When the Magic Fades Obama Goes POOF!...and you are left with O.C.S. ..
At first it seemed like a few random cases of lassitude among Mary Chapin Carpenter devotees in Berkeley, Cambridge and Chapel Hill. But then psychotherapists began to realize patients across the country were complaining of the same distress. They (Obama supporters) were experiencing the first hints of what’s bound to be a national phenomenon: "Obama Comedown Syndrome".

The afflicted had already been through the phases of Obama-mania — fainting at rallies, weeping over their touch screens while watching Obama videos, spending hours making folk crafts featuring Michelle Obama’s face. These patients had experienced intense surges of hope-amine, the brain chemical that fuels euphoric sensations of historic change and personal salvation.

But they found that as the weeks went on, they needed more and purer hope-injections just to preserve the rush. They wound up craving more hope than even the Hope Pope could provide, and they began experiencing brooding moments of suboptimal hopefulness. Anxious posts began to appear on the Yes We Can! Facebook pages. A sense of ennui began to creep through the nation’s Ian McEwan-centered book clubs.

Up until now The Chosen One’s speeches had seemed to them less like stretches of words and more like soul sensations that transcended time and space. But those in the grips of Obama Comedown Syndrome began to wonder if His stuff actually made sense. For example, His Hopeness tells rallies that we are the change we have been waiting for, "but if we are the change we have been waiting for, then why have we been waiting since we’ve been here all along?"

"As the syndrome progresses, they begin to ask questions about The Presence himself":

Barack Obama vowed to abide by the public finance campaign-spending rules in the general election if his opponent did. But now he’s waffling on his promise. Why does he need to check with his campaign staff members when deciding whether to keep his word?

Obama says he is practicing a new kind of politics, but why has his PAC sloshed $698,000 to the campaigns of the superdelegates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics? Is giving Robert Byrd’s campaign $10,000 the kind of change we can believe in?

If he values independent thinking, why is his the most predictable liberal vote in the Senate? A People for the American Way computer program would cast the same votes for cheaper.

And should we be worried about Obama’s mountainous self-confidence?

These doubts lead O.C.S. sufferers down the path to the question that is the Unholy of the Unholies for Obama-maniacs:

How exactly would all this unity he talks about come to pass?

114. Why is there so much glee about Hillary's sagging numbers-what did this
woman do to Democrats to make them hate her so much - I am at a loss to understand - and don't bring up that tired bullshit about the war vote - it is a Potemkin village. This is so typical of Democrats - the cutting off their noses to spite their faces. I would almost laugh at a McCain victory if only I didn't have to live here afterwards.

Oh, for the love of God. Why is something wrong with a Democrat if they don't support Clinton? We have two great candidates who are competing in a race. Roughly half like Obama, the other half Clinton. The hatred (from both sides btw) on DU does not reflect the vast majority of Democrats. They just like one candidate over the other.

66. Only a freeptard could agree with this crap!
"The Gang of 14 created bipartisan unity on judges..."

Only a total ass would call the Alito confirmation "bipartisan unity."

When the filibuster was called for, only 41 Senators were needed to stop his nomination.

42 Senators voted that he is unfit for the bench. Yet there he sits.

How can this have happened? How?

All the times I've asked how this could happen and now your saying it was because the group of 14 created "bipartisan unity" in the Senate.

Unbelievable! It defies description. No wait, it doesn't, the prophet George Orwell called it newspeak.

For what it's worth, I think it's good that Obama is finally showing some flaws. Obama the Myth has always been a tough candidate to support -- no one's THAT perfect. But Obama the Man is a flawed but good human being who is helping lead the country in a new direction it's needed to go in for many years. I can support Obama the Man more than Obama the Myth.

Edited to remove "supposed" from the topic line. No need to challenge your integrity.

Obama's first coming

Washington correspondent Geoff Elliott | February 09, 2008

IT was early 1994 when Nelson Mandela gave a speech in a slum outside Cape Town and spoke in grand terms of a new beginning and how when he was elected president every household would have a washing machine.

People took him literally. A few months later he became South Africa's first black president. That's when clerks in department stores in Cape Town had to turn people away demanding their free washer and dryer.
.......
How does a cult figure, in the eyes of some something akin to a messiah, make the transition to a political frontrunner - president even - where disappointment will soon crush what seemed to be a journey to a promised land?
Looking into the faces of a more than 16,000-strong crowd in a basketball stadium in Hartford, Connecticut this week, the Mandela magic I'd seen before was there too. Black and white, and the youth; they appeared in a state close to rapture watching Obama speak. Here and there one could see women crying and the some men wiping away tears too.
.......
In the US today there are echoes of that Rainbow Revolution. Through the media and on the streets people are getting a bit giddy over Obama. In this man they are projecting a new course - one that he says he will lead - where the US buries the culture wars, charts a new course in bipartisan politics and heralds a new dawn for America. ......
........
And therein lays the danger for Obama. The Obama shuttle has made it into orbit but at some point he's going to have to land this thing back on Earth.
.........
But the danger remains for Obama in managing the cult-like fervour. Obviously, he's no messiah and lofty expectations of his supporters is something that Obama is also acutely aware of. In stockmarket parlance, Obama's share price is soaring on expected future earnings. Clinton, 20 years in the public eye, is like the industrial conglomerate: steady share price and reliable dividends. Think of Obama as Google and Clinton as General Electric.
.............

"We can do this," he told ecstatic supporters on Tuesday night. "It will not be easy. It will require struggle and sacrifice. There will setbacks and we will make mistakes."
But then Obama, in the next sentence, in attempt to appeal to more voters out there, didn't even mention the Democratic Party but instead his "movement" saying: "I want to speak directly to all those Americans who have yet to join this movement but still hunger for change: we need you. We need you to stand with us, and work with us, and help us prove that together, ordinary people can still do extraordinary things".

.........
In his Super Tuesday speech Obama said "we are the ones we've been waiting for", attempting to make the case the time was now to get some "change" in Washington: a post-partisan world where politicians reach across the aisle for the common good. "This time can be different because this campaign for the presidency of the United States of America is different," he said. "It's different not because of me. It's different because of you."
.......
"Rather than focusing on any specific issue or cause - other than an amorphous desire for change - the message is becoming dangerously self-referential. The Obama campaign all too often is about how wonderful the Obama campaign is."

I hear that too in the voices of Obama's staff constantly, themselves referring to this "cult of Obama".

"Even if he doesn't go all the way, and I'm not being defeatist, I'm so thrilled to be a part of this and see the size of the crowds turning out," one staffer tells me.
.........
. He may well build an unstoppable momentum. And then the giddiness might evaporate and be replaced with something else. In marketing they call it post-purchase disappointment. If he gets the Democratic Party's nomination another test begins anew: how to turn the narrative which is all about striving for what is possible, to one where people are suddenly asking how are you actually going to do it?

64. David Brooks is an ass! Obama has given more financial support to Dems up for reelection. Byrd?
Is Brooks now channeling Jeanine Pirro?

November 16, 2005

NY: Pirro is Pathetic

From the New York Daily News:

Republican Senate hopeful Jeanine Pirro's campaign slammed Sen. Hillary Clinton yesterday for helping out at a birthday bash for West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd, who was briefly a Ku Klux Klan member more than 60 years ago.

"Any person who has made racially insensitive comments and participated in groups that promote ethnic prejudice - Republican or Democrat - do not deserve support from a United States senator, especially the senator from New York," Pirro campaign spokeswoman Andrea Tantaros said.

The broadside came after The Washington Post reported that Clinton co-chaired a birthday party for the 88-year-old Democrat at the home of 19th century civil rights crusader Frederick Douglass.
...
Senate Democratic Campaign Committee spokesman Phil Singer scoffed, "This is more sloppy work from a campaign lost at sea."

When your best attack is to criticize your opponnent for socializing with someone who apologized forty years ago for a mistake he made sixty years ago, you have no campaign. If Pirro actually had an issue to attack Clinton on, she might have the start of a campaign. Instead, her candidacy is a joke.

It's even more pathetic that Hillary's surrogates now believe that attacking Obama for supporting the reelection of Democrats is a worthwhile strategy!
