**Official Happy Victory Thread** Do Not Come In If You Cannot Handle It.
I just wanted to start this thread to say how fucking glad I am about the way this is working out.

I started out as an Edwards supporter who was really politically policy-wise a Kucinich-supporter. I was attracted to Edwards zeal to correct economic imbalance vis a vis corporate power.

Obama drew me in with his ability to lead, inspire and draw people from all sides to him. I now am strongly behind him and am so happy to see that he is winning and that his winning represents what it does -hope.

Hope -the desire to make this country into what it once was. I am inspired and so are millions of others. THAT is what will bring about the change. Not Obama, but the people's desire for change.

We did it. We are doing it. Fucking hoo-ray!

3. Off to the greatest -- congrats Obamanauts!
Gotta say, the guy is definitely growing on me. He's run one helluva campaign.

Very impressive win in my home state! This almost makes up for the Clintons crushing Jerry Brown in the '92 WI primary. Almost...

You should know, Curtis Mayfield was from Chicago (as is the good Senator), not Detroit, and "Move on Up" was not Motown, but rather released on Curtis' own Curtom Records...don't sell your town short! ;-)

Move on Up

Hush now child,
and don't you cry
Your folks might understand you
by and by
Move on up
towards your destination
You may find
from time to time
Complications

Bight your lip
and take a trip
Though there may be
wet road ahead
You cannot slip
So move on up
and peace you will find
Into the steeple
of beautiful people
Where there's only one kind

So hush now child
and don't you cry
Your folks might understand you
by and by
Just move on up
and keep on wishing
Remember your dreams
are your only schemes
So keep on pushing
Take nothing less -
not even second best
And do not obey -
you must have your say
You can past the test

Move on up!

85. i know that. just making the comparison.
he does play 'signed, sealed, delivered' at the end of speeches, and other such oldies at rallies and on the bus.
i think that people should consider that, as they would how he dresses, how he wears his hair, how he choses to present himself to us. us boomers should be grabbin. that.

We achieved a great victory tonight. The momentum is still with the Obama campaign. However, everyone knows it's easier to fight your way to the top than it is to stay there. On that note, I think the Obama campaign needs to do a few things to continue ensuring primary victories:

  • Obama needs a new speech. I saw the speech in Houston, and while he started off very strong, with a very captive and enthusiastic audience, he sort of lost them for a 5-10 minute period. I think part of it is because they (and we) have heard a lot of these lines before ("I'm Running Because of, as Dr. King said, the Fierce Urgency of Now" "The Kindergarten Papers," etc. - that should be retired at this point). Specifics are good and he should keep some. But this was sort of a victory rally and it should have been more "rah-rah" and less "laundry list." He should save the laundry list for later on in the race - maybe Dallas.

  • And on that new speech - he needs to share more of himself with voters who really want to know more about him. Maybe he can work in how he made it through school and tie that to his plan ensuring more students who can afford college. Tell the story of how he and Michelle met; their own financial struggles and how he knows what it's like to not have enough money to pay the bills.

  • Let Michelle take Cindy McCain on. Yes, this is a risky move, but I think Michelle can take her on and win BIG. This will address the whole "really proud" issue and allow Michelle to score points with feminists and working class women.

  • Make sure every supporter has, and reviews, a handy fact-sheet about Mr. Obama's accomplishments. Have a variety of different fact-sheets tailored to specific regions and disseminate them based on the supporter's geographical location.

Right now, Obama is in a good position. There's no way he can go back to underdog status at this point. He is the front-runner and now he's got to walk in it. He needs to frame his message in the context of a general election against McCain. McCain should be the number one enemy; not Clinton. Yes, Clinton will go negative and he should have his rapid response team on standby to address those issues as they arise, but he shouldn't get caught up in it. He's got to stay "above the fray" right now. Folks are seeing him as a real contender and they aren't wondering if he's better than Clinton so much as they are seeing how he measures up against McCain. He's got to make the case that he can beat McCain and beat him decisively. If he looks like a winner, people (including the party leaders and superdelegates) will migrate to him naturally.

That being said, GoBama!

60. You are absolutely right. People *are* watching his speeches.
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 01:30 AM by Tatiana
When Obama came on tonight EVERY network cut away from Clinton's speech. Even her surrogate pointed this out after she had to wait through Obama's speech on MSNBC. I kept waiting for them to cut away from the speech (as we've all heard it before), but they broadcast the thing in its entirety.

Hillary took the first shot when she said that words don't matter. Obama asserted that they did, and now he's got to back up that assertion. Hillary's camp scored a minor point when they started complaining that Obama was all talk, but no specifics. So then he started lining his speeches with all the specifics and details of his plans, but did you notice that in Clinton's speech tonight she told us to go to hillaryclinton.com to find out the details and specifics of her plans? That's because laundry lists of policies bore people to death. They want the cliff-notes sound-byte version and that's what Obama was giving people in the beginning and that's what, in part, propelled him to the success he currently enjoys.

If we really wanted to know the details about Obama's plans we WOULD go to his website and look it up. People aren't listening to his speeches for his policies so much as they like his inspirational speaking style and he makes them feel good. Yes, just like a pastor and as a former Southern Baptist, I know this plays well in the Bible Belt. That is why you have mega-churches like the Potter's House in Dallas, Cornerstone in San Antonio, Lakewood in Houston. (And on a side note, there is NOTHING wrong with courting these people. They are voters too and better have them vote for us than vote for the Republicans.)

So Hillary got Obama off his game for a moment. Save the policy specifics for the debates and town halls. That is where he will get the most mileage out of nailing her on social security, predatory lending, and health insurance mandates. I'm hoping he re-tools and gets back to what got him where he is. He can put this thing away with a good showing in Texas.

90. Agreed.
I got bored watching the speech. I'd heard too much of it before. Certain parts do need to be retired, I think. Your other points are all good, as well. I like his rapid-response team so far, I think he's doing fine, AND staying above the fray for the most part. Michelle can swat Cindy McCain, I think - she's classy, down-to-earth, and very intelligent.

Thus far, he not only looks like a winner, he looks PRESIDENTIAL to me, and he needs to stay that way. The Clinton campaign may make it difficult, but he's on the right track, and it seems the more negative they go, the better he does.

71. A wonderful night.
I was nervous all day. I started doubting whether he'd pull it out, thinking Clinton's last ditched effort to attack Obama would work. Then I started seeing the exit polling data and I felt really good. When the news started and they said they had one call to make and one indication and called it for McCain, I felt uneasy, but soon after was relieved to hear Obama had a substantial lead.

I did not expect a 17 point win. I thought the best case scenario would be 10 points for Obama, but set myself up to expect a far closer night -- one that would drag on for a few hours.

How glad I'm wrong and now the message moves to Texas and Ohio.

YES, WE CAN!

80. The last time I felt this way was in Oct. of 1992.
Every once in a while the American people surprise me with their ability to vote for their own best interests (and not for their fears and prejudices). This feels like 1992. I am quite hopeful.

84. I am elated. Wisconsin was great, but when I saw the Hawaii
numbers my jaw hit the floor. I know it's his home state, but those are foolish numbers. It feels so good to be "for" someone rather than voting against someone.
