
He can beat McCain, whereas there is doubt that HRC can. McCain is an old, temperamental, tired man, but he is experienced at ridiculing the Clintons. As disgusting as McCain is, he has been able to make the Clintons look foolish. There is no way he can do this to Obama; Obama is something new, for which McCain is totally unprepared.
When Obama is standing side by side with McCain, McCain's frailties, deficiencies and oddities will be manifestly apparent.
In my amateur opinion, this really is a matter of enormous gravity: we NEED to win this election, no matter what. We were unusually fortunate and had many great candidates, but we are down to the brass tacks now, and we need to win. Even though he was not my first or second choice, it's getting impossible to deny that Obama is something special.
To be blunt, I believe he can KICK McCain's ass like it has never been kicked before.
We probably ought to consider riding this momentum. Maybe this will be a crucial turning point for our nation, and a leap into a new, enlightened world.
