Dennis Kucinich and John Edwards received an insufficient number of votes to qualify for a delegate.

if Chelsea did not go there? I'm so happy that Hawaii stood by him in the end. I admit I was getting nervous when I heard about the senator being for Clinton and that he had a lot of pull.

I think the margin would have been bigger if the voting window had been bigger. It's not Iowa style. I think several thousand people probably turned away or left before voting because of parking and the crowds. If it had been a primary it may have been even more dramatic.

The joke that you found so humorous was "he beat her like he was Ike Turner." Serial adultery was not the subject at hand. Although adultery can certainly be construed as abuse (we agree on that point), I don't think it could be considered physical abuse, at least not the kind that leaves one with the cuts, bruises, and broken bones that Tina suffered at the hands of Ike.

And your flippant response "Hillary knows" suggests that Hillary suffered this same kind of abuse at the hands of Bill. If so, where's your proof of that?

There's nothing wrong with my sense of humor. We agree that it was an off-color joke, but I feel it was in poor taste. Laughing at that joke is equivalent to laughing at physical abuse, and having suffered through that personally, I can tell you that it is no laughing matter.

Nice strawman, I never made that claim. They're both equally bad, and wrong. But that never was the point I was trying to make. I never disagreed with you that adultery is emotional abuse.

You said "Hillary knows" in response to a joke about Ike beating Tina. I asked you to elaborate on how Hillary knows the same physical abuse that Tina suffered, and you conflated the issue by talking about Bill's adultery. That's called changing the subject, which made me question your reading comprehension. I only asked you to provide proof of the claim that "Hillary knows" the kind of abuse that Tina suffered at the hands of Ike, and you have yet to do so.

Again, nothing wrong with my sense of humor, there are just things that are simply not funny. Beating someone up, just because you're in a position of power and you think you can get away with it, is one of those areas that I don't find humorous. At all. And if someone gets their kicks by such a thing, I will call them on it. I don't understand how that can be construed as political correctness. I'm not stopping you from laughing, or even saying that you can't, I'm just challenging you to be introspective and consider why you think that such a joke would be funny.

we had never had more than about 5,000 before.

Let me tell you, it was ugly. Just ugly. Dozens of us were milling around one tiny little table trying to find our precinct. No one even checked my name off a list of voters; all I did was brandish the Dem party form I'd downloaded from their site (during the few minutes yesterday that it wasn't crashed) and someone directed me to (one can only hope) the correct precinct table.

There we sat, in full view of several signs supporting one particular candidate (remember, this is a caucus, not an election, so it wasn't against the law, just unethical), for 25 minutes. Then came the announcement: Surprise! They didn't have enough ballots! The few they did have were quickly snapped up as though they were tickets on the last train out of Berlin. Twenty more minutes later (bearing in mind there's a Kinko's right down the street), another shipment arrived -- of different ballots! (the first batch had a space for congressional district; these did not).

No one made sure that somebody didn't "cock-a-roach" two or three ballots by sleight of hand, or for that matter, that they weren't all distributed to people wearing the "right" stickers. For that matter, the "ballot box" consisted of a manila envelope somebody was holding. Nothing actually happened, I don't think (seeing as how the victorious candidate's people ran out of stickers, right before they got to me), but the potential was certainly there.

And my caucus site was relatively mellow! The sites were based on state House districts. Mine, at a large middle school, served only one district. Another middle school across town, Kawananakoa, served three. It has been reported that voters there were reduced to simply writing their choice out on sheets of blank paper (Kinko's, you see, is a mile or so from there). Had my boss not left early for our upcoming D.C. trip, that's where she would have been -- with her mobility scooter and service dog. That could have gotten interesting...

Now you know how a state with about a 3-1 Dem registration edge came to have a repuke governor: organization, or more precisely, the lack thereof. On the bright side, we did register 10 or 15,000 new Dem voters in one night! :bounce:

As we talk, the crowd grows. By 6:30 p.m., the line is snaking a quarter-mile past the cafeteria door. I can't see where it ends. It doesn't take the best political team on television to confirm that the turnout tonight is record-breaking for the state. In 2004, 4,000 Hawaii Democrats cast their ballots for John Kerry, already the presumptive nominee. This year, between Feb. 6 and Feb. 15, the Democratic Party of Hawaii registered about 5,000 new Democrats. Previously, the total for the whole party was 20,000.

The party got so overwhelmed by all this interest that at the end of last week, it shut down new registration until caucus night. Much easier to allow first-time Democrats to fill out a "wiki-wiki" voter-registration form and/or join the Democratic Party on the spot. Right?

Um, no. By 6:50 p.m., with countless fire-code violations in evidence inside the cafeteria, school officials decide to open up the auditorium to District 26. As this even-larger space fills up, one enterprising voter-turned-volunteer (loads of these tonight) takes the auditorium stage and begins calling out street names in an effort to corral the confused masses into the right precincts. (Each district is broken up into about six to eight smaller precincts.) "Magellan—over here! Punchbowl—stand by the exit sign! Ward Avenue—to the back!"

This system soon disintegrates, leaving District 26ers to throng back into the cafeteria to locate their precincts on a specially marked street map. Or to improvise, as in the case of one voter who frantically starts looking up his neighbors' precincts on his iPhone.

Wait a minute. They got to use the school copier? We (about three miles across town) sure as hell didn't! And they had sign-in lists? What the hell are those? Wait -- I did see something that looked like a list going around. It just never got to me...
