Report: Lewis backing Obama?
Posted: 11:44 PM ET

(CNN) – Is he or isn’t he? The New York Times reported Thursday night that Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights movement veteran and Democratic congressional leader who endorsed Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid last year, was switching his superdelegate vote to Barack Obama.

Within hours, according to the Washington Post, his spokeswoman Brenda Jones said the story — and an earlier Associated Press report that the Georgia congressman was considering the move — had been "observations, not statements of preference."

The New York Times had also reported that Lewis had not yet endorsed Obama, and would make a decision on that within a few days.

As of early Friday, there had been no comment from the congressman himself on either report.

“In recent days, there is a sense of movement and a sense of spirit,” Lewis said in the Times story, which was published on the paper’s Web site Thursday night. “Something is happening in America, and people are prepared and ready to make that great leap.”

The Times also quoted Lewis as saying that he hoped to prevent a potentially bloody battle over the nomination, and that if the two sides were seeking “a mediator, a negotiator or a peacemaker, I’d be happy to step in…I don’t want to see Mrs. Clinton damaged or Mr. Obama damaged.”

There is considerable confusion this morning as to whether or not civil rights icon Representative John Lewis (D-GA), an influential congressman and Super Delegate who was supporting Hillary Clinton, has switched sides and now supports Barack Obama.

Several news outlets - including AP and The New York Times - are reporting that Lewis made the switch in an interview last night:

4. I read that he wasn't switching endorsments, but switching his vote.
It's in Will Pitt's thread. I have no idea what's going on.

8. Cut n Paste Journalism
It grieves me, this 'news' that goes around the world at the speed of light. Modern reporting... sigh. Nothing more strenuous than running whatever comes in on the ticker. No investigating, not even so much as a phone call to verify it before sending it out to astonish the public. Who cares if it is the truth? Who cares if it sways voters... changes peoples minds? As long as it fills space and sells papers.

12. Translation....
John Lewis rec'd several irate calls from Bill, Hillary, Chelsea, Chelsea's boyfriend, every member of
the DLC, Hillary's Sunday school teacher, Bill's tailor, Hillary's manicurist.

Lewis just wants the frantic Hillary-camp calls to end.

Can you imagine the strong arming that's taking place right now?

Look in that thread and see how many people praise him, say he's earned his right to endorse anyone he wants, and what a great hero he is.

How will Lewis fare?

And the wheels of the bus go round and round.

18. I didn't realize that stating an opinion...
...which was clearly hyperbolic and light-hearted in nature--required mountains of empirical
data and double blind studies.

Man, some of you people are wound so tight, I bet you walk like Emperor penguins.

My post was in response to #12 (which it clearly says on my post). This person was relaying an imaginary phone conversation that had the Clintons badgering Mr. Lewis who then changed his changed mind to get them to stop calling.

Perhaps you have that person on ignore.

26. MSNBC just reported that he did, along with three other SDs.. two of
whom backed away from Clinton and went to uncomitted. Don't have a link and don't have time to look for one and don't remember the name of the other SD who was said to have switched. Sorry. Will try to find it later if no one has reported on it.

They really should report facts and not rumor and should have sourced everything out instead of just looking for a quick "breaking news" headline. Its irritating.

36. Do my work for me
I bet you've had the same experience I've had here on the web. People who don't bother to look up something for their own benefit won't bother to come back to see if anybody else did it for them. Sometimes I can't resist the impulse to point that out. I'd bet a dollar that you feel the same on occasion. :hi:

Black Leader, a Clinton Ally, Tilts to Obama
By JEFF ZELENY and PATRICK HEALY
MILWAUKEE — Representative John Lewis, an elder statesman from the civil rights era and one of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s most prominent black supporters, said Thursday night that he planned to cast his vote as a superdelegate for Senator Barack Obama in hopes of preventing a fight at the Democratic convention....Though Mr. Lewis had praise for Mrs. Clinton and for her historic candidacy, he said he could decide within days whether to formally endorse Mr. Obama.

He also said he and other lawmakers would meet in the coming days to decide how they intended to weigh in on the nominating fight.
