Hillary actually DID work in a fish processing factory - don't know which shift, though
This is from Wikipedia. She spent time one summer washing dishes and working in a cannery. So it's actually possible she did work a night shift.

I do know that seasonal fishing work in Alaska is HARD. I know several people who have done so (I'm in Washington). Looks as if she tried to keep the company honest, too.

"Rodham returned to Wellesley, and wrote her senior thesis about the tactics of radical community organizer Saul Alinsky under Professor Schechter (which, years later while she was First Lady, was suppressed at the request of the White House and became the subject of speculation as to its contents).<26> In 1969, Rodham graduated with departmental honors in political science. Stemming from the demands of some students,<27> she became the first student in Wellesley College history to deliver their commencement address.<25> Her speech received a standing ovation lasting seven minutes.<22><28><29> She was featured in an article published in Life magazine, due to the response to a part of her speech that criticized Senator Edward Brooke, who had spoken before her at the commencement;<8> she also appeared on Irv Kupcinet's nationally-syndicated television talk show as well as in Illinois and New England newspapers.<30> That summer, she worked her way across Alaska, washing dishes in Mount McKinley National Park and sliming salmon in a fish processing cannery in Valdez (which fired her and shut down overnight when she complained about unhealthy conditions).<31>"[32

4. Read the Wikipedia entry - she is a worker
I've worked hard most of my life, too, but I never worked in a fish factory.

3. Actually, it was more than washing dishes, she had to gut fish.
At least some of the time on that job.

So she's got more grit than I do, that's for sure.

8. Two different jobs. One washing dishes, one gutting fish. She's got grit.

20. Grit indeed. She never has been reluctant to roll up her sleeves and jump in.
She seems to be of the personality-type that does that.

I've worked nights myself. My first paying job, in fact!

22. She can take a punch, too
I'm always amazed at how people say the most insulting things right to her face, and she lets it roll right off.

5. don't want to speculate...just curious...
"...(which, years later while she was First Lady, was suppressed at the request of the White House and became the subject of speculation as to its contents)."

On the other hand, she probably wrote the thesis by herself, no plagiarizing...which means they had to SUPPRESS HER OWN WORDS.

9. LOL, I am, aren't I?
I've had a variety of jobs over the years (the ones I loved most, working in a book store and at a daycare center didn't pay enough, alas).

I did manual labor one summer after high school, building trails. I liked it, but I'll never forget the first day when I didn't use the work gloves, and my hands stung from the cuts I got cutting brush with a sickle.

I also found out that the sickles they provide on the work site are made for right handers.......

16. And years of fixing sandwiches at the Bingo Hall to raise money for the young Dems
(me, not her). Talk about smoke-filled rooms. I must have made a thousand ham sandwiches and 2000 pots of coffee over the years. Ever worked in a place where your customers were mostly really old ladies wearing pots of makeup with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths, demanding coffee and M&Ms at 11:00 at night? When you were fifteen? LOLOL. I guess I do have an interesting work history.

21. Actually, I do like to, and I am in a writer's group.
This would be a good topic for us. I once delivered a free local paper for two weeks for a friend whose back was hurting. It was very embarrassing to me for some reason - I hated it. Half the places didn't even want the paper and got angry when I showed up with more. But there was one that did like it - a local bar, where they anxiously awaited the paper so they could read the police beat stories to each other (kind of bar where the patrons were all regularly gathered by about 3:00 in the afternoon.....)

10. Here:
Jay Carson, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, told The Caucus that line does not refer to any hourly paid job Mrs. Clinton has held. Instead, it’s a “rhetorical reference” to her long nights as a lawyer, First Lady and now as a senator. “She is certainly known for her work ethic,” he said.

11. I said I didn't know the shift!
Just that she worked in a factory, and can completely relate to shift work.

13. I truly do respect Clinton's resume- but her work at the factory was a choice
Not that that makes it any less hard as far as physical work goes. Nevertheless, it's good she got to see what it's like to work in such places.

15. I never knew about this part of her early life
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 08:13 PM by goodgd_yall
I knew about the senior thesis but not about working in Alaska and being fired for sticking up for workers.

One of the reasons I prefer Hillary over Obama is her experience---and I mean life experience. She's been through many challenges and difficulties. You can't survive them without becoming smarter and wiser. And somehow, I just feel more comfortable with someone who has been tested as she has.

I have a friend who worked in the canneries in Alaska too. I always admired the spunk and sense of adventure it took to do that.

25. I heard her say that her parents helped her through college
but she had to work and put herself through law school. I love to hear her talk, she's really interesting. She's so knowledgeable about so many subjects.

24. Hey, I worked in a fruit cannery for 8 summers, swing shift...
and I'm going for Obama.

I guess "I worked in a cannery" is not a guaranteed winning message. If it were, I would run for prez.
