Ever since 2000, I have been ASHAMED of my country!
The US has done some things that I am very proud of, and it has done some things that I am ashamed of. I am proud of the principles on which our country was based. I am ashamed of the way we treated Native Americans.

I am VERY ASHAMED of the directions our country has taken under the Bush Administration. I am very ASHAMED that our country decided that torture is ok. I am ashamed that we have decided that the government can spy on average citizens with no reason. I am ashamed of our foreign policies. I am ashamed of the apathy of the average American that allowed this to happen.

I am proud, for the first time since 2000 and perhaps earlier, that the American People are beginning to stand up and say WE NEED CHANGE!

You can parse Michelle Obama's words all you want, but I have to agree with her. Our country was on the wrong course, and bringing shame to all who claimed to be an American. Now, Americans have finally found our voices, and for the first time in years Americans may actually make the changes so that we can all be proud of America again.

5. Since 2000, Proud of . . . ?
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 10:41 PM by patrice
Proud of many of the things that most Americans refer when they say they are proud of America - yes.

But what about:

Proud of interfering with the domestic politics of other nations and CHOOSING to murder thousands and thousands of Iraqi Children? - No!

Proud of being the biggest Arms Dealer of all time?

Proud of religious bigot-pig-headed Environmental Science confusionist contrarianism?

Proud of some of the lowest Voter Turnouts on Earth?

Proud of good old Amerikan Racism?

Proud of the Education of Amerikan Children that does not compare well with that of many many other nations'?

Proud of our status as the biggest Debtor Nation on Earth?

8. OF COURSE-I've been ashamed since 2000.
And I'm a simple, legal immigrant, poor little white woman on the south side of my town.
I have never been a black woman in this country.
I am very grateful for that.

10. There's not going to be change, at least for the good. BO just
doesn't have it..If he doesn't win then yes there will eventually be change but it won't be over night. You don't get change with chants and playing people for fools. Snake oil salesmen will say anything. And that's all BO is is talk.

14. As Barack has said himself, change has to come from us,
the people. If we just elect him and expect him to do it all, then you're - there will not be change. However, he can inspire us to work for change. He can lead us, but we have to be the agents of change.

No snake oil there. Just solid reality.

12. When I first heard Michelle Obama's words, I agreed with her.
...I thought she was tlaking about how unfairly we treat other nations. But when she explained herself, it didn't come out that way. ..I wish Hillary or Obama would start talking about our past sins. ...Maybe then people would understand why we hate BushCo so much.
