I was at Reunion Arena today to see Barak Obama.
The arena was completely full... lots of young people, students, and lots of parents who brought their kids... frankly, lots of every kind of people. The most mixed crowd I have ever seen...old, young, all colors, races, even union members wearing their union shirts, etc...just everything. People were happy and literally dancing to the piped in music.
Obama was great, I really enjoyed his speech. I've heard him make the same speech that he's been making this week, that I've seen on the net...it was fun to see him in person. No matter what the outcome will be, I couldn't help but think that I was looking at a piece of history. He comes across to me as genuine...no "ick" factor for me, as I wanted to check because I had never actually seen him in person. I did get a good vibe and I do think he had great confidence and charisma. I didn't feel like he was trying to convince me to vote for him. I just felt like he was speaking to the issues that we all already know and have been wanting someone to address and acknowledge for so long. The arena was really excited, alive, on their feet, and very loud....other times quiet and intently listening.
He had a terrible head cold....and you could hear how stopped-up he was. He even at one point in the middle of his speech, actually had to stop to blow his nose. It was kinda funny...and he played it off well "I'm gonna be alright"...and just kept going. Even as bad as you could see he felt, he also still looked and sounded on top of his game, greeting the people afterward in the front section as if he was feeling just fine. I think he must be pretty sick, but he didn’t show it.
If anyone is familiar with Dallas/Fort Worth politics, former Mayor Ron Kirk spoke for a few minutes first. It was good to see him, he was 2 mayors ago. (I live on the Forth Worth side of things now, and that's a whole different animal to DFW locals.)
Some young 19 year old hispanic man/boy spoke for about 1 minute. Don't know who he was, and I don't remember his name. He spoke well. I'll make a few calls and try to get his name. He said his 20th birthday is March 4th, and was asking everyone to give him a good birthday present by electing Barak Obama.
Also, former Dallas Cowboy Emmit Smith spoke for about 5 minutes. That was a big surprise, or at least I had no idea he would be there. The crowd went completely nuts. It was great fun. I'm not really a sports fan, but being that I grew up in Irving (where the Cowboys have played at Texas Stadium for over 30 years, but not much longer) being a Cowboys fan is sort of genetic. I have a friend living in Tokyo, Japan that I went to college with that was a huge Emmit/Cowboys fan. I can't wait to tell him about it.
Emmit was not bad...he was not terribly eloquent, but to say he was passionate was an understatement. I have never seen anyone so “fired up”, for lack of a better word. He was so good, in fact, that when Obama came out he said something like “boy, it’s a good thing Emmit’s not running for president.” And that was probably only a half joke, because he was great and had the crowd going absolutely bonkers. He had complete command of the arena. quote -- "as a young man, people told me I was too small, not fast enough, to do the things that I wanted to do in terms of football. Well, you know what? I did not allow them to keep me down, and Barak Obama is not going to allow them to keep him down! (crowd goes nuts) And I tell you what, when you have ?bad audio?, vision, goals, determination, there is nothing that can stop you if you believe in yourself. And this man is what I believe in." (crowd goes more nuts)
I think I saw Deion Sanders...the people sitting around me thought it was him too...we were pretty sure it was him, but from our distance it was kinda hard to tell...so don't quote me on that. He didn't speak, just part of the vip section.
I had a pretty good view of the stage...wasn't the greatest, but could have been much worse. I was stage-right on the second level. I wish I had been a little closer, but I was still close enough that I didn't feel deprived. My camera phone sux, though. Don't know why the picture is so distorted. I never had problems with it before. The audio is mostly clean. The video makes it look like I was a million miles away from the stage; but really, I mostly had a good view.
So that's my ramblings.
Hillary is supposed to be here too, next week I hear, and I plan to go see her has well.
Early voting has already started here, but I will probably wait until March 4th to vote.
I'm still on the fence. I really do like both Hillary and Barak. I think I'm starting to lean toward Barak more now. Hillary's war vote and my not liking the idea of the same two families in power for the last 20 years are the two things that keep bringing me back to Barak. But ask me tomorrow, and I'll probably tell you why I'll be voting for Hillary. I seem to be back and forth every day. Ask me on March 4th.
Thanks for reading!
