Teetering on the Border (empty seats for Hillary)
<snip>

"Hillary Clinton, drubbed by Barack Obama in 10 straight votes, flew down to this dusty border town on Wednesday to make her last stand for the Democratic presidential nomination. But where was the cavalry?

On Tuesday night, Obama had packed in a capacity crowd of more than 18,000 at the Toyota Center in Houston, home of the National Basketball Association's Houston Rockets. But when Clinton emerged to speak at the 6,800-seat Dodge Arena here -- home of a minor-league hockey team -- rows and rows of empty blue seats awaited.

Organizers had pulled out all the stops: a two-dozen-piece mariachi band, Mexican dancers, a cowboy-cowgirl dancing act, a goth rock band, even a guy throwing out T-shirts and shouting "Who's excited?" But it was no use. In the top row of the arena, Jose G. Bustos, wearing a Clinton T-shirt and sticker, had Section 120 to himself. He surveyed the crowd. "We were expecting a little more," he said.

After her defeat in the Wisconsin primary Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton on Wednesday did what Americans in trouble have done for centuries: She ran for the border. As has been her habit this primary season, she came up just short."

1. Ouch. That hurts. I really wish she'd look around the nation, this country
she claims to love so much, and see the handwriting on the wall. Dignity is hard to replace.

I am an O'bot, but Milbank does not impress me as an objective commentator.

my husband, who is not really interested in anything political, heard Hillary giving a speech and said he felt sorry for her. He is very intuitive about people, and I have learned to pay attention to his gut reactions. Looks like he nailed it.

8. What a fucking HIT piece.
Yeah, this guy's an "impartial commentator"--not.

...she must have felt tempted to slip across the bridge and into Mexico, a fugitive from a coronation gone awry.

And then, to "contrast" an appearance on a fucking BORDER town with an appearance in densely-populated Houston--how DO those two events have any convergence? Hidalgo is NOT Houston, in any way, shape, or form.

Why don't they just stand their, out in the open, with the long knives? This furtive back-stabbing is getting old.

35. Try looking at the population of the Valley
And thanks for referring to my home town as a "fucking BORDER town," btw. Love you too.

There are at least 1 million in the RGV alone (not counting Northern Mexico) & 250K in the McAllen/Hidalgo area alone. 200-300 is a piss-poor turnout in an area infamous for machine politics.

For wuick & easy reference, I went to the Bill Clinton rally at the airport in 1992 the night before the election. It was announced less than 24 hours in advance. So many people were going that McAllen had to send busses to get people from the mall parking lot to the airport. THOUSANDS showed up on last minute notice. It took me almost 2 hours to get home, most of that spent in the parking lot waiting to get out.

200-300 in a 5000+ capacity arena that fills up for hockey games isn't anything to brag about.

for her to overcome the districts that obama should win.texas has one screwed up way in determining how many delegates from each district. she could actually win the popular vote and fall way short on the delegate count. she really has to win big to have a chance for a majority of delegates

21. Dana Milbank -- smirking 24/7 these days.
He can hardly conceal his glee when Keith has him on. He knows that the fix is in, that he will profit, and that "he da MAN".

At one time, I would have found it infuriating. But now, it's just another source of amusement. Since the early 1990s, the Press has grown drunk on its own ability to make the news. But the smirking Solons don't realize that in spite of temporarily fitting in with the cool kids, in the long run, they are destroying themselves by pissing away their collective reputation.

Think this is about Obama v Clinton v McCain? I only wish!

The professional press is now a great multi-celled whore. The bloggers are a swamp of "me-too" voices. It is increasingly difficult to find the few honest voices in the cacophony. There are six or eight puppet-masters, and there is no visible way out of the bind.

I'd feel sorry for Hillary if she wasn't swiftboating Obama and paving the way for the rethug attack machine in the GE.

Stop now and save whatever shreds of dignity you got left would be my advise to a massively failed candidacy.

34. I have no doubt Obama is drawing more people in Texas than Clinton.
However, that doesn't take away from the fact that Dana Milbank is a stooge.

"The Clinton campaign had spoken about a major rally here in south Texas, a display of the voting power of Latinos who would revive her campaign. There were indeed thousands of people here, many of them Latinos, but not enough to fill sections 107, 108, 113, 118, 119, 120 and 121. A big Texas flag concealed the empty seats of one whole section, and vast patches of the arena floor went unoccupied."

I didn't see the point for that. He'd already established that not as many people turned out as were expected.

area alone, then look at the Lower Rio Grande Valley as a whole. She should have filled that arena. Easily. Lots of people around to go to the rally.
