In other threads, they may be tearing each other apart. We're sitting around the campfire singing.

12. Proposal: Let's retire that f'n song from Presidential Politics.
If I hear Norah O'Donnell invoke "Kumbaya" one more time, I'm going to have to hurt her.

Maybe because I've been singing it since my parents sent me off to Hippie Summer Camp in the late 70's? ;-)

23. Take pity on those of us who never got the chance to go to Hippie Summer Camp.
We can only sigh wistfully and wonder how amazing it would have been to have been a hippie back in the day.

I had more than my fair share of Kumbaya at a fundy church camp I attened over several summers... ugh...

25. There's a vicious rumor that I broke a few...
but not over heads;)

My favorite guitar shop has a sign that says: "No Stairway Allowed". I've always wanted to take a sharpie to it to add Kumbaya!

Damn fundy church camp scarred me for life!

28. We sang it as part of the peace movement in the late 60's
I had no idea it was now a symbol of hatred instead of love.

And now this!

I think it was just over-done... and too many RW Christians who don't walk the talk chant it too.

35. Christ, lighten up, please. People are just saying they're sick of it just like they would
about ANY song they'd heard eighteen thousand times.

It's not like people are attacking MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech, here. They're just saying they're sick of hearing a SONG.

(And tell me you don't cringe every time you're at a wedding, and the band or DJ cranks up "That Old Time rock and Roll" or "New York, New York")

36. Haven't sang it in about 40 years
I was reminiscing and you're telling me to "lighten up Harold"

Guess I don't live in an area where Kumbaya is recited except during historical peace movements - who knew it was a pop wonder and would cause some to make violent jokes about it.

34. Hilarious!
When I was twelve and picked up the guitar, I learned five chords... and I could play all the Peter Paul and Mary catalog... plus Creedence... plus Neil Diamond... and a lot of The Beatles... I was overjoyed!

I'm not twelve anymore, dammit:) Wish I were... those were simpler times... before I started analyzing lyrics!

18. Swing loooooow, sweet chaaaarioooooot
This atheist went to a Jesus-y camp once when I was a kid. Why? ... They had HORSES there. Horses trumped the annoying Jesus talk for me....So I can sing a couple of churchy tunes myself. None of the godly talk stuck to me, though. If anything, I came out even more of an atheist.

So rise and shine
and give god your glory, glory

26. Ah, but there's nothing wrong with those "churchy tunes" (at least to me;
I'm not at ALL religious, but I do like to listen to some Gospel now and again).

It's at least honest to (some or most of) the people who sing it. Not such utter pablum as "Kumbaya."
