Thousands march in Prairie View for voting rights

By HELEN ERIKSEN
Houston Chronicle

PRAIRIE VIEW — More than 1,000 Prairie View A&M students turned out on Tuesday to march in support of their voting rights.

The marchers said Prairie View student voting rights have been suppressed for decades in Waller County.

The protesters carried "Register to Vote" signs and wore black shirts with the slogan, "It is 2008 and we will vote.

"I was angry after registering to vote in the 2006 election only to be turned away at the voting booth," said sophomore Dee Dee Williams.

The march began at 9 a.m. as the protesters left the campus on the seven-mile journey to the Waller County Courthouse in Hempstead.

1. This is what Democracy *should* look like!
Maybe it is going to look like this again.

2. I understand your point, realpolitik re: 'This is what Democracy *should* look like!'
But, I have to disagree a bit -- Democracy *should* be having easy access for all in our voting system, as well as guaranteeing our votes are actually counted.

7. I heard an author remark on Bush's remark, "Freedom is a gift from God."
He commented that it sounds trite but has the profound implication that freedom is a natural state of affairs. In fact it isn't, it takes hard work to win, maintain and extend freedom.

So I'm afraid that one way or another, here or elsewhere, this shit will always be happening.

16. Right you are
and when it gets subverted, loud noises and unpleasant turns of phrase should happen.

6. Yes.
To make the point, yes.
If I had to do it in order to vote, yes.

If it was just 7 miles away and I had a car and there was no reason to complain? No.

I'm glad to see them calling so much attention to this!!

in the process is making a huge difference. It is their future, and I am thrilled to see this. Looks like stupid Americans, are not so stupid after all.

11. Unbelieable as it is the real story of what is happening is being underreported
Our congressional district - a very safe republican district has atleast 10 volunteers who have already left to work in Texas for the duration.

In 30 years they will still be writing dissertations about this election.

15. Well, God damn. Thanks for posting that. Helps restore my faith in America, it does.
Out of all the inspiring things I've seen in this election, the most inspiring thing, hands down, has been the increase in involvement by young Americans.

Oh, yes. Yes, indeed.
