Scenes from the trail: Africans for Obama

President Bush is visiting Africa this week, but he can't escape the campaign to succeed him. CNN's Erika Dimmler took this photograph from the president's motorcade in Tanzania.

69. To a large extent true
I am from Denmark. And everyone I know, that I debate this with, is hoping for Obama.

What is good, and most importantly right, for the US, is good for the rest of us too. For good and bad, world politics and happenings are affected by the stance of the US government. And noone here will probably contest that its been quite a bit of the bad the last 8 years.

Having someone you trust to be deliberate and thoughtful in charge of the singular most powerful military in the world makes us all sleep better at night.

The moment I can make my own thread I will go into detail on what the perspective is, from this other side of the great pond.

But I am confident that Obama can change the worlds perspective on USA drastically to the better - and achieve so much more for it. Way more than Hillary that comes across as a chip of the old white boys block. Fair or not.

79. Welcome to DU! Speaking for myself, I hope you realize that
we are in the beginning of a process that will bring the U.S. into better world relations again. I have been very ashamed of what my country, in my name, has done to Iraq et al. If all goes well, we should elect a Democratic president this Fall. I too think Sen. Obama will achieve much in changing the world's perspective of the U.S.

I am looking forward to your perspective from across the pond. We need the feedback! Again, glad you're on board....welcome! :hi:

87. Bush did not win in 2000 or 04.
In 2000 there were many illegal tactics used (such as ex-felon lists for voters) which turned Florida for Bush when Gore actually would have won there with a fair vote by probably 10,000 votes.

In 04, the problem was the voting machines along with the same illegal tactics used in 2000. The exit polls showed a clear Kerry victory across the country. For all their problems, exit polls are definitely more trustworthy than voting machines which are trivially easy to tamper with and maliciously program and which are audited, if at all, only superficially.

When the vote is counted in total secrecy without verification it's impossible to have a democracy. You may know all of this but if not, be sure to check out the Election Reform and Discussion Forum on DU and read up on it. A lot of good books have been published here detailing the fraud. Steve Freeman's book "Was the 04 Election Stolen?" is one of the best but there are many others. The people writing these books are not conspiracy theorists but academics who know statistics and/or have studied the election in depth.

The American people never elected Bush. His corporate cronies used every illegal maneuver imaginable to get him elected and keep him there. The media meanwhile was and largely remains asleep and indifferent.

Was up early the morning of the last election (that being late your evening/night) to see what the result was. And seeing Bush win it - again, more or less ruined that day (and quite a few since :)).
I was in Finland at the time, and they were as astonished and saddened as me and my danish friends, that Bush could get another term.

And I have read quite a few reports on the election problems (both 2000 and 2004) since. Incredible stories to say the least.

In case you are interested, here in Denmark the election to the national parliament goes like this:
2-3 weeks before an election, voting cards are sent out to all above or on the age of 18 from the county/town that you are registered as living in. No specific voting registration needed.
With that in hand I can get in to vote at my appointed place. (even if I forget it, I can still vote if I can provide photo ID. Passport or drivers license)
Then I am given a paper ballot - shown into an empty voting booth, where I tick off my desired choice, go out on the other side and dump it into a locked off container. I can pick a party or a specific person. (The parties themselves lay out the rules for how nonspecific votes are distributed among their candidates.)
There has been talks about using a more modern technology - but stories from your country haven't exactly given those ideas wind in the sails, I guess.

As far as I understand, the counting is then done at the end of the election by a group with representatives of the contestants, or at least a representative group of majority and opposition (we currently have 8 parties in the parliament of greatly varying sizes).

Reports of tinkering or problems with the votes are exceedingly rare and on an extremely small scale. We have an attendance of 85-90% btw. But then again we are only 5,5 mil. so managing it is probably a tad easier than in your case.

As far as determining who is going to be prime minister (as close as we get to a president) is then done by the now elected parties that will appoint a "leader of government negotiation"(practically - but not technically - making him prime minister), which usually is the leader of the largest party in a block that can muster the majority of seats.

Bushes-africa tour
President Bush is back in Africa on five-country tour for the second and presumably final time during his presidency. Many anticipate that the President’s visit is an opportunity to shore up support among African allies for America’s strategic and economic interests, including expansion of the U.S. military command in Africa, AFRICOM.
We speak to veteran Africa analyst Horace Campbell, professor of political science and African American studies at Syracuse University.

AMY GOODMAN: The reaction on the ground has been mixed. Many in the eastern African country of Tanzania welcomed the $700 MILLION GRANT in foreign aid President Bush signed Sunday. But some 2,000 Tanzanians also protested his visit and question whether it will bring US military bases closer to African soil.

AFRICOM, the US military command for Africa, was created last year and is based in Germany. Liberia is the only African country that’s publicly offered to host AFRICOM. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley told reporters Thursday not to expect any major announcements about AFRICOM on this trip. But many anticipate the President’s visit is an opportunity to shore up support among African allies for America’s strategic and economic interests.

To find out more on this subject, we’re joined on the phone from Kingston, Jamaica by veteran Africa analyst, Horace Campbell, professor of political science and African American studies at Syracuse University.
Analyst: On Africa Visit, Bush Pushes Agenda of Continent-Wide U.S. Military Expansion
I skipped here......read the entire transcript!

As a result of the failures in Iraq and because the projection of the United States is that Middle Eastern oil will become more problematic in the next ten to fifteen years, there is a major thrust to control African oil resources. So, while in the past African militarism by the United States was divided into three commands—that is, the European Command for fourteen countries, the Central Command for eight countries, and the Pacific Command that involved Madagascar, Seychelles and Mauritius—now the United States want to bring all of African countries under the Africa Command, except for Egypt, which would still be under the Central Command.

99. With me it seemed that pot was calling out kettle but that imperfect.......
analogy or vehicle is hard to grasp without turning into what you might be trying to describe. An n calling another an n is a known but this only because the establishment excepts it even it's slang. The divided society is what the establishment holds most dear and close. The establishment has spent years cultivating and inculcating the divisions into everything and especially into the way people think about it. Its not about what divides us but who will get to run away with the cake while we conflict between ourselves. They don't even care how they have to divide everybody, just as long as it gets done. A prolonged, drag out fight between the democratic party is what the establishment is looking for, what a surprise

The establishment has proved they are the weaker link. Just in this primary season Edwards beat his opponents with anti-corporate message dollar for dollar on the vote for vote total by six to one. The establishment has been front running their corporate person and now she is being eclipsed by someone who gets most of his strength from the grass roots. Hillary was lulled into the belief that corporations would deliver for her. Since the establishment hasn't been able to deliver but still wants to have the cake, they will do what ever they need and be satisfied with a scorched earth and a dysfunctional DLC (that they have been sponsoring). We should not be surprised or scared by these cake thieves but should watch the way they are working none the less.

102. Okay, well then I officially have no idea what you're talking about.
I read your post three times and I feel like you're responding to something else entirely. The now deleted message made a very, very racist comment about African people. I responded because I just couldn't let a comment like that go. I noted that not only was the person racist, but that they had made a total of 24 posts on DU and none of them had anything intelligent to say. Then I alerted the mods and they promptly deleted the post.

I'm not sure why you think I was the "pot calling out the kettle" as I've never to my knowledge posted racist comments. Not in this thread or anywhere else. As for the "establishment," John Edwards, corporations, cake thieves, etc., I truly have no idea what any of it has to do with me calling a spade a spade (or a racist a racist, in this case).

105. Yep, my bad and out of context was my interpretation of what ever was posted
My coworker friend answered that question to my assumption tonight. And i am really sorry that came out that way, my bad :spank:

What i was thinking was that we all know what is wrong when we see it but it's just hard to put it into words without becoming what we might be critical of. The use of loaded words often brings things into the conversation that should have never been there. Some people can go around like a loaded gun that is half-cocked. You can't un-cock the gun unless your careful or theres no ammo in it, or the round goes off. In any case it is stupid to be like that (but sad to say it sometimes happens with me).

My coworker-friend in real quick way pointed out to me in our discussion tonight about politics that all everybody seemed to be doing (as far as the establishment goes) was trying to distract from all the galling years of effed up things that have went on. I take it he almost has it all down about what's happening because it happens to him but also gets it more word and mouth because he so talkative. The trick he also said is be getting everybody fighting so we don't notice the other things.

Btw, i am one of those token euros at my union workplace and neighborhood if that can in anyway help you understand my perspective a little more but that probably another story for another time .

36. Of course
People in Africa are going to support Obama. There's nothing wrong with that. Before anyone goes calling me a racist -- Ireland was gaga of JFK -- they were proud that he was a descendant of their country. They were crazy about him.

Nothing wrong with it.

I'll be more impressed when we see signs like that in other parts of the world.

And let me say it again - there's nothing wrong with them being proud of Obama and hoping he wins. Hell, they're claiming him in a small town in Ireland where his mother's family can be traced to.

63. Even the Hillbots have got to appreciate Bush's nose being rubbed in it so far from his home bubble.
Note: I support neither Obama nor Hillary (I caucused for Kucinich on principle in my precinct; Edwards got my vote in the second round to achieve the +15% AND our little group beat the Clintonites by one vote. However, Obama's supporters still buried us both combined. :) ), but I'll hold my nose and vote for whichever that wins the Dem nomination for the general election.
