The news outlets were right to cut to Obama when he started his speech.
Hillary was not giving a concession speech. She was delivering her stump speech and could have gone on for an hour.

Obama won tonight. He's won the last nine contests, which means that she's had the peak of prime-time to deliver the first (losing) speech for the last few weeks. Also, Obama is the clear front-runner.

The news outlets were justified in switching to him. No question about it. And I say that as someone who doesn't have a preference between the two.

7. Has she delivered one lately? I mean, a real concession speech?
The impression I've been getting, from watching her recent speeches on election night, is that she pretty much ignores the outcome of that day's contest(s) and just holds a rally.

9. She's just like Bush..
... she never admits a mistake and she never acknowledges the 800lb gorilla sitting in the voting booth.

2. And by switching to Obama, the networks are denying Clinton
free airtime, and I think it was the right thing to do.

12. And he's given up a lot of free primetime air time waiting for the others
remember how Huckabee, for example, started speaking so early on Super Tuesday? It was all about getting primetime exposure. No reason Obama should continue giving that up, waiting for others to finish.

14. That's a key point
Obama has routinely given very late speeches. Why should he wait tonight, especially when Clinton is not giving a concession speech?

10. I'm not surprised about the complaints.
The chief strategy of The Clintons' campaign is to play victim at every turn. Tonight's complaints from supporters of The Clintons is just more of the same.

15. Yes, but I see it more as Clinton suporters are in shock, they actually believe
Hillary has a right to always be giving preference, which is totally ridiculous. If it was Huckabee getting cut off by McCain, they wouldn't see a problem with that!

I think it's really indicative of the way Clinton supporters see this election, they really do believe Hillary is entitled to the nomination

11. Yes. I agree.
Thanks for your reasoned post. It's such a silly thing for posters to be concerned about in many ways -- when we have so many more important things to be concerned about.

17. Plus so often her speeches are terribly presented
Last time I tried to watch her afte one of the primaries (I think it was one that she had won!) she was shuffling the paper of the speech and after every sentence, her facial expression seemed to be: "More of this and I'll die!"

It has never occurred to her that maybe she doesn't need to give a speech - I think everyone would be better off if she'd just express one or two things off the top of her head and at least look a bit sincere.

20. Obama says :When I am President, WE will do this"
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 10:39 PM by truedelphi
And from his inflection you know he doesn't mean the "imperial" we.

She says "When I am President "I" will" do such and so.

We already have a President in the WH who is overly fond of "I"

Right now, "I" am so glad about how this is all shaking out but hope that "We don't get fooled
again."

that is a good way to listen to what they are saying without distractions. He is asking people of something. That is evident.

27. I saw Michelle O on Larry King (Don't watch King often but was glad
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 11:47 PM by truedelphi
To have a chance to find out what makes her tick)

I was very pleased with her answers to his questions about the Clintons and the rivalry between Camps O & C.

She said, "Well Larry, when I address a crowd, I think about the needs of the crowd - I don't think about the score with the Clintons." (I am paraphrasing, but that's the sentiment)

So it strikes me that both Obmamas have an inner guidance on being a good if not great speaker - the first rule of speaking is that you follow what is in your environment - especially your audience. I haven't heard M. Speak to a crowd bet, but she has to be at least *good* as she knows this inner rule.

And he of course transcends good - he is awesome, no two ways about it.

Why should Obama's audience have to wait because Hillary's running behind schedule?
