Some folks in the GOP want to bring McCain down. I doubt very seriously that it is Huckabee or his Posse. I suspect it is Conservatives who do not trust him.

Apparently the Times has had the story for a month and has sat on it. I suspect there were issues of journalistic integrity and fact check/corroboration that needs to happen.

My bet it was folks in the Romney camp...remember how nasty this thing got before the Florida Primary?

So here is how this may play out.. the evangelical community will use this to officially sour on him. The Limbaugh wing will use it not for its juiciness but rather to abuse him for hypocrisy on Lobbying. This is going to hurt him big time in Texas. It wouldn't surprise me to see Huckabee win and then Romney jump back in, Reclaim his delegates and win the rest of the primaries ending in a brokered convention.

Personally I sort of feel sorry for McCain. He seems pretty wrongheaded on about everything but somehow is an honorable guy. We shall see just how honorable he actually has been and how much honor he has left on March 3.

MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY
Thu Dec 20 2007 10:49:27 ET

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!

McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The paper’s Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain’s aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.

The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation. The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

9. Almost any way it plays out, it is one huge leap closer to a Dem win in the fall
No matter what happens, large voting blocks of 'Pugs and conservatives are going to be pissed off and stay home on election day. McCain has not only screwed a lobbyist, but also the pooch and the Republican party as well.
