RNC donor event outlines Obama attack plan

By: Jeffrey Ressner
Feb 17, 2008 07:18 PM EST

RNC honchos get earful on methods GOP will use to battle Dems for control of the White House.

Focusing on Barack Obama’s “inexperience” and “undisciplined messaging” are two ways to ensure that the senator from Illinois doesn’t get to be president, according to honchos at the Republican National Committee. Big RNC contributors got an earful this weekend about methods the GOP will use to battle the Democrats for control of the White House this fall, as well as other initiatives central to the conservative cause.

The RNC’s “winter retreat” for major donors at Los Angeles’ Beverly Wilshire Hotel featured such party stalwarts as Karl Rove, RNC chairman Robert Duncan, former Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams, as well as some Hollywood types, including Dave Berg, a segment producer and “political director” for "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.

But chief among the RNC’s concerns were how to keep a tight grip on the White House this fall. Plenty of lowbrow Hillary Rodham Clinton jokes were tossed around at the three-day event, but of highest concern was the notion of Obama seizing the Oval Office in a contest against presumptive GOP nominee John McCain.

“We all dislike Hillary,” declared Southern California Rep. Ken Calvert, from the Inland Empire east of Los Angeles, echoing thoughts of the roughly 75 attendees at a Sunday morning RNC session.

“Forgetting who will be the easiest to beat, I've got to tell you, a President Hillary doesn’t scare me nearly as much as a President Obama.”

1. I hope Obama has great advisers. So far it seems that way.
As for the fact that the GOP hates H. Clinton, of course. The GOP is comprised of sexist @-holes who can't stand an attractive female with brains. Such a woman instantly emasculates them. They're also racists, but the fact that Obama is male makes them only fear his policies, not his person. They just don't want him, period. They will go after him big time about his "inexperience."

On the other hand, I think they underestimate Mr. Obama. Mr. Obama is elegantly slim and his words embrace rather than attack. He isn't gruff and aggressive. He's also not non-sensical and rednecky (like the White House village idiot). However, he can defend himself (and us). If pressed, I have a feeling he'll press back ten times harder. I've seen that come out, very elegantly, but oh boy!

2. Considering the attacks from the Clinton camp,
I'd say Obama has had plenty of practice for dealing the GOP smear machine - the Clinton machine is about as nasty.

3. Are you kidding me?
I sure pray to God you're not Obama's adviser. If you are, he needs to change and quick! If YOU think the comments from the Clinton camp are anything compared to what he will experience from the Republicans, you have NEVER experienced a general election and the viciousness that comes with it!

And by the way, I'm an Edwards supporter that now supports Obama.

10. Maybe not quite up there with Kerry's Swiftboating or Max Cleland's morph into Osama...
but it's the same basic Rovian tactics - blatant lies plastered all over the media, frivolous exaggerations of minor gaffes, etc.

Obama's been defending against this stuff quite well so far - responding quickly and decisively with the truth and challenging his opponents with the issues.

13. Not even. H. Clinton wasn't even president and she was accused of having murdered someone....
of being a lesbian, of having thick ankles, of being an adulterer, of countless things. Kerry was accused of being a murderer in Vietnam, of being a liar, of countless things. Do you really think the Republicans are going as half-assed in their attacks as Obama and Clinton have been with one another? We'd better not even think that or we're going to see another Repuke in the White House. We'd better know that they're going to unleash the hounds of hell on us, whoever gets the nomination.

11. I think that
the Clintons are still giving Obama as good a test as any considering that despite having been impeached, Bill STILL managed to get back into office for a 2nd term, which sealed his status as the ultimate teflon man who could surely hurl 'em as much as the best of the repukes. That's why the RW nutjob talkshow hosts hate them so. He bested them at their game and they are still bitter about it. And in 1996, they put up the McCain equivalent - Bob Dole - as the one for Clinton to run against and of course we know the rest of that story. Which is why they are freaking out so about having yet another seeming "moderate" to run against the dems..

The repuke's biggest weakness has been revealed by them - they had become as Limpballs deemed them - the "Big Tent" republicans and many in their tent have been shoved or have dropped by the wayside now, leaving only a small core constituency. The fundies have pulled back and are regrouping as they try to sort out scandals and loss of mission, the neocons have been laid bare for the massive failure of the endless wars and wars that have killed millions and disrupted the world economy, the libertarians, who ruled the airwaves during the Reagan years, have been all but marginalized as kooks (as they have labeled Ron Paul... and I never thought I'd see the day when the "revered" libertarian would be booted out of the repuke tent!)... as they sat silently while the pResident and his henchman trampled on every principle the libertarian preached... And that leaves your fiscal conservatives, who discover that once the "other side" adopts your "principles", then game over. And so they find themselves back to a soon-to-be-remolded moderate like McCain, who they are trying to force to become a RW nutjob like themselves by forcing him to totally embrace the daft side of his party.... And in that case, he will fail over and over in their eyes and in the eyes of the public (for not being true to himself).

No... I don't think that things are as locked tight for the other side as they may seem.

14. From your mouth to God's ears.
We need to win.

By the way, did I mention how much I hate Repukes? If I landed on a deserted island with one I might very well end up gouging his eyes out.

12. I disagree
They are putting so much distance between their candidates and el pretzeldente, his insertion into the campaign will surely doom their candidate.

15. Every point they're talking about has already been used by Clinton and failed dismally.
Bullet points from the presentation:

"The first called for pointing out what the GOP views as a seeming incongruity between Obama and the mantle of commander in chief. The second point harkened back to Obama’s days in the Illinois state Senate, noting how his “pattern of voting ‘present’ offers many openings to question his candidacy.” The third offered hope to the GOP faithful that “we can be confident in a campaign about issues.” A fourth bullet point relayed how “undisciplined messaging carries great risk,” while the fifth and final attack point stressed, “His greatest weakness is inexperience. He is not ready to be commander in chief. He is not ready to be president.”

No doubt the 527's will morph Obama/Osama/muslim/terrorist and twist his willingness to talk with leaders we disagree with into talking with terrorists. But the RNC seems to be recycling what Clinton has already pushed hard.

17. Yup. It's the 527s we'll have to watch out for.
The RNC will do their typical hack job, but the really ugly, vile stuff, they'll outsource.

18. Ah, but during the primaries the MSM has backed Obama up and
slammed Hillary every time she opened her mouth.

They are going to turn in the GE; his free ride will be over.

They don't "fear" him. They are just trying to wrap up primary season by pretending. Those two talking points are actually true. Obama can try whining and calling everything racist but he won't get anywhere when the MSM gets busy with him.

19. Wow, my rep made the news again
(snip)
“We all dislike Hillary,” declared Southern California Rep. Ken Calvert, from the Inland Empire east of Los Angeles, echoing thoughts of the roughly 75 attendees at a Sunday morning RNC session.
(snip)

His other memorable moment (for me anyway) is of him making the blotter report (then that piece of the blotter report being expunged) when being caught by the police in the middle of a orange grove miles from nowhere being with a lady of the night both being drunk as skunk. The explanation was of him just driving her home
