Can o' worms update: Hillary has plagiarized Edwards, Carter, Dean, Kucinich, Obama, & Bill Clinton
Edited on Mon Feb-18-08 10:08 PM by Bleachers7
<snip>
For instance, I looked up Senator Clinton's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner speech from last week. Here's a particularly familiar line:

"Are you ready to take back the White House..."

That sounds an awful lot like this one:

"...and then we're going to Washington, D.C., to take back the White House! YAAARRR!"

She could easily have said, "Are you ready to reclaim the White House?" But instead, she used the same words made famous by Howard Dean four years ago.

But that's small-time. Here's a major problem for Senator Clinton's campaign if her staff and surrogates really want to engage in this so-called "plagiarism" debate. At the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, Senator Clinton employed what's called "anaphora" -- a common technique of repeating a word or phrase for emphasis in a speech:

I see an America where we stand up to the oil companies...

I see an America where where we say that 47 million people uninsured...

I see an America where where we have schools worthy...

I see an America where where college is affordable again...

And so forth. It was a seriously awesome section of her Jefferson-Jackson speech. It's a shame that (again, as long as the gloves are off and there has to be this ridiculous "plagiarism" debate) she lifted the "I see an America" anaphora from other politicians, including then-Governor Jimmy Carter. June, 1976:

I see an America poised not only at the brink of a new century, but at the dawn of a new era of honest, compassionate, responsive government.

I see an America with a tax system that does not steal from the poor and give to the rich.

I see an America a job for every man and woman who can work, and a decent standard of living for those who cannot.

I see an America in which my child and your child and every child receives an education second to none in the world.

I see an America in which Martin Luther King's dream is our national dream.

I see an America on the move again, united, its wounds healed, its head high, a diverse and vital nation, moving into its third century with confidence and competence and compassion, an America that lives up to the majesty of its Constitution and the simple decency of its people.

I also discovered that the "I see an America" line has been used by Congressman Kucinich:

I see an America where equal access and equal rights are obtained by all

And John Edwards with the "I see and America" anaphora:

I see an America where last year the CEO of one of the largest health insurance companies in America made hundreds of millions of dollars in one year. I see an America where ExxonMobil's profits were $40 billion just a couple of years ago. Record amounts, record profits.

Hell, a Republican running for Congress in the New York 20th named John Wallace used the "I see an America" anaphora (pdf file -- there's a whole page of it, but Wallace is not worth quoting here).

What's the next attack, then? Senator Obama stole his haircut from whoever? Senator Obama's gestures are lifted from what's his name? Seriously, is this what Howard Wolfson and Mark Penn have been reduced to? Senator Clinton, if you really want to win this thing, you need to fire these guys.
<snip>

http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20080218/cm_huffpost/087209

And then there's this gem. This was a mailer that was sent out to people in Wisconsin. Where did Hillary get the "Yes We Can" bit from?

P.S. did you know TV shows and movies about politicans can seem quite realistic precisely because they take a lot of the tried and true aphorisms and put them into a certain manner of delivery that convinces YOU THE AUDIENCE that they are a politician?

Well, this is the hair splitting that Hillary has reduced herself to. WHY? BECAUSE as FRONTRUNNER! She lost her MOJO and is running only on JOEMENTUM now.

And as much as Obama supporters would like to switch the point to plagiarism its really about Obama selling himself as a orator so brilliant that he can change the world when in fact he's just reading off lines.

This is why Obama supporters have to repeat the same trash 100s of times a night in here. They want to obscure what's really going on.

27. lololol. nice try. it's not words...it's belief.
that's why you don't get it.

"What the mind can concieve and believe...it can achieve."

Obama has already said it. This change isn't about him only. It's about a changed mindset with American people knowing the period of 50/50 voting, partisan rancor, middle of the road triangulation is over.

Clinton represents the fatigue and negativity of the past. Obama in his words and WAYS he engages people and answers even policy questions if you care to listen...is making people believe again.

As one Hillary advisor said, "How do you run against a movement?"

49. Those are just words, not beliefs
Triangulation is choosing a compromise point between two sides. Partisan rancor is refusing to compromise at all. The two are opposite and the only possibilities. How could the era of both be over? It makes no sense.

How can the era of 50/50 voting be over? Obama is close to 50/50 with Hillary right now.

I don't confuse fantasies with beliefs.

Repeating tired political cliches (and Mr. "Hope" is just guilty of that as Hillary) isn't the same a repeating, practically word for word, a quote from another politician.

But maybe they should rely on their own material and not take quotes from one another in the first place.

For the record, I didn't think it was a very good line in the first place or at least when Mr. "Hope" used it. His head has now apparently gotten so fat that he thinks he's on the same pedestal as JFK, MLK, FDR, and Thomas Jefferson.

Clinton Surrogate Compares Obama Ad to Nazi March
http://news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20080201/cm_thenation/45278988_1
Fri Feb 1, 2:23 PM ET

The Nation -- On a media conference call organized by the Hillary Clinton campaign today, Clinton surrogate Len Nichols compared an Obama health care ad to Nazis. The ad features a couple at a kitchen table, which some Clinton supporters said was reminiscent of "the famous insurance-industry-financed 'Harry and Louise' ads against the original Clinton plan," as The Politico reports, and Mr. Nichols said it "personally outraged" him.

Accusing political opponents of Nazism is an outrageous smear. Raising the specter of a Nazi march in response to a health care mailer that evokes the insurance industry is so absurd, it would be hard to take the attack seriously, were it not launched from a high profile national campaign conference call in this crucial stretch of the presidential race. And political observers know, of course, that the Clinton Campaign regularly arranges opportunities for surrogates to launch these kind of smears, which are later followed up with apologies. (See: Bob Johnson, Bill Shaheen, Bob Kerrey, and Francine Torge, to name the most recent offenders.) For his part, Nichols did not immediately return a call requesting further comment.
-------------------------
Len Nichols, Director of New America's Health Policy Program, stated, "For nearly 17 years I have worked tirelessly to reform our nation's struggling health system. Today my passion overwhelmed me. I chose an analogy that was wholly inappropriate. I am deeply sorry for any offense that my unfortunate comments may have caused. I made unfortunate comments that do not accurately reflect my bipartisan conviction, political philosophy, or most importantly, my opinions about Senator Obama and his historic campaign for the United States presidency."

Clinton adviser steps down after drug use comments
Earlier Thursday, Clinton personally apologized to rival Obama for Shaheen's remarks.

Obama accepted her apology, according to David Axelrod, the top political strategist for the Obama campaign.

KEENE, N.H. – John Edwards angrily took on Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton at two news conferences in a row on Sunday, saying that her campaign “doesn’t seem to have a conscience.”

COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton and her campaign tried to mend ties to black voters Thursday when a key supporter apologized to her chief rival, Barack Obama, for comments that hinted at Obama's drug use as a teenager. The candidate herself, meanwhile, praised the Rev. Martin Luther King and promised to assist with the rebirth of this troubled, largely black city.

Bob Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, apologized
for comments he made at a Clinton campaign rally in South Carolina on Sunday that hinted at Obama's use of drugs as a teenager.

Third Clinton Volunteer Knew Of Smear E-Mail

A third volunteer for Hillary Clinton's campaign was aware of a propaganda e-mail alleging that Barack Obama is a Muslim who plans on "destroying the U.S. from the inside out."

"Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential Candidacy," the email reads. "Please forward to everyone you know. The Muslims have said they Plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out, what better way to start than at The highest level."

Two Clinton volunteers, Linda Olson and Judy Rose, have already been asked to resign from the campaign for their roles in forwarding the e-mail.
The AP reported yesterday that Olson, a volunteer coordinator in Iowa County, sent a version of the e-mail to 11 people, including Ben Young, a regional field director for Chris Dodd's campaign. Young passed it on to the AP.

Bill Clinton Asks for a Second Chance

By Liz Halloran
Posted February 11, 2008

The morning after his wife, Hillary, was routed in three state contests by Sen. Barack Obama in their dead-heat battle for the Democratic nomination, former President Bill Clinton made his case for her before a packed Sunday service at one of the largest black churches in Washington, D.C.
But first he offered an apology of sorts for racially tinged comments he made about Obama and his candidacy that have triggered a backlash in the black community and among many other Democrats.

Clinton invoked his "worship of a God of second chances" in pronouncing himself glad to be at the Temple of Praise, which claims nearly 15,000 members. His invocation of second chances echoed comments he made early last week at black churches in California, where he campaigned for his wife before that state's Super Tuesday primary, which she won.

Bill Clinton To Apologize At LA Black Churches
Once again, Bill Clinton is ready to repent.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/02/bill-clinton-to-apologize_n_84573.html
On Sunday the former president is scheduled to visit black churches in South Central Los Angeles, where he's expected to offer a mea culpa to those who "dearly loved him" when he was their president, Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif.) says.

Watson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus who has endorsed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), tells us she'll usher the former president to more than half a dozen churches in her district where she says he needs to "renew his relationship" with congregants who were turned off by his racially tinged comments in the days leading up to and following the South Carolina primary. (Such as when Clinton compared Sen. Barack Obama's landslide victory to Jesse Jackson's wins in 1984 and 1988.)

Source: Hillary Adviser Harold Ickes Tells Surrogates To Refer To Super-Delegates As "Automatic Delegates"
By Greg Sargent - February 12, 2008, 11:43AM

In a sign that the spin war over the significance of super-delegates is underway in earnest, Harold Ickes told assorted Hillary supporters on a private conference call yesterday that the campaign wants them to start referring to super-delegates as "automatic delegates," according to someone on the call.

The person I spoke to paraphrases Ickes, who is spearheading Hillary's super-delegate hunt, this way: "We're no longer using the phrase super delegates. It creates a wrong impression. They're called automatic delegates. Because that's what they are."

The worry appears to be that the phrase "super-delegates" implies that "they have super-powers or super influence when they don't," the source says, describing Ickes' thinking. In other words, the phrase suggests that they have greater than average clout and that they have the power to overrule the democratic process, giving it the taint of back-room power politics

And, no. I don't think plagirism, under any circumstance, is EVER anything to be taken lightly.

23. She's copied from others repeatedly
I was out all day and will be out most of the week. But you did the exact thing I thought. I know she has lifted from Obama as well. At the end of one Nevada speech she used fired up and ready to go. She's used change rhetoric from others. There's lots of things. She shifts her entire campaign to copy Obama's. Everybody is. Change Change is all over the place.

58. Honestly, so do I.
It's more ridiculous bullshit. I really wonder what voters think. My wife saw the beginning of the story and she said "are you kidding me? Hillary is over the line."

She's pretty practical. I wonder if it will be seen the way my wife sees it or not.

78. It's getting pretty desperate when the "experience" candidate has to lift lines from a reactionary
right-winger like Pat Buchanan. But the "experience" candidate has proven herself to be a devout student of Pat's old boss Richard Nixon with her smears of Senator Obama, so I guess there's some symmetry there.
