"Do You Want to Go Down in History as the One to Prevent a Black From Winning the White House?"
Isn't it time for Barack Obama to fire Jesse Jackson, Jr? This style of campaigning is pretty vile, IMO.

In an interview, Cleaver offered a glimpse of private conversations.

He said Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois had recently asked him "if it comes down to the last day and you're the only superdelegate? ... Do you want to go down in history as the one to prevent a black from winning the White House?

"I told him I'd think about it," Cleaver concluded.

Jackson, an Obama supporter, confirmed the conversation, and said the dilemma may pose a career risk for some black politicians. "Many of these guys have offered their support to Mrs. Clinton, but Obama has won their districts. So you wake up without the carpet under your feet. You might find some young primary challenger placing you in a difficult position" in the future, he added.

30. Obama has used the race card through reverse psychology
quite effectively! I am looking for some small attitude of the black community for the many non blacks who have helped them in their struggle. Since Obama...... I have seen none! I do not for one second think this is what MLK was all about.

I agree, this was not what MLK was all about. But it is what Obama has been all about since entering
Everyone, sadly, seems to be underestimating the powerful design behind Obama's campaign, that even perhaps John Edwards was not aware of.

Everyone kind of sat up straight when Kerry endorsed Obama, leaving Edwards out in the cold. But I believe it was Kerry's plan all along to endorse Obama, as it was Kennedy's. The governor's campaign in Massachusetts was the prototype for Obama's campaign, with all these little "black identity" tricks built into the design of the campaign along the critical chain.

Really? Please explain. Because Jackson Stephens bankrolling Bill's political career in Arkansas AND his primary campaign is what disgusts me and proves how dishonest and UNCREDIBLE Clintons have been as Dem leaders.

107. the Obama-prototype Patrick ran on idealistic and unrealistic promises, promised new leadership

sound familiar?

Yes, that's what he sold to the voters in Massachusetts the same thing Obama attempts to sell today. But Patrick's promises have come up empty, and he has failed to deliver. If the next governor's election were held today he would lose because of his low approval ratings of c. 47% or perhaps lower.

Obama's promises would also prove empty, just like the prototype, full of fluff and platitudes.

Dubai and Saudi Royals and we have lived through the BLOWBACK from those decisions, haven't we?

What makes you so sure that Clintons WON'T keep delivering that protection for the Bushes and the powerful elite they served in the past? Especially since Clinton has accepted MILLIONS of dollars recently from the exact same Dubai royals he protected in the past when he deep-sixed the outstanding matters in BCCI?

99. Jackson is not the first Obama surrogate to play the "black candidate" card either
Michelle did indirectly but this Obama surrogate did so directly: Obama supporter Charles Barron, a NYC councilman, (November 2007): “Why wouldn’t black people support a black candidate who is ready to lead America?" http://www.observer.com/2007/obama-celeb-supporters-ups ...

97. You're wrong. The Obamas began playing the race card in NOVEMBER
Everyone thinks race became an issue in January. In fact is was introduced into the race in November by the Obamas. Remember this was at a time when Hillary looked bulletproof in Nevada and led big in New Hampshire. Obama was in a close three way battle in Iowa (this was before Edwards faded in Iowa, only to recover late but it was not enough). He needed to build a firewall in South Carolina. The exit poll from the South Carolina primary makes it very obvious how he did it.

November 12, 2007:

With polls showing African-Americans have yet to give overwhelming support to White House hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), his wife Michelle said "black America will wake up and get it" in an interview running on MSNBC on Monday. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/11/12/michelle-obama...
(this was at a time Obama was in the 40’s with black voters in an eight candidate field. Clearly his wife expected him to get well more than the 40’s and we now know what tactics they used to go from the 40’s to the mid to high 80’s)

Obama supporter Charles Barron, a NYC councilman, (November 2007): “Why wouldn’t black people support a black candidate who is ready to lead America?" http://www.observer.com/2007/obama-celeb-supporters-ups...

November 30, 2007. Obama supporter Chris Rock at a Harlem event:
A few minutes later, the comedian Chris Rock picked up on that theme. “You’d be really embarrassed if he won and you wasn’t with him,” Rock said. He altered his voice to comic affect. “‘I had that white lady. What was I thinking? What was I thinking?’” http://www.observer.com/2007/obama-celeb-supporters-ups...

If this is true, Obama needs to drop Jesse Jr. from the team. Now.

Your desperation to deflect a very negative race card play by Team Obama is certainly expected, but no one is going to buy it. You sound like Bush trying to word-parse definitinos of "torture"

Jackson Jr. said what what reported to Clyburn, and if Obama does not drop Jr. now, ten he has no shame at all.

5. It s either OK to strongarm superdelegates or it isn't
And this must apply to both camapigns. Anything else is dishonesty. I am not a hypocrite - I think any form of legal persuasion is OK for both camps. If Hillary says vote for me or face the wrath of the Clinton machine, then that's legit. If Obama says vote for me or face the wrath of the black activists then that's legit. I could accept (not agree with but accept and see the logic of) someone who says NEITHER is legit, and that superdelegates should receive only the basic info and be left to themselves. However anyone who comments that this is horrible better be willing to say that HRC's strongarming is also horrible, and anyone who defends this must be willing to equally defend Clinton's heavy pressure and stick approach to superdelegates too.

This is about a proven and documented case regarding the Obama camp. If you have something similar, and sourced, regarding the Clinton camp, then by all means bring it to the table.

But if all you're going to do is regurgitate some sort of "BUT BUT BUT I bet the Clintons do it too!!! "line of speculative baloney, then you will be more than likely to either be told to stick a fucking cork in it, or just ignored.

It's been made fairly public that the Clinton campaign does intend to strongarm superdelegates. I don't think the Obama campaign should sit idly while they do, and you are quite right - it's hypocritical. I hope it isn't left up to the superdelegates, and if it is, if they don't go along with the voters, it's going to be a mess.

103. It isn't about race. It's about the msm wanting to put forward the weakest Democratic candidate
Meanwhile they selected the strongest rethug candidate. The msm love affair with McCain did end for much of 2007 but that was when Giuliani was running strong. He was the msm choice and was the strongest candidate for the general the rethugs had. As soon as Giuliani tanked the msm went to plan B, McCain. Compare their coverage of McCain over the past three months to that of Romney.

26. Some Democrats sound like Republicans
Obama supporters are making a serious mistake talking about the Clintons the way Republicans talk about them. The last time Democrats talked about the Clintons that way was 1994.

Democrats in Congress were convinced by the news media that the Clintons were poison. The Democrats fell for it and distanced themselves. We all know what happened then. The Democrats lost Congress to the Republicans for the next 12 years.

If Obama supporters keep this up he may win the primary, but he's not going to win the general election. When Democrats talk like Republicans, Republicans win.

Bill Clinton used the the fairytale metaphor in his 92 election race to talk about politicians who make wild promises in order to get elected..Point against whoever on the Obama team thought this was racist...

So ...the great civil war is about to get a lot worse. When the right accused Gore of claiming he'd invented the Internet, the Left rolled their eyes and said, "How can people be so stupid? Why can't people with a brain just look at the damn facts?" But today, they believe every Clinton lie that same whore media feeds them.

58. Well put -- why are Dems talking about the Clintons the way Republicans do?
It's a big turn-off. If the Obama movement is so spectacular, why do they need to tear down the Clintons to win? Shouldn't they be carried to the White House on the shoulders of angels? It seems unnecessary to slash and burn their way to the top, echoing the RW talking points. So much for a new style of politics.

72. BALONEY - Hillary was up by 40% at one point. Kennedy-Kerry CLOSED THAT GAP
and WON delegates for Obama he wouldn't have gotten.

Nice spin you all try - but the FACT remains that Clinton's numbers DROPPED dramatically. HER spokesperson, Bill Clinton, has been LOSING votes for Hillary as Kerry and Kennedy have been helping Obama GAIN NATIONALLY as well as in Mass.

Ever try truth serum before you post?

77. Not my point is it? Kerry-Kennedy were NATIONAL endorsers not just Mass as Hillary claims.
And The MATH shows Obama closed a considerable gap in Mass that Hillary had been up 40% at one point. She was ALWAYS going to win Mass but she was expected to win by a HUGE percentage.

Do the math - Obama got delegates he wouldn't have had in Mass. Hillary lost delegates she EXPECTED.

Plus, Obama got the NATIONAL surge he needed with the Kennedy-Kerry backing. Some of you seem to think their network is only in Mass, but Kerry kept a national network in place since 2004 and he is using it for Obama and THAT is why Kerry is way more relevant than Hillcamp andmedia acknowledges and WHY Bill worked his tail off to persuade Kerry.

104. I said she was up at one point by almost 40%. I didn't say right before Kennedy endorsed
though it was nowhere close to being just 47% - you must have seen an outlier to reference that number, and I also stressed that Kerry and Kennedy's endorsements helped NATIONALLY and that is indisputable.

And YOU have no record of being factual in our exchanges. You rarely reply when you are proven over and over again to be wrong. Why you even keep trying is a joke - must be ego.

105. Obama has closed the gap everywhere but why?
The bulk of Edwards, Biden, Dodd, Kucinich, and Richardson supporters went over to Obama. Wisconsin is very illustrative. Hillary hasn't lost any ground there. She was always polling in the 40's. What has happened is the supporters of the other candidates went to Obama as their candidates exited.

112. That happens all the time, but when Kerry and Kennedy endorsed it became apparent
soon after that it had an impact NATIONALLY, or else Edwards would still be in the running today.

It's psychological impact that says Obama CAN handle national issues of security, too. Having known leaders on military issues support a candidate with no military experience also helped turn it around for Clinton in 92, if you care about accuracy.

Guess what?

SOME of those superdelegates are looking at how many of the voters in their respective districts support Obama and are thinking twice.

And if it's black voters, in black districts talking to a black superdelegate about a black candidate running for POTUS too fucking bad for the Clintons.

One can only hope the Clintons' pathetic gambit of trying to steal the nomination by strongarming super delegates fails.

At the same time I agree with half of what he said - if a superdelegates district chose a candidate that superdelegate should align with their district. The other half I'm non too comfortable with, however it may end up being an issue for said superdelegate in their next election cycle.

Strongarming it is not however. Strongarming would involve a threat of negative consequences arising from the person issuing the warning. This seems somewhat like warning a candidate that not voting on a certain issue will create dischord in that politicians' district.

63. There is a mutiny underway in Black America.
It's not just Jesse Jackson Jr. All the old guard are being told the score -- quietly, but in no uncertain terms.

You can get on your high-horse about it, Crisco, but I wouldn't. Your outrage would only reinforce the reason for the mutiny: the fact that while the relationship between the old guard and the Democratic Party as personified in the Clintons may have resulted in cushy appointments to this or that position for the members of the old guard, it was increasingly irrelevant -- or detrimental -- to the interests of Black America as a whole.

The old guard have just experienced a severe crisis of legitimacy when they failed to deliver the black vote for Hillary, as blacks have bolted the Clinton plantation in droves and headed for Barack Obama -- a black leader who arose from outside the old guard.

That's what this is about. Jesse Jackson Jr. is reminding these black leaders that their days in power are numbered if they try to overrule their millions of consituents.

I was telling you about a mutiny in BLACK AMERICA! I found this out by delving in the Black-o-Sphere. I'm talking about Black America's Old Guard.

Your response is a picture-perfect illustration of why your outrage should be ignored.

You don't even have a ghost of a clue as to what Jackson is really talking about, because you haven't bothered to find out. Your sole interest here is in promoting the candidacy of Hillary Clinton and slapping down anyone who would get in the way of that. To that end, you have attempted to interject yourself into a conversation that is underway in a community not your own. Do you ever listen first?

It's a reasonable double standard. We SHOULD ignore the outrage of those who plainly don't know what they're talking about, and who evidently don't care enough to inform themselves even a little. If you don't care about what you claim outrages you, why should I?

In the argument over Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the black community is discussing its future -- which path it will take. If you didn't care enough to listen, why should your opinion count for anything in that debate?

the Obama campaign has gone beyond "negative ads"- or at least its surrogates have. Don't take my word for it- go to NPR.ORG and look for an interview from today with an African American congressman. He said that just about every member of the Black Caucus has been threatened. Not physically, but with loss of their office, with a promise to run someone against them, if they don't vote for Obama. (As you know, they are superdelegates). He also mentioned flyers being sent out.

124. God damn, it's great to have this sort of ethical dilemma!
These are the sorts of problems an entire subset of this nation has wished it had for two hundred twenty years.

Eyes on the prize, my friends. Deal with the problems we face squarely, because we, the people are finally privileged to be the ones to deal with them!

AT LAST! Woo, hoo!

128. Because that's more important than a woman becoming president, right?
As if we mean nothing.

130. yeah, basically
I think it is more important for the country to have it's first black president rather than the country to have it's first First Lady become president.

131. I don't,
I think it's more important to have the first woman president of the country, but that's not why I'm supporting HRC.

132. Given that it's socially okay to celebrate the prospect of the first woman president...
... whereas even the liberals at DU start shrieking about "reverse racism" if anyone timidly admits to hoping that Obama will become the first black president, it's clear to me that electing a black president will indeed mean more.
