I'm from Ireland originally, so this issue is important to me.

I think reform of immigration is important, but I've been so sick of the silly 'deport them all!!!' nonsense from some conservatives. the last time anyone tried deporting people by the millions was in Germany during the early 40s. I respect Obama for taking the issue on directly and talking common sense and fairness.

Sat down with real folks that were having problems with their mortgage companies and talked with folks from a group that is helping them to keep their houses. Very attentive and good follow up comments/questions.

Q: Here in San Antonio, we get a lot of wounded soldiers. At the Intrepid Center, they work to rehabilitate soldiers. We have perhaps the highest survival rate of any war now, but so many of them are horribly disabled, some with large parts of their heads missing. We’re facing the baby boom bubble that will soon affect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and we’re getting hundreds of these soldiers that will require intense medical care for the rest of their lives. How will we pay for it all?

A: Yes, that is one reason this war will end up costing us $1 trillion and probably two because of all the payments that will have to be made for these disabilities. We are going to have to care for them and we have a solemn obligation to do it. It is not an option.

This is why we need to be a lot better at controlling costs. We are going to have to tighten things up and that’s one of the reasons why health care reform is so important, because it is gobbling up the biggest portion of the federal budget.

Q: When you go to the Rio Grande Valley, you will face questions because the area has a great many veterans for whom the Veterans Administration is their only health care. Yet the closest VA hospitals are here in San Antonio. They have to travel upwards of 200 miles to get care.

A: If they have to drive five or six hours for full care I am glad I have learned about it because I want to fully investigate this.
