This is why they hate us. Really.
So Ms.O steps in a big pile of opening her mouth and not thinking. The arguments fly fast and furious on what she said and versions, but does it matter? She had a whole life up to that moment that she was not proud.

Then the defense, her husband swoops in and prepares the landing, she's on national television. It's all a mistake. Reason? You are too stupid to understand what I meant, in a kinda code, in a certain way, when I was thinking this, and saying that.

That's why we loose. The inner loathing that comes out AND is all over this board about how bad this country is and how they were never proud, from some inbecile that says "since I was seventeen". Or better yet a person who spent their school overseas. Not even here for waht would be presumably his formative years, but he was "not proud". Lets count all the nodding agrees from the posts and there is quite an underculture of self loathing that is spectacular. Never been proud. Never. Not in my whole adult life.

Do you get it yet? If this is what you think of this country, and the devine Ms. O brought it out, by mistake apparently, this is the reason they hate us. This is the reason that he will not get elected. You push that exclusive club of the "deep thinking" too far, with the generational warfare, and all that comes with it, and add a LIBRUL dose of shitting on everything and everyone,no matter their service to this country and what do you get? The final outing of the miscreants that really think we suck. Not in some ways, but all ways. This country is scum, but we have a small chance, and VIOLA! It's the Obamas. That's your choice, and if you do not take it you are stupid...and that's to fellow Democrats.

You lost the votes right out of the gate with that comment from non-Democrats.

I am skeptcal and cynical. I don't think we have done the best we can as a nation, it's still a work in progress. It always will be. But there is so much that we have accomplished. By denying that, by throwing out the big we sucked and we always have....that is why they hate us. And by them our opposition that never fails to paint us as unpatriotic nitwits, that don't have any pride.

Well thanks you "O" people. You have just opened the pandoras box of the "screw the US liberal" sterotype. It took years to get it in a box, and with the deft wordplay of a pevish Ms. O, its out there for all to see. Also to be commended the people who post so vociferiously about how she's right, and they agree.

If a gay person like myself can see the good with the bad, with all the crap I and other GLBT people have to, and listen to your prissy whining about how you agree, then really you should either shut up or move.

Now you know why.

6. We are not Un-patriotic. We are UN-NATIONALISTIC.
We UN-JINGOISTIC. We are the Patriots. A Patriot can say, this country is fucked, has been for a while, let's stand up and fix it.

Fuck Nationalism. Michelle Obama is a Free American Citizen. Free to say that this country has disappointed her. And, last I checked, she's not running for office.

Nationalistic Pukes are going to do what they do. Fuck em. Their time is over.

It's blustering puffery of an extreme nature.

This was recklessness itself, and it will hurt.

Feel free to say whatever you like about this country. Feel free to say this country sux.

Also feel free to loose elections when you do that.

Don't wonder why 99.999% of the rest of the population that doesn't post here won't vote for you.

25. Boy, you collapse at the drop of a hat.
This is not the end of the world. This is a minor gaffe which the right wing will do their best to turn into hysteria. They did this to Gore, to Kerry, to Dean, they are doing it to Michelle Obama, they will do it to Barack Obama, they did it to Hillary many times, and they would do it to her again if she was the nominee. It's the way they do politics. 24 hour media scrutiny makes mistakes inevitable. Further attacks are also inevitable.

27. Hate...
Oh, please. If Americans are so dense that they will vote for the wrong person just because of one remark, they are hopeless. Are we supposed to never express any doubts whatsoever about this country, lest we be branded "self-loathing?" I thought what she said was brave, honest and expressive of what most Americans of her age are feeling. This country has been on a tobbagan to hell ever since Reagan was elected; why should she or any American of her generation have felt proud of this country? For what? For betraying everything it stands for?

Of course, you aren't arguing that she is wrong; only that she shouldn't be so honest. THAT is exactly the kind of thinking that has led to the hopeless cynicism toward politics among young people in this country. Watch every word, consider the political implications of every decision, never show who you really are, never say what you really think.

What you are recommending is horseshit. It is the kind of repression that leads to Republicans who vote against gay rights while cruising restrooms. What people want from their leaders is integrity. Sure, we have the problem of the right-wing noise machine, who will twist everything we say to use against us. But the answer to that is to confront it head-on and expose it for what it is, not allow it to dictate to us what we can say.

And in conclusion, you have completely misrepresented what she said; the very tactic that noise-machine is so fond of. Are you really one of "us?"

30. Neshanic, great post. You write very well and captured a dangerous scenario playing out...
There are many things to be proud of in this country, ourselves just to mention one. We are not beasts, murderers or ignorants - we are humans trying to help each other. And our government, as unwieldy as it may be, is an effort towards this. We must keep working towards our goal and acknowledge our successes along the way.

36. I think most people here as well as most
strong Democrats get exactly what her point was.

The problem is that not everyone else will. Well maybe some. But not everybody. So to assume that everyone needs to "get it" is assuming a lot.

The Republicans love to paint all Liberals and Progressives as America hating, unpatriotic, etc. Now you combine the MO gaffe with the "BO is a muslim," "BO refuses to salute the flag," etc. and that could spell problems for the campaign. This is what people need to understand, rather than just dismiss it with the "get a clue" comments. Because it isn't that *we* don't get it, it's that some other people may not.
