2. The GOP is not in all that good a shape in New York, IMO. After 9/11
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 08:32 AM by Old Crusoe
it had two "stars" suddenly thrust into national profile -- George Pataki and Rudy Giuliani -- and both of them have bit the dust since, Pataki a case of "If a Republican presidential candidate drops out and no one notices..." and Giuliani in a humiliating and idiotic campaign strategy.

In the next election for the Governor's job, New Yorkers statewide chose a Democrat. In significant numbers.

There are two Democratic U.S. Senators and the Congressional delegation is likely to remain bluer than quite a few other states' delegations.

Blue New Yorkers aren't going to send John McCain to the White House, IMO.

3. Not doing well with link..Check the Saratogian.com..lead story..
Please consider the fact that NYS could be switching colors...YES, we did elect Spitzer (D) for govenor, and I think he has our best interests in his pocket but, he is not popular..one of the gov. that wanted to license(driver's) illegals...That move alone was very unpopular ..so don't discount the possibility that McCain will gain favor...It's not a "shoein"..As I said ...we've got to get it together soon...

couldn't have provided it, unless it was because the piece is so poorly written.

It's drive-through commentary and the editor should never have put it out there.

15. lots of Americans say, I vote for the 'best man.'
They do not like issues or ideology. They vote personalities. Don't think they can't be bamboozled by his persona of non partisanship. Lets work with the Democrats. Like Lieberman. Right. / Still ticket splitters will make New York Mostly blue. Its easier than studying issues. Balance off blue choice a with red choice b, just because we don't want to take a stand.

16. Some do vote that way, although I think many Independent voters in
NY and elsewhere would be strongly attracted to Obama as opposed to McCain.

18. I actually recall acquaintances saying
I balance my vote by voting one party for president, then senator - the other party; US Representative, the other party. and so on all the way down the ballot. That is nuts. They hardly ever investigated who was running for each slot.

19. Agree -- those voters are out there.
DU doesn't attract many of those kinds of voters, though, thank god.

And I'm not saying there aren't any voters like that in New York State. But I think Democrats will carry New York in November, enjoy many ballot-wide victories, and not least, will defeat McCain soundly.

6. Here's the link:
http://www.saratogian.com:80/WebApp/appmanager/JRC/BigDaily;jsessionid=3P14H6STnDXj2TWp01PT8qhNfZG8dM4cpC25W1skVQcSy9Dj1FtZ!-625106091?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pg_article&r21.pgpath=%2FTST%2FHome&r21.content=%2FTST%2FHome%2FTopStoryList_Story_1603386

Note how breezily the piece is written.

The author is a local analyst and I don't see a wealth of quotations and comments from state party officials.

Absent as well from the piece are insights and remarks-to-date on the state of the two parties' standings with voters, their operations in traditionally blue or red pockets of the state, and so forth.

The article's premise is that McCain is competitive, but the headline should probably have been a question, something like "Is McCain competitive?" --with a more careful set of instances and commentary from varying viewpoints. Profs of political science at various New York Universities might have spiced the piece up considerably, plus given it some perspective.

And not least, both Obama and native daughter Clinton would defeat McCain in New York were the election held today, which the piece oddly does not dwell on.

7. Still waiting for link

I don't know if this is a serious statewide poll, a local poll, an opinion piece, wishful thinking by some editorial board, etc.

13. I'm thinking the New York TIMES is on sale in the Saratoga area.
This piece from the SARATOGIAN is a strong incentive to pick up the TIMES instead.
