Hillary "Take Back America" - taken from Pat Buchanan "Take Back America"
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 12:39 PM by sloppyjoe25s
Is it hypocrisy for Mrs. Clinton's campaign to try to mud sling at Obama calling him a "plagarist" - for quoting a friend who was himself openly quoting famous historical figures - when she herself stole:

"Take Back America"

from former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan - who made the phrase the signature of his 1992 bid?

http://www.4president.org/speeches/buchanan1992announcement.htm

Is this pure desperation at this point in Mrs. Clinton's campaign?

Please K&R if you think this is desperation in Camp Clinton.

3. Will this strategy have legs?
I am amazed at how much mud she is trying to sling.

But i was also curious that the media did not point out the obivious rip-offs that Mrs. Clinton has in her speeches.

I think a Wisconsin win for Obam might break the back of this attack - but will the mud slinging then end from Mrs. Clinton's side?

2. Pat Buchanan took it from Jerry Brown's 1992 campaign
That's the first I heard it, but it may be older even that that.

4. Do you have a link?
Thanks, I suspected it could be even older than Buchanan.

13. No, I don't have a link - I was there!
It was a great campaign - Jerry rode around in a small mini-van, only took $100 contributions from individuals - no corporate donations, was the first candidate to have a 1-800 number for campaign donations (this was before the internet was up and running), he spoke out roundly against corporate greed and the influece of lobbyists and corporate money in politics.

It was the "Take Back America" campaign with a campaign slogan of "Restore Humility to Government". He ran in all the states and DID NOT drop out when Clinton collected enough delegates to win the nomination. We went to the state conventions and platform committee meetings and the party convention and were able to win some influence based on the number of delegates Jerry won.

It was a terrific truly-progressive campaign.

THE 1992 CAMPAIGN: Democrats; Brown, Seeing His Role as Savior, Runs to 'Take Back America'
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E0CE6DB1238F934A25751C0A964958260
--------

When he announced his intention to run for president against President George H.W. Bush, many in the media and his own party dismissed his campaign as an ego-trip with little chance of gaining significant support. Ignoring them, Brown embarked on an ultra-grassroots campaign to, in his words, "take back America from the confederacy of corruption, careerism, and campaign consulting in Washington". To the surprise of many, Brown was able to tap a populist streak in the Democratic Party, a feat that many would later see as the precursor to the 2004 presidential campaign of Governor Howard Dean and to the 2008 presidential campaign of Senator John Edwards

8. Isn't that the point?
For her campaign to try to spin this as some big "act of plagarism"

is pretty desperate? Can you admit that even as a Clinton supporter? I just talked to a Clinton die-hard friend on the phone and she saw it as a prety desperate sign. Everyone knows these words are re-cycled dozens of times.

But Mrs. Clinton tried to make this a "big deal" -- even when many of her phrases are "borrowed"

11. Did you know that slaves and abolitionists used it as a password
along the Underground Railroad?

To me this whole business about who said what first is absurd. But some of the history of these things is interesting.

12. The whole thing is absurd and reminds me of the Simpsons.
There is an episode where two aliens take the form Clinton & Dole and campaign against each other using a mismash of past speeches.

My fellow Americans. As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball, but
tonight I say, we must move forward, not backward, upward not forward,
and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.

16. So interesting that Hillary Clinton is now using the campaign slogan
from her husband's rival in the 1992 election - Jerry Brown! He ran his entire 1992 campaign on the theme of "Take Back America".
