THIS is plagarizing?
Edited on Mon Feb-18-08 09:51 PM by Levgreee

“Don’t tell me words don’t matter,” Obama said. “‘I have a dream.’ Just words? ‘We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.’ Just words? ‘We have nothing to fear but fear itself.’ Just words? Just speeches?” It's true that speeches don't solve all problems....

"Is that uh... all I have to offer is words. Just words. ‘We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.’ Just words! Just words. 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Just words. Ask not what your country can do for you, not what you can do for your country. Just words! I have a dream. Just words!"

I see two original words made by Patrick here. Just, and words. The rest are not originally made Patrick.

How should Obama have worded this? Should he have said, as my friend Patrick said, that Martin Luther King said... I have a dream. Just words? As Patrick said, that Thomas Jefferson said, We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.’

Or should he have worded it differently? Instead of "copying" just words, said "These are just words? These are just words?" "these words don't matter? These words don't matter?"

Does he have to completely avoid the style, of "quote"-message-"quote"-repeat same message-"quote"-message

What I see is Obama copying the same message/idea, not the same speech. This is a blip in the speech. If you showed a minute before and after for each speaker, you would see the speeches are very different.

Listen to two minutes of Obama's speech. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cd-AJeJvBE only this several lines is similar in style. This sort of things likely happens ALL the time in speeches, although perhaps a bit less of a parallel in style of speech, rhetoric.

7. Axelrod had suggestions about what to say when attacked.
He gave them to Obama when it seemed appropriate, and Obama listened.

8. HAH funny, they give an Obama line about "being someone with a funny name", and 2 years later,
Patrick talked about having a funny name. How is this a slam against Obama?

11. In all this "plagerism" shit going back & forth
I have never seen what Deval Patrick thinks.

Considering that he endorsed Obama AFTER all this happened, he probably doesn't give it much thought at all.

14. Actually Axelrod "repackaged" Obama's 2004 Senate campaign for Patrick in 2006.
Axelrod worked on Obama's 2004 Senate campaign and then went to work for Patrick's 2006 campaign. And then back to Obama for his run for the Presidency.

26. Yes, it is deeper than just plagiarism. It's hypocrisy
NBC just did a segment tonite on the (gasp) "plagiarism." They ended with a clip showing Hillary using part of Bill's speech from two years previous. I think they better start being a little more careful about where they throw the mud. Seems like most of it falls back in their face.

18. Same attack ... Same response... from the same Media person in each campaign
Besides that the same two guys are Friends.

There was even an article in the Boston Globe last april about how these 2 guys use each others ideas on a regular basis.

This is just one more straw that the Clintons are grabbing for.

If Barack can't use "Just Words" from a friend why can Hillary use "Fired Up" from her opponent?

19. As was mentioned on the Schultz Show today by a female caller, also a Phd...
'concepts' i.e. "same message/idea"; are not the least of which that are capable of being plagiarized.

25. Old news
All of this is old news. Obama has already dealt with the similarities of his and Patrick's campaigns see this old story from April of 2007 http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2007/04/16/patrick_obama_campaigns_share_language_of_hope/?page=1.

Clinton seems a little desperate.
