Obama's Letters for Rezko
http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/425305,CST-NWS-obama13.article

As a state senator, Barack Obama wrote letters to city and state officials supporting his political patron Tony Rezko's successful bid to get more than $14 million from taxpayers to build apartments for senior citizens. The deal included $855,000 in development fees for Rezko and his partner, Allison S. Davis, Obama's former boss, according to records from the project, which was four blocks outside Obama's state Senate district. Obama's letters, written nearly nine years ago, for the first time show the Democratic presidential hopeful did a political favor for Rezko -- a longtime friend, campaign fund-raiser and client of the law firm where Obama worked -- who was indicted last fall on federal charges that accuse him of demanding kickbacks from companies seeking state business under Gov. Blagojevich.

<snip>

Rezko backed Obama's election to the Illinois Senate in 1996, his successful re-election bids and his 2004 election to the U.S. Senate. Obama's relationship with Rezko dates to the senator's days as a student at Harvard Law School, when Rezko offered him a job, which Obama turned down.

<snip>

New Kenwood LLC also got letters of support from Obama, who represented a nearby Senate district.
"I am writing in support of the New Kenwood LLC's proposal to build a ninety-seven unit apartment building at 48th and Cottage Grove for senior citizens,'' Obama wrote in separate letters, each dated Oct. 28, 1998, to city and state housing officials. "This project will provide much needed housing for Fourth Ward citizens.''
(Put the poor on tainted land to help a friend's real estate deal...:eyes:)
Rezko and Davis paid the city $1 for the land and spent more than $100,000 to clean it up, including the removal of an underground storage tank. Some tainted land was left behind, but state environmental officials approved construction after Rezko and Davis agreed to cover the polluted areas with parking lots, sidewalks or three feet of dirt, records show.

The $14.6 million Cottage View Terrace was funded entirely by city, state and federal taxpayers.
------------------------

Obama's involvement with Rezko goes deeper than
the land deal.

4. If you guys continually bring up 15 year old issues
to bash Clinton with, what's wrong with a 8-month article referencing a situation that's still in the news?

15. Don't be a fool
explain why an 8-month old article is too old to be considered, but you guys keep bringing up 15-year old issues?

6. Still relevant unless you
want to rewrite history. You cannot
claim there is nothing to the link between
Rezko and Obama unless you totally ignore
the facts outlined in the linked article.
No need for me to 'try again'. These facts
have the chance of being spot-lighted in the
upcoming trial, which would not be good publicity
for Obama.

Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 07:53 PM by BeatleBoot
It's all fair game.

Hope Obama is ready. Because this is "velvet gloves time" right now.

I sense a whole lot of political nasty will be blowing his way.

13. Obama has been handled in the press with kid gloves,
and I honestly think it is due to fears of
the press being labled as racist more than
anything else. Everyone expects the press to
talk crap about the Clintons and the Republicans
but, to air speculative spin stories on the
first African-American candidate could be death
to a journalist's career if they were labled
racist.

5. it's information people will be aware of one way or the other
better to air out this smelly laundry in the Primary rather than jam one's fingers in one's ears, sing LA-LA-LA-LA-LA really loud and hope no one asks about the overflowing laundry basket in the corner.

Between this and his growing Plagiarism Press, it's looking as if Barack's halo is slipping. At least that's what Gallup thinks with his 7 point loss in their daily tracking poll. He and Hillary are back in a dead-heat.

10. I think he and his campaign are dishonest. We shall see. It will come out in the GE.
There are already nasty things starting that I heard on the radio the other day. I won't repeat such things about any Democrat, and I don't believe them. He isn't as honest as he portrays himself though I am convinced of that..

16. Yup it will. This bizarre world we are in. It is ok for Obama to say or do anything. Hillary can't
even campaign because it's an ATTACK on Obama. He has fooled a lot of people. It shows that Democrats think they're so smart and savvy, but they don't look below the surface either. It might end the dream.

That's if he wins the primary.

He'll be politically radioactive if he makes the primarythen loses.

It is getting more and more difficult to think about ever supporting him. I don't think he operates at a level any higher than that of the majority of his supporters on this board.

19. I have no idea what you are talking about.
If you notice, I generally do not
devolve into the 'Emocratic' poster.
I may state opinions but, I try to
keep feelings out of it. There is
no joy in some one getting indicted.
I just want to point out that there
is more to the Rezko/Obama relationship
than the Obama supporters seem to think.

21. Is this the Same Rezko That was Photoed Between A Smiling Bill and Hillary Clinton?
Just wondering?

For all of you not from Illinois, and may not be following the details of this case, there is as much criminal malfeasance in the Rezko deal as there was in the "Whitewater" deal, which if I remember correctly was exactly nothing. This is a Republican talking point, it belongs on the "Freeper network.

24. exactly. he supported low income housing for seniors in an
impoverished neighborhood. 9 years before there was a wiff of scandal. his fees are in line with construction management contracts anywhere that i know of.
tony rexko supported pretty much every democratic politician in the state of illinois. and he has not been convicted of anything. obama's dealings with him predate his indictment by at least a year.
you are right. democrats should stop slopping around in this mud puddle.

Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 09:42 PM by mikekohr
And I admit it has the same degree of criminality as Whitewater. NONE! Whitewater was a 7 year, 70 million dollar witch-hunt that distracted the nation while Bin Laden plotted and schemed. Let's do that again. It worked out so well last time.
