From Kos:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/2/18/204120/270/321/459357

Here's what John Edwards said at the New Hampshire debate--the night before Clinton got teary-eyed and passionate:

But that's just an example of why this battle is personal for me. You know, we need a president who believes deeply -- in here -- believes deeply in this battle.

And it is personal for me. When I see these lobbyists roaming around Washington, D.C., taking all the politicians to cocktail parties, I mean, the picture I get in my head is my father and my grandmother going in that mill every day so that I could have the chances I've had.

And here's Hillary's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVlwH7-05Fk) direct lifting of this effective "personal for me" line THE VERY NEXT DAY! Watch for the blatant plagiarism of Edwards's "personal for me" at :025 or so. I think this proves the slightly inauthentic quality to this moment as well.

12. hilary plagiarizes Dean! I want Dean
to sue her ass!

<snip>

"For instance, I looked up Senator Clinton's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner speech from last week. Here's a particularly familiar line:

"Are you ready to take back the White House..."
That sounds an awful lot like this one:

"...and then we're going to Washington, D.C., to take back the White House! YAAARRR!"
She could easily have said, "Are you ready to reclaim the White House?" But instead, she used the same words made famous by Howard Dean four years ago.

But that's small-time. Here's a major problem for Senator Clinton's campaign if her staff and surrogates really want to engage in this so-called "plagiarism" debate. At the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, Senator Clinton employed what's called "anaphora" -- a common technique of repeating a word or phrase for emphasis in a speech:...

<snip>
What's the next attack, then? Senator Obama stole his haircut from whoever? Senator Obama's gestures are lifted from what's his name? Seriously, is this what Howard Wolfson and Mark Penn have been reduced to? Senator Clinton, if you really want to win this thing, you need to fire these guys."

hilary won't fire them because they're all she has.

6. I heard McCain say "I'm fired up" also. It's not the same thing to use a line
but an entire speech is something different.

23. The problem Obama will have in the GE with this issue is the real
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 11:35 AM by Dhalgren
point of all of this. Trying to shout down the Republican attack machine will not work. Obama will have to "go negative" on McCain, which won't be hard to do, but it will undercut the idea of a "unifying" and "different" kind of politics. This is one of the problems with "new" kinds of politics; the old kind is still effective. Instead of bashing Clinton with "she does it too" kinds of reactions, how about accepting the fact that Obama will be the Democratic candidate and how is he going to deal with these issues when not only the Republican smear machine is attacking, but when the media is attacking him, too? Mr. Obama's campaign had better come up with very good methods for dealing with these smears, because they are going to be orders of magnitude greater this summer and fall...
