McCain Sucks the Air Out of Headlines - Keeps Hillary's Message on Page 19
It's rather obvious what is happening here.

McCain has his nomination locked up. His campaign creates media buzz about an affair from 8 years ago.

Gets 48 to 72 hours of headlines and media coverage. No one else can break through with their message.

Hillary, on the ropes, can't get the media's attention to fight Obama.

McCain camp did this to prevent Hillary from any comeback because that is who they are afraid of in November.

Well thought out and makes perfect sense.

AS the French would say: Ca saute aux yeux!

18. The source is his campaign per the article..
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/us/politics/21mccain.html?_r=3&hp=&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

No GOP candidate already in trouble with his conservative base would deliberately leak info about a suspected affair just to spite a second place Democrat with slim chances of becoming the Democratic nominee.

I have too.

But I don't think its analysis paralysis on my part by any means.

McCain camp obviously did it to circumvent bad news, but I think the corallary effect does take the other candidates message to the second tier and drowns them out.

Why would he? This is the kind of thing that haunts your campaign the whole way. He doesn't need this kind of shadow. If I were to bet on it, I'd lay my money with the DNC. They probably knew of a couple of former aides that were pissed about something and used it.

35. If McCain really cared about some 10 year old sex scandal
why would they bring it up now to damage or take attention away from Clinton ? Wouldn't she be the perfect candidate for his old sex "scandal" to come up against in the general because her campaign and her would not be able to say a word about it because of Bill's history. The idea behind this thread just doesn't make sense, especially since Obama is ahead of Hillary against McCain in the GE polls.

37. Yes, this is JUST what McCain wants - especially all the talk on ethics
revisiting when he was one of the Keating 5. Not to mention, there are some evangelicals already not too happy with him who likely won't like either the intimation that he had an affair or the ethics questions.

This really would be cutting your nose off to spite your face.

It will take a bunch of attention away from Michelle Obama
It will take a ton of attention away from the false outrage directed at Michelle Obama. Probably won't hurt McCain anyway because it is something that was alledged over 8 years ago, who really cares, they will just say it isn't anything worse than Bill did.

McCain's team "leaks" an old story about their own candidate's *potential* affair with a lobbyist.

And by doing so, they prevent ANY possible postitive coverage for Hillary during her upcoming critical primary battles.

BRILLIANT!

There's no WAY this can backfire!
